  • This doco and another one called The trench both have the men wearing brand new clean uniforms.

Whilst I appreciate that probably cleanliness was important in the Trenches, surely the producers should have made then men look more realistic.

My Grandfather was a British machine gunner in the war, he joined up when he was 17 and lied to get in. He came back alive with a hand wound.

  • Seems like at that time Single Battles where more like a campaign.

  • Se ve muy bueno el documental!

  • Sir Douglas Haig wasn't moronic- he was only fighting the war with the tactics of the previous ones. It was Churchill that frantically lobbied for the deployment of tanks to break the trench stalemate.

  • the red borron was killing them up

  • My great-grandfather was at Flers-Courcelette, 26th Battalion CEF.

  • can anyone tell me wtf this has to do with the iron maiden playlist I found please?

  • The narrator has a sexy voice

  • Can anyone tell me where I can get a copy of this movie?

I tried my locals libraries and they dont have it. Thanks Kettch for your uploads on the Somme. Watched most of them

  • General Sir Douglas Haig---an absolute moronic general!

  • The Germans were kicking ass by 1915 and 1916

  • for the god damn record, technecaly it was the british but thats only because canada was part of britain at the time

the british put us right on the fucking chopping block

  • my uncle won the medal of honor in this war

  • what the fuck were they thinking? Good God...

  • 2:28 RIVERSOMME MOTHER FUCKER! (insert sidney samson)

    sorry,i had to do it.

  • Wow, this movie is so realistic...everyone is clean shaven wearing nice pressed and clean uniforms. I'm sure that's exactly how it was back in those trenches!

  • 5:37 looks like bear grylls

  • Who cares how much the US participated in World War I? Whatever we did or didn't do in WWI, we made up for it when we saved your sorry skins in the Pacific in World War II. Now show some gratitude or we won't help you next time.

  • @Nikifuj908 amen to that

  • quiero la pelicula mandenme el nombre si

  • @dayvisyc el documental se llama "La Somme seguir" en el enlace para ver el vídeo para verlo en youtube

    y hablar Inglés por favor;)

  • I cant find this movie The Somme on piratebay... Is it the real name on the movie?

  • @ownarn yes it is simply called The Somme, someone else uploaded it to youtube (link in the video)

  • Its a documentary, not a movie

  • @ownarn i got the movie at the National WWI musem, go there

  • @ownarn try 'The Somme - From Defeat to Victory'

  • Idiotic Americans they didn't do shit in World War1 Canadians were most effective corps taking Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele.

  • @CanadianStereotype

117,000 Americans killed in ww1, I wouldn't say we did nothing, not to mention many had come over as far back as 1914 to enlist in other armies to help, and I don't even guess how many thousands enlisted as Canadians to get over there, so maybe a little more then shit.

  • Around 7:50

The officer says not to run.

    Why?

  • @Truth118 It would tire them out before they got there and reaction time would be slower.

  • mankind is a joke of nature

  • my great granddad was at the Somme and he was one of 7 brothers and he was the only one that survived the war

  • lets all stop our racist comments. Our planet and lives are too precious and rare in this universe to hate each other for abitrary reasons.

  • Thanks the kings and emperors for this slaughter. Namely the emperors of Austria, Germany and the king of Great Britain. And not to forget the tsar of Russia. Dictators all. Good riddance those buggers are dead now. They should have been arrested and hung from the Eiffel Tower by their necks.

  • How is it possible that the mass artillery fire did not destroy the machine guns and barbed wire. Thats the part I never understood. The barrage went on for two weeks.

  • @Highice007

Two Reasons: The Germans had constructed a much more thorough defense than was known, including extremely deep bunkers unaffected by arty fire. Perhaps more importantly, they used shrapnel rounds instead of HE (High Explosive). Shrapnel rounds burst 20 feet above ground, hurling dozens of lead balls out like a shotgun. Great for killing personnel in the open. Terrible for destroying hardened bunkers or wire emplacements. Didn't help that 1/3 of the rounds were duds.

  • @Highice007

Even if HE rounds were used in the barrage, it probably wouldn't have made much difference in the end. The wire would be less of an issue, and concrete MG emplacements would have likely been destroyed, but the German soldiers would have remained.

