"What the devil is that thing?" Okay, I know what a serpent is, but it's a quote from... someone, from back when the serpent was very first invented. I looked up serpent specifically so I could use that line.
it is not a relative of the tuba .........tuba hadnt been invented..........many ancient works are scored for serpent, early Wagner, Meyerbeer, Mehul, Mendelssohn, Berlioz, the closest relative it would have was the ophicleide, that is "key serpent" Serpent is the bass of the cornetts.
I remember my stupid music teacher in school telling us about the Serpent, and saying it got it's name because it made a hissing sound - seriously! LOL
makers are chistefer monk workshops (now run by jeremy west) thes are the best, moeck (can't spell), kaiser serpents (the lest exspenseve at $550 and look decent)
these would look so good in a black metal band..

@papoocanada Oh, I don't know. I think one can make a case for it being a distant relative of the tuba; the word used was distant.

The serpent is a distant relative to the Tuba. And a close cousin to the Cornett. It is in the Brass section of instruments.

Glad you enjoyed it! I hadn't even known these things existed before I met this woman at the festival. I wonder who makes them still?
