  • Seeing him on the 19th of feb! HAPPY BIRTHDAY

  • 1:22 sickest part ever. I'm currently doing this show and i want to incorparate that because it sounded so good.

  • Saw him on stage - amazing! This is my favourite song.

  • Man the childrens voices were scary...

  • as mrs sands is making our class sing this infront of yr 8 and loads of teachers!! <3

  • I do love him in this role.

  • I was in the front row for a performance of this show and Meady was brilliant in the role.

  • Oh gosh I get goosbumps when I hear the last lines: for we have been promised a land of our own. I have no idea why, but I just really love Lee Mead in this okay.

  • a little flat on the " i know we SHALL" but other wise enjoyable haha

  • I saw him in Joseph in London three years ago. Best experience of my life. :D

  • if i get 20 likes i will ask my crush out <3

  • @zoegreenleaf What the heck just ask him out sheesh you dont need likes to ask your crush out

  • hey guys! can you critique mrmonkeywaller's version of this AWESOME song?! it would really help. thanks!

  • I grew up with the Donny Osmand version and saw clips of Jason Donovan as Joseph but watching this really makes me believe Lee IS Joseph, angry, upset, desperate, alone, locked up. It's so believable :)

  • donny is the real jospeh to me and i stick by my opinion, no one can change it and im not trying to change your opinions ither. its just i like donny better

  • Love Donny as Joseph. His performance is understated.... natural ... a masterpiece.

  • Nice Voice!!!!

  • Donny! Is the best!!

  • I saw this in the west end ages ago he was fantastic, it all was! :D

  • 64 people fail

  • he is way better then the other one

  • I´ve always prefered Jason Donovan!

  • Good singing!

  • I LOVE LEE. He is perfection.

  • Lee Best Joseph Ever. He is playing it wth passion. Telling his captors he will never be defeated. His God is with him. He is reflective and still just prior, very introspective and then wakes to this realiztion. You have to see it in context. Not necessarily to make him sad. Its passion. I love it. And his voice.

  • i went to see lee mead do this show at londons west end it was A.M.A.Z.I.N.G

    love you lee

  • I've had an attempt at singing this song on my channel, but I know I can't compare to Lee Mead. He's amazing. Cheers all. :-)

  • Lee Mead's version of this song is my favourite version. Lee is exceptionally talented. :-)

  • 1:15 = love

  • I know he's really really amazing and this is in no way a dig at the guy, but i get the feeling he's just waiting for that peak note at the end for the whole song.

  • Lee Mead's version of Close Every Door is by far the best! Love him! Go Lee!!!! xx

  • Smokin hot body....oh and the song was good too! =)

  • Philip Schofields version is happy, he smiles a lot as he sings it. Donny I agree is sad and vulnerable, and Lee Mead is angry. I can't think of Philip Schofield in the same light as before, knowing him as daytime television, but having seen him singing Joseph it makes me have goosebumps. What a stud muffin he was!!!

  • I think it wouldve been nice if he showed a transition from sad/angry Joseph to the prospect of a future for himself and the children of Israel. Bloody good job regardless though.

  • he would be an AMAZING aladdin :D

  • @melovessinging123 haha you're right!

  • I just performed this for a high school production my school put on. I'm looking for people to go take a look at it. It's on my channel. thank you if you take the time to go watch it! I'm hoping those that have any appreciation for musical theatre styles of music will like it. Thanks!

    Konnor j Davis

  • he's ok i guess, but keith jack is way way way better singing this song, i saw keith today and he beats him by a mile, donny is the best one though

  • @aliciah10 No. He is not better far from it. His phrasing is terrible. He should not even have done the part 3 years on he should have done something new.

  • Hot hotter Lee Mead

  • amazing xx

  • He would make an amazing phantom of the opera! :D I love the song :3

  • Hey you cut off the first part!!!!!! I know because I was in a performance of this about a week ago!!!!!

  • lee sucks. :(

  • @rbkats107 Its true he really does...

  • It's funny comparing these two men. It's the same story with who sings "Memory" from Cats better, Elaine Paige or Betty Buckley.

    It's always amusing to debate.

  • lee has a nice voice.....

  • Both Donny and Lee do all so well. But we shouldn't forget the Dutch Joseph, Freek. he does an amazing job as well.

  • This was recorded in preview time. His version just got better and better in the 18 months he was Joseph. ALW called him possibly the best Joseph ever.

  • whenever i hear lee sing i get goosebumps! i want to marry him. he is my idol

  • I can do all through Christ who strengthens me

  • You know what? I saw Donny's as well and I think he looks the part much more. Also, Donny seems more sad and bitter. Lee just looks angry. But Lee has a lot more passion in his voice... they're both so incredible!

  • too much acting, too much posing and too stage school - its almost clinical - like singing by numbers.. Donny was cheesy and the stage production of that version was hideous -- but his version of close every door had so much passion..