It was believed that the only way to keep the men moving was to walk together, with the Lt. pushing them along. They thought if men were allowed to run, take cover, etc, that most would just sit in a crater and nothing would get done.

  • All one need do is look at a few of these hate-filled, racist comments to see just how many people can watch something like this, and learn ABSOLUTELY NOTHING from it.

How many times must we go through this before we learn that one people is no better or worse than any other people? We can be proud of ourselves and our country without putting down others.

Trust me. I've been to war. We're all the same inside. We shouldn't have to cut each other in half to figure this out anymore.

  • @seitengewehr98

I COMPLETELY agree with you, and I'll also say this.

    In war, no one wins.

    No one.

  • @seitengewehr98 +1... it seems that we as humans feel the need to put others down to make us feel better about ourselves.

  • @seitengewehr98 omg someone with a brain in another part of the world. And sadly mate the comments by these morons on here are the reason these events occur. It'll happen again although next time it wont merely be a few million with conventional methods. We literally have Anti-matter, huge nukes, Electromagnetic particle beams etc etc. Living in an age where we could wipe each other out with the primitive brain still in full flight

  • @seitengewehr98 If you don't mind me asking sir, from where are you, and where did you serve? I'd be honoured to know.

  • @canuckleful u must be british I can tell by all your u's in words that dont need them :P

  • @wallieburger Canadian actually :)

  • @seitengewehr98 well said my friend well said

  • @seitengewehr98 My gosh!!! Well said Sir.!!!!

  • @seitengewehr98 i agree all the way. war is just the hate of old politicians, and the young men on the battlefield pay the price.

  • worst tactics ever a wall of men running not being able to fire while running while machine guns and artillery mow them down.

  • Thank God Holland wasn't involved.

  • The Americans did'nt do shit !

  • @metalrocks21rapsucks

all they did was replenish men for the british and french soldiers who had little to no fresh troops left, they all got shot up in the previous 3 years of the war

  • My god, I am glad I was not in this war, or any for that matter. I am grateful to those who fought these wars. I saw a film about a 110 year old British World War I veteran who fought at the Battle of Passchendaele. 80 years after the battle, flickering lights under the cracks of his door at night when he was falling asleep gave him artillery flashbacks. How tragic... mankind is so aggressive, we've become so good at war that it cannot be fought (nuclear weapons). We know how to kill, not heal.

  • WWI post re the somme was good (you tube) ty, do you have link to vet film?@tmcquad1

  • @Blutwasser then why does Europeans settled in Canada? Australia? Should they called themselves Canadians? Australians? You Europeans stole everyland from the native american of north america?

  • @Blutwasser does that mean we should all be called Africans? Would you want to be called a African? We are a bunch of animals here in America? We are less than 230 years old, can count the number of wars that we have fought almost on one hand, and we have surpassed every nation in the short amount of time that we have achieved greatness and we are the animals? I think not. Do I detect jealousy? Have a good day.

  • @Blutwasser did the U.S. invade at this time? Next to zero? But how many black, Asian, and Latin countries have Europeans invaded from 1917 to lets say the present? Well, to damn many to count. How about the 1888 Berlin conference where Europeans divided up the African continent between themselves. Wow, how do you divide up a entire continent? My country never did this. Can you say the same thing? And since it has been proven that the first man originated from Africa does that mean we are all

  • @Blutwasser the United States already looked good before intervening in any European conflict and our involvement was the result of defeated (and close to defeated) European nations asking for our involvement not that we had anything to claim or gain in this involvement. The problems that existed in the world were mainly the result of European intervention in business that was not theirs. See unlike Europe pre-1917 the U.S. kept mainly to itself. How many African, Asian, and Latin countries did

  • @Blutwasser cut off aid for a bit and allow someone else to take the forefront. Who is going to do it France? The U.K.? Russia? Sweden? Germany? Who will BE ABLE to take the place of the United States and do it as well since 1917 as we have? India? China? They Indians and Chinese can barely take care of their own country do you seriously they believe or even care for the rest of the world? Give me a break. When America does go down do you know how many nations will go down with her? Believe me

  • @Blutwasser were on a high. What advantage did Americans have sending thousands of her sons to die on foreign battlefields? If we wanted to look good why not send troops to quell uprisings in Mexico, Central, and South America? Why go halfway around the world to Europe to look good when Americans could have done the same thing and gotten the same results in our backyard? But maybe the United States should "pullback" and all others to take the lead and lets see how far they get. Maybe we should

  • @Blutwasser Well, first off it is hard trying to trade and provide for the welfare of your citizens when half of the world is at war. Remember even though it was not our business Europeans BEGGED the United States to get involved even though vast majority of the population wanted nothing to do with what was going on over there. Just so we can look good? I suggest you read about how before our entry into World War One the United States was living it up. Everything was peachy and Americans

  • My god battle tactics were so bad back then...

