I have a PC and A Net Book/Laptop.. I’ve used XP Pro for over four years without any major problems and run’s smooth and fast. XP is the most Hardware and Software Compatible and Stable OS out there.. I’ve tested Windows Vista and that = Shit, trust me.. I’ve used Windows 7 and all I can say is it looks good and runs o.k but need to be faster like the XP.. When I click on a file I expect it to open quick and not take it’s dame time to execute the simplest things!!

To be honest these boot tests are pretty daft. They usually just count the time it take till the home-screen appears. What they should do is count how long it takes until the system is usable, you can open up a browser, word document etc. without it locking up.

My old XP machine would boot quickly, but take a hell of a long time to become usable.

My XP on my Acer Aspire One takes anywhere from 4-9 minutes to start! Once I got a ps3 and only used it when my laptop's charger fcked up,it took around 15 seconds for it to run,I was pleased with that.

in the description you were said that you were installed them on different partitions.but you forgot how much size each partition for each OS and maybe 7 is slower than xp at that time because i know you were using 7 as primary OS and you put already your important files in the Win7 and it will makes it boot slower than xp...

I'm sorry to say this, but your experiment here's filled with uncertainties. A few are:

1. You didn't run proper benchmark tests, thereby meaning that your boot speed was merely based on your perception.

2. To test the speed you just recorded it with a video camera, causing other uncertainties.

3. Since I know that Windows 7 boots faster, I suspect you not having a clean install for both OSs. If you use Windows 7 as your main OS, then it'll be slower than XP and vice versa.

Man I bough an offboard sound card from Creative, it didn't install on Windows 7 or Vista, only on XP, XP is more simple but more reliable, safety, man, Windows 98 > Windows XP a large progress, Windows XP > Windows 7 a little progress, Windows 7 have DirectX 11 but isn't compatibly with a large variety of hardwares

@CalMacMc You can run programs and install drivers in Compatibility Mode on Windows 7. That way you can run hardware/software designed for XP. I had to do it with my printer, and I'm sure you could do it with your sound card. Also, the song name is 009 Sound System - Dreamscape.

@chisafa053 I can agree with statments 1,2 and 4 but for the sake of arguing disagree with 3 slightly due to the fact that XP Mode requires newer cpu's with Virtulization Technology and also point out that you can use VMware which does not req. VT Technology and is Linux compatable aswell. I'd also like to point out Linux is faster and more often updated and user friendly and probably the best choice for an OS unless your a serious gamer.

I just reverted to win XP on the three computers in my house. All three start up faster, shut down faster, and are more responsive. Even a simple search of Win7 vs XP benchmarks prove the rest of your remarks ridiculous.

The point is this: the OS's job is to manage the hardware efficiently. If the latest version is slower IN ANY WAY than the previous version, then the previous version is better. If you want pretty pics, go find a better theme... leave the OS for real work.

And about your hardware comment, if you've got Windows Vista 32bit, it'll be "stable" (notice the quotation marks). However, if you run a 64bit version with 8GB ram, unless you've bought it with the corresponding drivers, you're screwed, cause often just a simple right click on the desktop will *bluescreen of death*.........*restart*......­.get my point?

not a good test. also the main thing that effects startup time is how much stuff you have on the HDD, a clean HDD will start up in few seconds while a packed one will tamy few minutes. RAID 0 is the best way to get fast booting time. it always cuts the loading times by 50%

This benchmark seems biased to me. The fact that the boots are being run consecutively may give unfair advantage to one process over the other due to CPU cache. Another problem may be hard drive access. On typical rotational winchester drives, data located at the inner portion of the platter(s) is likely to be accessed faster than data located at the outer portion. Fragmentation wouldn't help either. There are other factors that may cause this benchmark to be inaccurate.

I would not trust the results of a dual boot test since there are other limitations that cannot be adjusted for (such as fsb being shared), the most accurate way would be to run 5 or 6 boots of each OS independetly and then calculate an average time for each.

That does not matter, that's a GPU performance issue. Anything Graphical is dependent on the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) The CPU takes care of all the instructions besides graphical instructions.

It will be different for different situations. Windows 7 takes advantage of new hardware features to run and startup faster that Windows XP can't use. This was made before the full version of WIndows 7 was released.

I have to say XP is the best of all so far. I wouldn't upgrade my computer anymore. I rather stay with XP and the computer as it is. Why do Microsoft keep upgrading to vista, 7, then vienna, then other? Simply because they want to make money by taking advantage of your computer. When you keep upgrading your OS, you let microsoft take advantage of you, plus they make money from motherboards, memories, etc.. from IBM.
