I had this problem too, but luckily I live in Canada where there is still continental philosophy. To those that say analytic philosophy is "the real deal" .... sure... if you want to be able to prove trivial nonsense. Continental philosophy is the real deal.
@MisterTutor2010 That says more about the value our culture places on philosophy than it does the value of philosophy itself. In Greece, the philosopher, athlete and artist alike were revered with the same amount of dignity. The US has zealots like Palin and Tebow clamoring for every second of attention, and the idiots eat it up. In a country of more philosophy, more learning, less of mere entertainment, we would not see people like Sarah and Tim on TV. We need more, not fewer philosophers.
Whoever you were posting this, thank you so much! It is so encouraging to learn I am not the only one with those problems. It is so fucking true and relevant and so me!
Look at philosophers of the past. The "great" thinkers; Buddah, Confucius, Jesus, Mohammad, and Moses, John Lennon, "comedian" George Carlin, among others, practiced in "their field" by providing "advice" (observations) to others. They did not have college degrees to my knowledge. Their philosophies were developed by life experiences and observations about the situations, problems and obstacles they faced .
Mhm, as much as I enjoy george Carlin and have respect for the other you mentionned, this has nothing to do with the likes of Plato, Descartes, Spinoza, Kant or with "Foucault, Deleuze and Nietzsche". "Jesus and John Lennon" are to philosophy what "changing your car's motor oil" is to organic chemistry.
oh my god, this is funny. and so f$#$ing true, its sad. I want to study Foo-ko and Guattari and De-looze and study critical theory, too. But that isn't philosophy. Can I study Derrida, in France?
The problem is that the analytics react violently to the continentals because of their social-literary approach to concepts instead of something more cryto-scientific. Neither side is at this rate going to admit both have good ideas.
I'm a philosopher and I don't have a degree because I don't need that to ponder the wonders of life the universe and everything (That last part is Douglas Adams)
I'm not sure I get it... I mean, on one hand, it is true that continental philosophy is a minority in the US, but it isn't by any means nonexistent. On the other hand, to say that philosophy is all logic, grammar, and math is substantially inaccurate; There are plenty of philosophy graduate programs whose focus is not in the Analytic tradition, but in areas of Applied Ethics, Feminism, and Pragmatism. This film is, like the others, a vast misrepresentation of Grad School.
@datamon21 yeah it's an exaggeration for sure, but I've hear similar things from various professors about how difficult it is to seriously study/get work in areas such as continental philosophy and pragmatism. This conversation isn't too far off from some conversations I've had with professors and students at conferences. Of course, many of them were analytic philosophers...
@NuOphiuchi
Except most of the famous philosophers throughout history who have made a huge impact did study philosophy... it's not really like English at all....

I just don't get continental philosophy. I even finished reading two Foucault books... there is not much of an argument in there...
Oppositum 2 months ago
@Oppositum Foucault isn't a good example. Neither is Deleuze really... Which makes me wonder who made this video.

Why do you need a degree to change the world with your ideas?

Continental philosophy is fun to read as bedtime stories, but analytical is the real deal.