  • @Blutwasser Umm... you can't blame the USA for every problem in the world. We usually come late to every war because most of the time it really was none of our business to begin with (World War 1 and World War 2 for example). You seem to forget that European militaries made some of their own mistakes getting involved in other countries business, Britain in Palestine for example, France in Algeria, and Russia in Afghanistan.

  • what movie or documentary is this

  • Americans were they had a tiny part they were actually assinged to the ANZACs. Research a bloke called Sir General John Monash the commander of the ANZACS in France

  • @Blutwasser Well you think we shouldnt have been in Iraq or Vietnam, which I agree with, so which other wars did we come too late in? Would you be referring to all the other wars we've kicked ass in? If we fuck the other country 6 ways from Sunday seems like we weren't too late. And your mistaken, we didnt invade Iraq because they wouldn't trade with us, (we're the ones who imposed economic sanctions on them) we invaded because our president was a fucking moron. But the American people kick ass.

  • brave men died on both side

  • brave men died on both side

  • What? Somme wasnt the greatest battle in WW1.

The greatest was Verdun or not?

  • @TheKraut88 Verdun was the embodiment of trench warfare , the senseless and the cruelty of this first big industrial war, but the most casualities were "achieved" at the Battle of the Somme.

Brave men died on both - "innocence dies at first" isn't just a saying. I dont believe mankind will be able to learn from its failures, there won't be any peaceful ending until the last man on earth stops breathing. Call me a cynic..

  • Albanis2 is just a guy who need to go to grammar school. You need to caml the fuck down. People, go look at his channel.

  • i mean calm

  • and what the fuck you come into my channel and comment here. Typical left wing brainwashed European kid. i freaking hate ignorant Europeans. when did i say USA did participate the Somme. i do know my history on Somme, Albanis2 is just an online abuser. You're the one being ignorant. when did i say USA participate in the Somme. did i say USA participate in the Somme? NO

  • @airbornetr00per You hate Americans huh? Hate to break it to you but we saved your ass. Twice. You guys are a bunch of pussies. You got your ass handed to you in both wars, and we had to come save your tea drinking bitchholes. So please, if your going to talk about war, show a little respect.

(Oh, and you seem to love the term 'wanker'. Is that because you brits were sitting around jerking off while America was kicking ass and killing Germans? Just curious.)

  • @austinvanderlyn so what? you liberated france and helped UK abit but USSR did all the dirty job _ALL_ Allies saved eachothers "asses" during WW2. No country could take out germany alone they was simply to strong

  • @austinvanderlyn The US only saved Australia in WW2, The European theatre was already won before D-Day. The US didnt save Europe from the Germans, you saved it from the Russians

  • world war one was not an american war ppl! get ur facts right

  • @Giallo007 Actually America was in the war.

  • @funnyforyou69 it came in in the last few months.. the war was a european war..

  • @funnyforyou69 America didn't enter the war until April 1917 and didn't start fighting major engagements until mid 1918

  • omfg there is some EPIC FAIL going on in the comments... US wasnt in the war until 1917, until then they were sending ammunitions to the british. And furthermore there were no Allies and Axis, thats WW2 buddy. The austro-german empire were called the Central powers. So for you kiddies telling us that US was there, put your fucking xbox controller down and open a history book... kthnxbai

  • This English-American says huzzah for Britain! And I agree, the French and British sacrifices and efforts are what mostly helped win the War; the USA was there obviously to help fight, but really to bolster the depleting Allied manpower, the French and British casualties of which had been killed, crippled, etc. in fighting Germany themselves from August 1914 through at least the Winter of 1917/18. That's reality.