  • Lee's for me. His is a virile Joseph. His interpretation was totally different and powerful. With light and dark shadings. No comic take. I love his voice and the power.

  • He wanted to hit some of those notes more than he actually did. Sorry guys, Joseph wins. Lee Mead's voice can't handle it.

  • i prefer donny osmond =]

  • I love both, don't get me wrong, but I will have to agree with many others here (particularly forlikeforever). They can't be compared as "one is better than the other". They are interpreting the song/show/character differently, and perform based on their interpretation. And seriously, its live, everyone makes mistakes, and no one is ALWAYS on pitch.... movie was recorded anyways.... but hey...we all love Joseph :)

  • Donny is better.

  • We can't compare one to another. That's not the point. I mean, they are so different. Their version of Joseph are different. Donny's Joseph in this song is more like vulnerable/sad/tired, while Lee's it's like a revolted/angry/ Joseph.

Personally, I prefer Donny's Joseph, but they both sing well.

Abou the "kills of notes", it's a live show, everyone can make a mistake :)

  • @forlikeforever personally, I prefer Donny's interpretation. I don't see Joseph as being revolted, more like vulnerable which is why his spirits are uplifted by the children (although I read them as symbols and not actually present).

  • @forlikeforever I prefer Donny Osmond too.

  • This guy just doesn't compare. You can see his neck bulging, and while he totally kills the note at 1:26, he also kills the note at 1:14 . . . except, not in a good way. And all through the beginning, those low parts had nothing. While he's desperately throwing emotion out of his body to make up for his vocal lack, its just not working for me here. Not to mention the song is pitched down for him in comparison to Donny's. Donny wins, plain and simple.

  • he's flat. can't you hear that???? he sings flat consistently.

  • He's good. but the problem is that this was a little overacted and hence oversanged. It lacks the vulnerability that this song requires. That is why like Donny's version a lot better.

  • Lee sings it a lot better than Donny simply because Lee has more Passion & Aggresion into the song than Donny does.

  • Actually its Love him.

  • I just live Lee in this video. Less than a month for me until Wimbledon and Wicked.

  • im sorry but i think that donny osmond, kevin max, and stan carrizosa do a much better job on this. lee was pernouncing every single word and making his acsent was still in there. sorry

  • he is such a good joseph

  • He is amazing in wicked! You should so go see.

  • i went to london a few years ago to see joseph, and found out that it was lee's week off when we got there! but ive just seen him in wicked so ive finally got to see him :) i think he'sbrilliant

  • Lee has nice veins and muscles in his neck.

  • @ccolimon hot xD

  • I listened to this one and to donny´s: And i love the version from Lee he has such a strong voice

  • What can u say..an amazing appareance..i could have seen it over and over again if he hadn't stepped down..listened to the "befores" and it's way to "little" sorry my big teenage idol Donny and jason

  • he tends to talk instead of singing sometimes but he has some serious passion!

  • they are both good i prefer donny

  • i want to be this guy teach me man omg

  • I think the performances are almost identical. Both are brilliant but facial expressions and passion levels almost identical to me

  • For me, the show is ALL about this song. Lee sang it completely as I would have directed it. Such a perfect combination of vulnerability and strength. It's such a beautiful and rich and complex song because he just goes on a journey from beaten to hopeful. When you're down to nothing, God is up to something.

  • He can't hit the lower notes, and his vowels screw with his pitches and are frankly quite distracting because they're so random.

And he couldn't hit the climactic high note.

But I must admit, I liked his ending.

  • @aihoshiduo honestly i know nothing abt music so i cant even debate lol but i aggree im kinda sad he didnt hit the ending that donny osmond did but i gotta hand it to him this was waayyy more intense

  • i cant stop watching this. amazing.

  • No, I have to go with Donny, this guy was good, but Donny brings a level of realism into the part.

  • OH MY GOD!!!! shiverings over my whole body!!! sooo beautiful!!!

  • I went to see Lee in this three times and each time he surpassed himself. He is a true star, and when he hits the high notes it makes your hairs stick up. I cried everytime I heard this song so I can say Lee is the best and this is from experience x

  • OK THANKS HUN..I WISH THO..HE'S SO MUCH BETTER THEN DONNY..BUT HES GOOD 2..

  • I saw Lee three times in the west end and can confirm he is very talented. He hits the high notes every time and makes the hairs on your arms stand on end. I cried everytime I saw close every door. Shame they didn't make a dvd I would have brought it. x

  • This clip is from a preview performance after the interlude with children's chorus. You miss the beginning which he portrayed a quiet, heartbroken and devastated man. Through the song he becomes empowered by his faith to passionate and defiant of his captors in the end. I prefer this development of character. For a current interpretation see "Lee Mead-close every door in concert" It is a beautiful, but different take. Much more smooth and I love the acappella portion.

