The two top female Country/BGrass singers in the USA, entwining their voices in a purely classic Americana ballad. I'm not sure you could have done any better than this in this lifetime. Thank you for posting this ~ I don't need any video to "see" Emmylou and Iris blending their voices in this wonderful harmony. Iris is knitting her brow around the words; Emmylou is closing her eyes, tilting her head slightly, and smiling.
Takes me back about 40 years, a cotton mill town, a young boy sitting on his Paps porch picking the Wildwood Flower on an old Gibson flattop guitar, as cotton trucks from the Mississippi delta rolled toward the mill warehouse. The scent of raw cotton, an impending rain, and fresh brewed coffee in my grandmothers kitchen.
@RebbePiper You just 'created' that for each of us ~ thru your words, we all 'smelled' the cotton, the rain, the coffee, and 'heard' your old Gibson. You should write for somebody.
@namflah1 You're exactly right! In fact, Emmylou cites the Everly Brothers' harmony as one of her strongest influences while growing up. In very recent years, Iris DeMent and ELH have blended their voices in increasing numbers of songs ~ I can only pray that becomes a routine for them. I could listen to their entwined voices all day long, and sleep with EXCELLENT dreams all night!
Folks, this is just about as good as it gets. Two sincere artists who believe in the music they sing, have lives that have given them the pain to sing it with, and the God-gift of angelic voices.
Great version of Wildwood Flower. However, this song wasn't written by A.P. Carter. It's been around since the mid 1800s. The original title was "I'll Twine Mid The Ringlets."
I am grateful beyond words for this posting. I am also encouraged that there are no dislikes. Maybe the public is becoming more aware of what constitutes true quality vocals.
I am a long-time fan of the Carter family, and these ladies do a wonderful job on A.P.'s Wildwood Flower. Would that music could return to the simplicity of a time when songs were birthed not by spindoctors, but rather by it's more legitimate source, the hearts and the experiences of those with a story to tell, which many of us could relate...
No autoharp? Emmylou plays autoharp. I don't know how well. This is a lot lower than I sing it.

As I listen to this rendition, I hear echoes of Sarah and Maybelle.
Perhaps they were listening and saying "well done".

If the Everly Brothers had been sisters this is what they would've sounded like - on a good day.

Very nice. A great song. See Wikipedia. Written by the composer of the
Civil War song "Lorena".
Woody Guthrie used tune for his WWII song "The Good Reuben James".
Tnx 4 the great post.

I love how Emmylou refuses to dye her gray hair. I could sing this song all day and have listened to it all my life.
Where is Iris in the video? I think I hear her singing.