  • Actually it was the final British push that won the war along with the ANZACS , Canadians & the Indian army . They pushed the Germans back by combining infantry support and tanks . However they didn't follow it up 21 years later , the Germans copied and you had Blitzkreig .

  • @dafydd67 The Indians were no longer on the Western Front after 1915. As for the final push, all the Allies were making the final push, there was no one nation that was more important than another. The Big 3 (US, UK & France) were all needed.

  • @MrShaneVicious That is where you are wrong . It was the British who devised and started and led the final push under Rawlinson . There were three Indian brigades present who took part and because the French had suffered under the previous offensives they were propped up by the newly arrived Americans . The credit for the final push lies squarely at the feet of Britain , Cananda , Australia , New Zealand and the dominions .

  • @dafydd67 The French had recovered by 1918. All of the Allies were involved in the final push. While Rawlinson and the 4th Army are mostly responsible for the victory at Amiens August (August '18), It was the French mostly who defeated the Germans at the Second Battle of the Marne (July '18). The Americans then went on the offensive at St. Mihiel (Sept '18) and then again in the Meuse-Argonne (Sept-Nov '18).

  • On Sept 26th Foch ordered an Offensive by all the Allies, Belgian, French, British and American. There were over 130 divisions with another 60 in reserve against 190 German Divisions. The numbers alone tell you it was an all Allied effort.

  • My great granddad fought at the some with a U.S. Calvary unit.

  • dude, the USA werent even involved in the somme battle, shut the dirty lying dickhole you call a mouth...

USA WASNT EVEN IN THE FUCKING WAR when the somme battle took place -.- dumbass fucking american. .

  • That shows how much you know about ww1. Yes they were you are a sad peice of shit. Fuck you.

  • .... OKay,

    somme battle : 1st july 1916 to 18 november 1916

Allied countries involved in battle : Brittain, Canada,France, Australia, New-Zealand, south africa

commanders : Douglas Haig and Ferdinand Foch.

USA enters war : April 1917. ( this is after the somme battle in case you can't read dates like a normal person)

See ? Shut the fuck up now, you know NOTHING about world war one, and it shows.

  • @Albanis2 I'm glad the US wasn't there in 1916, what a terrible war. It was European pride that helped to caused both the World Wars and the US had to go in and help fix the problem both times. The US has some serious problems but "world peace" today (this is hard to say considering the middle east) is partly due to the US staying a major military power after World War II. Having such a strong military presence keeps some (say like Hitler) in check from starting a war... Let's learn to avoid war

  • Comment removed

  • fine.... I will send you the dozens of millions of proof I have by a private message soon so you will shut the fuck up...

  • @funnyforyou69 what a wanker!

  • @Albanis2 how about just dumbass. dont be rascist

  • @Albanis2 Sorry for my countryman's complete idiocy and apparent inability to read a date...I beg you understand this is not indicative of Americans as a general demographic. Though admittedly, it seems to be a consistent trend that our (American) Youtube/internet population in general finds ways to outdo themselves regarding made-up history. Americans, my self included, are proud of what our armed forces have done...but we don't all have to change history to do it...

  • @Albanis2

The USA entered the war in april 1917 fortunately by the side of the allies.

Youre saying fucking americans, but they saved your british ass.

Here in Spain we didn't have those problems

  • @Albanis2 No, not in this battle, but the Americans came later. Yes they did fight on the somme.

  • @Kippenbestaan US weren't involved around this time, I think they got into the war in 1917, that's what he's trying to say I believe.

  • @Albanis2 Hey. He's a retard. Some of us actually have an education.

  • @Albanis2 i am an american but i fully agree with you , sorry for some of my uneducated ignorant countrymen . some of us however ,are educated and understand your great sacrifices. Thank You !

  • @Albanis2 USA didnt HAVE to be in that war....they should not have even joined...you europeans just started ww1 b/c of military competetion, and to see who would be the "big dog" in europe...not for "freedom" or any of that bullshit...ww1 was for nothing...the REAL reason USA got in the war was to make sure that the new russia (ussr) would not spread b/c of america's hatred for communism...

  • @burgersforreal The U.S. entered the war when germany's U boats accidently hit a u.s. cruise boat and killed 300 u.s. civilians.

