Eritrea never kicked Italy's ass. The Italians were kicked out of Eritrea during WW2 by the Ethiopian and British Armies and the UN decided to federate them with Ethiopia. They wanted to be seperate because after Italian colonization and some mixing they felt like they were different from Ethiopians. Now it's an independent country (since 93) but they have very little good land and all their neighbors hate them (Yemen, Sudan, Ethiopia ...) because they've attacked them all.