  • I really like his voice (it's rich), he's pretty good looking too, which doesn't hurt :o) Donny on the other hand when singing this song gives me the chills and draws me into the song. So my opinion for "me" is Donny has it hands down.

  • this is dumb

  • is this 1 on dvd with lee mead.? anyone.?

  • @tattooedbutch0717 No DVD of the stage performance with Lee Mead was made.

  • soooo sexy

  • Omg... Why must he be sooo sexy?!

I can't get him out of my head

P.S It's not really Matt Blissett

  • You have to hear the Sam Harris version. I just watched it. He sings it with just piano. OMG!

  • You are SO SO SO SEXY !!! ..... Jeff Darga

  • Both Lee and Donny are very good, but I feel Donny has a much more smooth-sounding voice, and is the most talented Joseph I've heard.

  • hes nto that good hes quite bad :/

  • He sings with similar pronunciation to the way Orlando Bloom talks

I was so glad that he won that Talent Tv Show

  • @MystedMind I was just thinking that he kind of looks like Orlando Bloom, lol.... Except Orlando is A LOT more attractive than this guy..

  • Watched the Tv show, and after Lee won I got tickets for the theatre performance and OMG he was amazing, I had chills the whole way though!! Lee Mead <3

  • Donny Osmond is too american for this tragic moment

  • @braducalin hahahahah, surprisingly true:')

  • Lee was made for this role.

  • ooo chills. Wish i could have actually seen the show both on tv and the production

  • he is SOOOO GOOODDDDD... wow! donny osmond totally sucks compared to this guy, he's singing with such passion and attitude and hes real! hes such a good actor.. he's just awesome all over :)

  • is this a parody? :D it is so funny

  • @sn3hul4k How is it funny? :S

  • Don't forget that this guy is live & Donny is in a movie and did it in a studio that can be edited and have as many retakes as necessary. As for the performance aspect I think this is better than Donny. This guy is amazing, as is Donny Osmond.

  • Donny's version is better, but the last few seconds of Lee's version definitely stood out more.

  • Is it just me, or is he off key in several places? This didn't seem that good, although he did have passion, just not great at the singing part.

  • nah nah nah donny rocks this part better, but this guy is cute though

  • ew he's sweating, i like donny better it's not overly done he sang it the way he was told to and if he wanted to he could blow lee out of park with one note

  • The Random Falsetto Notes Were...Annoying And Not Good.

  • @wiz337 There are no falsetto notes in this.?????????

  • @MusicalTheatre1011 Yes There Is Check At 1:05 & 1:15. Or Was It Just The Video... I Doubt It.

  • I love this part so much

  • He was good, very good singing but Donny had more love for the scene in his voice.

  • I decided to watch Donny's version because of the comments and yes Donny can certainly sing, but there is no comparison to Lee. I agree with the comment that Lee has soooo much more passion and I agree I think his voice is stronger; it has so much depth to it and he's a great actor. I wish you could come to NZ Lee. (in case you read this.♥

  • He's gorgeous.......and dreeeeeaaammmmy

  • I love both of them and i have to agree that Donny Osmond's is more smooth but I think lee's shows more passion and anger(and i'm sorry but if you got tossed in jail for somehing you didn't do wouldn't you be pissed???) which seems more fitting

  • Are you kidding me? Donny is the very best! Lee strains and barely makes the notes, though his tone is good and is dramatically interesting. Donny is the consummate Joseph. No overacting ~ there is so much truth to his characterization...and sings the hell out of it! Donny rocks and Le,e while compelling, needs to learn tnot to strain.

  • @mcgrawactor1 Agreed 100%. Donny Osmond is such a polished singer with such an incredible innate sense of stylization. Lee Mead pretty much barks out the song by comparison.

  • @kmillard I completely agree. There is no comparison. This is not a good rendition at all.

  • @msymsed Another thing I notice is that there is a certain sense of peace and serene acceptance in Donny's character as he addresses the Almighty where this rendition seems to take on an air of bitter defiance.

  • Meh. I prefer Daniel Boys.

  • Do they have a clip of give me my colured coat with Lee Mead as Joseph

  • gorgeous no doubt he was the strongest joesph rite at the end just stunnin !!!!!

  • The way Lee ends this song by raising up the last 2 lines just sleighs me every time. He's the only person I've ever heard sing it that way and he's sure got the chops to do it!

  • donnys better .

  • 1:20 (: haha i love it

  • the best at this is mandragora's scream version sang by contralto morgan lacroix!!!!!!

    alexXx

  • I think Donny's is way better. He seems like he's trying to hard and overacting.

  • love you lee mead, seeing you in basingstoke but won't be the same cuz ur not jospeh :( x

  • i think they would have had it perfect if they mixed Lee's passion and voice with Donny's build up and acting. it they do that they r unbeatable!