  • @IsaacD39 Wrong, that is only a partial reason...Woodrow Wilson entered the war to help the allies win it but he mostly went over there to make sure that communism does not spread...dont try to out smart an american history professor because you wont. And that stupid letter to mexico about asking to attack u.s is a fraud..there is no proof of that whatsoever...it was deffidently an attempt by UK to get us in faster

  • @burgersforreal

"Woodrow Wilson entered the war to help the allies win it but he mostly went over there to make sure that communism does not spread"

    ?????

Do you honestly believe that Imperial Germany was a communist bastion.

  • @valois5 germany?? ur confused..im talking about the USSR..after it's establishment of the russian revolution.

  • @Albanis2 he might be a dumbass but pointing out if he is American or not is moot. besides, anybody not brave enough to get on a ship and come to the new world was a chicken shit asshole loser anyway

  • even though my doughboys weren't there yet, I still have respect for our British allies and my German ancestors.

  • @Dogmeat1950

I dont see you doing anything better than complaining

  • Seems like this is a great documentary, has anyone seen it in its entirety?

  • I'd like to find the whole program somewhere? Anyone help? Thanks

  • U can find it on historychannel(dot)com

  • makes me proud to say i am English. There was a great story i read once that boosted my pride even more, the Germans were on a routine patrol laughing and joking about the pathetic ways of the english, next thing, 30 german soldiers are on the floor dead, guess who BEF.

  • @andii194 One must never forget the part us other 'Brits' played and more importantly the Canadians and Anzacs . There were no winners in WW1 and we are still living with its outcome today .

  • I know, i know. It was an unnecessary war ran by aggressiveness. I have full respect for all empire troops that played a role in the ending of the war and sacrificed their lives for this.

  • @dafydd67

    Lets see,

    A. the victory over German agression with plans of annexing parts of Russia (which they suceeded in doing) and the annexation of Belgium

    B. The preservation of democratic self autonomy for many of Europe's peoples.

C The prevention of a German led European based Empire which like Napoleon's Europe would have continued to threaten the rest of the World.

  • Questo è un film o un documentario?

  • machine gun bullets dont care about ideals and moral. they just wound and kill. those poor guys dont deserve armchair generals discussing what rifles they used or how much "betta" their army was. they fought for the men next to them and they left the delusiveness of the safe trenches to face machinegun fire because of this. no one can tell how they felt but iam sure they had other things in mind before their suicidal attack than ideology.

  • Amen possumGFX.... very very true

  • HOO RAH!

  • Comment removed

  • Well, you know what they say about Italy. German joke from WWII: Italian tanks have 6 gears - 2 forward and 4 reverse.

  • @nicuribe haha same in austria: why do italian tanks have 4 reverse and 1 forward?

-because the enemy can come from behind too.

  • @aaronharms123456 The romanians did an execellent job in the encirclement of Svestopal in the Crimea in world war two. Thier PE-2 pilots were also exceptional, scoring kills against every airframe the soviets fielded and destoying over 10,000 soviet vehicles during the course of the war. Better than Italy ever did.

  • how long was the enlistment in those days?

  • @Cisco650 For the US, 8 months deployment. For britian i believe it was the same.

For every other nation (the ottomans might have had "tours" but i doubt it) it was "your in till its over"

  • oh and in WW2 the cold killed most of the axis and yes Russia somehow lost 20 million men. WTF?

  • Thats because Russias troops were untrained and had these things called 'Mass Charges' which basically meant that a mass of Russian troops would mass and... well... charge the enemy. Sometimes right into MG42s and other entrenchments it was used as a shock tactic. Though it would get the job done, there would be many, many casualties. Also the fact that Commissars would shoot their own men just because they thought they werent fighting hard enough, didnt really help.

  • not jus that - poor planning and the germans simply being better.

  • im not saying just that but yes most of the Red Army were only conscripted farmers. What won them the war was their mentality id think, and the fact that theyd be forced to keep marching to their inevitable doom. poor chaps

  • @SuperToaster1234 Well Zhukov being a tactical and strategic genuis the likes of Rommel, Guderian and Patton didnt hurt either. Nor did stalins allowance of such a devastating defeat in the first few months to allow the germans to overextend supply across russia which had almost no paved roads, and to draw upon the average russians sense of revenge. Had the first few months went better for russia, its possible he would have faced for dissent for the officer purge and mistakes.

