They are migrants coming to America to support their famalies that they left behind....and similar to those of 1800's migrants on a boate that came to the shores of New York City....back then it used to be called; "Staten Island"!

Cat Steven's music is badass. It's always awesome and creative vocal harmony's accompanied by great guitar picking on top of full sounding chords. This song specially has some great lyrics to paint over the top of it. I find it quite funny and ironic that you can write a song in these times yet listen to a song from the '70s that can sum up your feelings in such a beautiful demeanor.

The verses discuss the 'price' of the trip - what gets you into heaven or keeps you out. You can believe the (virgin) Mary and the parson (Rev. CL Dodgson ? from Alice, remember he told the story while boating) are committing the original sin if you want to, but I think Stevens is suggesting they are innocent, as is the flower in the second verse. It's just another name for God. Steven's believes that all religions serve this God: Christianity, Buddhism and Islam.
The simple lyrics disguise the theme. In Greek mythology, the souls of the departed were carried across the river Styx to an afterlife: heaven or hell. The passage across the river was by boat, and the pilots were Tillermen (Tea for the Tillerman). The catch is, which way were the boats going? Were they long, longer or longest boats? Stevens uses this riddle to leave uncertainty about which boat to catch.
It's one of my favourite Cat songs, but it's definitely one of his most challenging songs too. I always read it as the long boats being the Viking ships invading our lands, but really, the longer boats aren't the main part of the song. The verses are more important than than the chorus here.
Being that he isn't originally from the US he may be singing about somewheres else. The Vikings did invade Ireland and elsewhere at least once. Soooo....who knows.

What a ridiculous comment. First off, you can't tell a terrorist by simply what he looks like, and if you're implying that because Cat has long hair and a beard he is a terrorist, then you are very ignorant indeed. Why do you people bash on Cat Stevens videos? I think we're all here to enjoy this man's music, not criticize his modern religious or political positions. If you really want to bash on what he is now, go do it on a Yusuf Islam video, not a Cat Stevens video. They're separate.

I know this sounds sinful and sac-religous, but i feel like I see and hear Jesus when I listen to his songs. So prophetic and somehow comforting at the same time. I adore his music and presence.

Cat Steven's music is badass. It's always awesome and creative vocal harmony's accompanied by great guitar picking on top of full sounding chords. This song specially has some great lyrics to paint over the top of it. I find it quite funny and ironic that you can write a song in these times yet listen to a song from the '70s that can sum up your feelings in such a beautiful demeanor.

The verses discuss the 'price' of the trip - what gets you into heaven or keeps you out. You can believe the (virgin) Mary and the parson (Rev. CL Dodgson ? from Alice, remember he told the story while boating) are committing the original sin if you want to, but I think Stevens is suggesting they are innocent, as is the flower in the second verse. It's just another name for God. Steven's believes that all religions serve this God: Christianity, Buddhism and Islam.

The simple lyrics disguise the theme. In Greek mythology, the souls of the departed were carried across the river Styx to an afterlife: heaven or hell. The passage across the river was by boat, and the pilots were Tillermen (Tea for the Tillerman). The catch is, which way were the boats going? Were they long, longer or longest boats? Stevens uses this riddle to leave uncertainty about which boat to catch.

It's one of my favourite Cat songs, but it's definitely one of his most challenging songs too. I always read it as the long boats being the Viking ships invading our lands, but really, the longer boats aren't the main part of the song. The verses are more important than than the chorus here.

The Vikings was probably the first to invade (more likely raid), then come the other invasions, English, Spanish, French etc.