  • as everyone compares him to donny, i guess no one realizes that him and donny are singing to completely different keys???

  • Oh My G-d Lee please come to the U.S. I love you.

  • It sounds like he has to work very hard to sing this song. His voice comes out way better in the higher register. This guy can obviously sing well, but Donny's voice is better suited for a song in this vocal range.

  • STOP COMPARING HIM TO DONNY! Donny will never do this kind of thing again!

  • they actually changed the music for donny to make it higher

  • I listened to this one and to Donny's. Lee's has soooo much more passion and I personally think his voice is stronger. Donny does this thing.. i don't know how to describe it.. Stylized Cracking??

  • @addiople The thing with Mead v. Osmond though is that the Biblical Joseph was portrayed as somewhat effeminate and very boyish. Osmond captured that much better than Mean did. Osmond has the softer voice, gentler mannerisms, and he just seems more humble than Mead. Don't get me wrong, I love them both, I just thing that Osmond is better suited to this particular role.

  • @pyrotheevilplatypus

Good point! And I don't think that one is more suited than the other.. They both bring something different to the role. There are pro's and con's to both portrayals :) I know everyone has their favorites as well! You should watch the documentary on Lee's prep for this show - its great! :)

  • @addiople Lee has a much prettier body, too !!

  • @addiople Lee's voice is more Broadway-esque, if you know what I mean :D I prefer this version too :)

  • i like both this guy and donny. they have a different style. but both are really good

  • @argileskull I like both too. i couldnt seperate the 2 to say one is better. cause both are just so amazing :)

  • @argileskull i couldnt agree more :)

  • Thing is Donny will never do a live musical theater show again, just his Vegas act, and if the worse you can say about Lee is you like Donny better (without benefit of an entire video) then that's pretty dam good and Lee will be doing MT for a long time to come. There were a heck of a lot of others Jospehs over the years and it really always comes down to these two and each has his own preference. You may here or there get someone to like someone else but these 2 performers are the definitives.

  • This guy is very attractive though :-D

Donny's peformance gives me goosebumbs... amazing!

  • Union high school in nj is doing it and I'm in it. i'm part of the children's choir.

  • He definetly has a voice, but Donny Osmond is quite a lot better. Lee does not hit each note with stregth like Donny.

  • Lee is great. This was at a dress rehearsal before he actually opened the in the show. Its a different interpretation and its a minute and a half. Donny, who I love also, had many more appearances in the show and the video everyone compares it to was made for dvd where you film each scene separately until its just the way you want. Check out Lees ALW Party in the Park after he has been in the part a while.

  • Well he can definitely sing...

  • he honestly, is no where near as good as donny. and i didn't like the way he sung it |:

  • This guy is good but no where near as good as Donny. Donny is by far the very best Joseph!!!

  • *cough* Donny is better *cough* lol

  • i saw joesph 4 times twice wive friends once wive my mum,dad and 6 brothers and once wive my boyfriend and each time he was playing the part he was so good as joesph he played the part great hope he does another musical again soon and does another cd he has a great voice

  • lee,....rock lee...teehee xD

ok so he's gonna be the new fiyero? Let's see how he'll do :)

  • I'm really excited about it, I want to see wicked again with him in it!

  • i don't really love his voice

    at all

  • i love lee :D

I'm seeing him in 5 days in lord arthur savile's crime! SO EXCITED. I've already seen him 2 times live and met him once :)

  • good for this guy, but I wish I could find footage of Sam Harris playing the role back in the mid-'90s. I was in the show with the rest of my school choir as the kids when it came through town, and Sam was absolutely unbeatable.

  • It sounds really painful at the end ) :

  • wow... that was pretty good

  • Please tell me you're havin a laugh. Les Mis including the part of Mariu,s is one of the most prestigious Musicals ever. Have you seen the amount of rave reviews Gareth has been getting. No matter what excuses you make Lee cannot hit the notes.

  • @Debbie2

Both Gareth and Lee have great voices. There really is no need to be disrespectful to Lee (and Gareth wouldn't thank you for it - in fact, he'd probably be appalled).

Lee's voice is developing all the time - he includes LCE and 'Anthem' (from 'Chess') in his concert repatoire, so he's definitely able to 'hit the notes' now. You really don't tackle those songs (and Lee performed 'Anthem' in front of Tim Rice a few months back) unless you can 'hit the notes'!

  • ah.. yes he can. You haven't heard him sing live,. have you...

  • I get you love GG. And this is the last on the subject. But check out Lee's Party In The Park videos of a full CED and LCE. At the time of this vid Lee was rehearsed to sing it this way so the pitch was perfect for the time. He changed it as time went on in various ways . Also why would GG take a musical on its last legs unless he did not think so? He couldn't fill the seats. Marius is not the lead. You have your preference I have mine. End of story.