  • @SGTGerman Germans werent better persay. The Kar98 rifle was subpar compared to the Mosin, the PPSH was better suited to cold and urban warfare than the MP40. The 12.7mm Shvak was better than the mg34 (mg42 came out in, 1942, by 42 it was all but over for the germans in russia) The T-34 was frontally immune to everything the germans had but 88s and Pak40s (no panzer higher than a IVD at the time) the germans had two things working for them, stalins officer purge, and combat experiance.

  • ur point?

  • @SGTGerman Merely pointing out youre incorrect about your assessment of operation barbarossa forces and OOBs. (order of battle)

The germans invaded russia with little more than they invaded france with. The extra reserves were in Albania and greece. As for equipment, the germans never got proper winter gear for the first winter, nor did they have superior equipment than the soviets. The german infantry rifle was from 1898..the only thing modern about the germans was thier close air support

  • all i have said is that the german army was smaller but far better trained what ever the reason.

and their rifle may hav been old but it was still v. good.

  • well the panzer divisions were quite modern for the time, but the blitzkrieg strategy was ineffective due to the winter, the shear size of western russia, and the stretched supply lines of fuel, invading russia is a suicide move because of the size and the climate, it was a stupid move on the high commands part, one that sealed the war in defeat for them

  • @minigun20 What made them advanced in 1939 and 40, were pretty much standard eqpuiment by the time of the invasion of the soviet union. Radios in every tank, 10x optical sights, armored ammo bins, and tungsten core APHE rounds were state of the art during the battle of france, but the soviets by the time of the invasion were at least capable of deploying the same things, even if they chose not to employ them in great numbers.

  • you realize this is a different war right?

  • @SGTGerman 20 million, no. But they did lose a lot.

  • wierd? far as i was aware the Germans kicked Russia ass. oh and the reason they killed more hungarians etc is they were mainly in that theatre and were shit anyway.

  • @SGTGerman In world war one, the germans didnt kick russias ass, russia, as usual, kicked its own ass.

Most of the entire russian army was swept up in the communist revolution and thier army marched home and gave up.

In world war two, the russians tore the germans to peices after the initial assault on russia. The germans had about 4 good months before it all went south for them.

  • ur point?

  • i agree. you're very right.

  • u r such a gigantic idiot that it would require a book to respond to this nonsense that u write.

even forgetting the fact the almost the entire german navy and airforce was in the west, ther german troops in western europe, italy etc,the guns trucks jeeps, clothes, food, money we gave russia to survive

PS: britain is a has-been and america is the current thing

  • @Stormcrow180

u r just as stupid as i had imagined,r u even aware the wikipedia is a editable online tool and not a historical archive?

the figures i am quoting are from british war office statistics, german reicharchives as supplied to winston churchill(which is listed in his memoirs)-hard to see why churchill would lessen german numbers and increase british ones.

this figure is also found in niall ferguson book-if u even know who he is :D

    dunce

  • @roflcoppterlol

    moron:

check the facts before u reel off rubbish:

in 6 months total brit gains:6 miles

    british casualties:432000

    french:218000

    german:237000

    source:winston churchill,prior wilson

somme was one of the biggest disasters EVER in brit army history:the only consolation for morons like u is inflated or imagined german casualties even though this data has been there for more than 50 years

  • That's the American's cavalier philosophy nowadays. Without us there would be no victory. Fair play, you did save us, however, you would never have invaded Iraq without British help. Your country would never have existed without the British. So get your head out of your arse.

  • @10sboyz

    dude reality check you u:

ur nation is a THIRD rate military power today-it aint 1856,if we invaded the british isles i give ur army a week at best(if it fights at all)

i can understand the fact that our ecnomic and military dominance causes jealousy and a inferiority complex for pigmy nations like urs

    DEAL with it

    cheers

  • yank weve got a better army than you you say u hardly lost any men in the war

thats because i joint 1 year before it ended

  • losingmore men does not equal victory:you say we came late-we say we came at the right time:with russia out, france and italy collapsing, britain facing starvation and demoralisation due to uboat and disaster like passchendale our entry gave the allies that all important morale boost as much as it gave the germans a deprciation:without USA there would be NO victory
