No man, the bells actually add a lot for the drum line. I dont know if you have ever seen the drum line march into the stadium but the bells have a pretty good part in the cadence every year. This past year it was beverly hills cop and last year they played Radio by Jurassic 5 as part of the cadence. It was pretty awesome.
the mallet part is interesting enough I'd learn it and the other parts, especially the tenor part are harder and a better warm up than the Stanford Double Beat that my HS uses
Is it just that people just haven't seen marching mallets before? It's not that surprise. Look up old school Blue Devils and other old Div. 1 Corps. Many things that are in the pit now were marched back then, such as the bells, xylophone and even timpani. Chill out...

hate them with a passion. you can only play funkytown and dont you want me baby so many times before it just gets old.

You can choose from two drumlines at Virginia Tech! The Marching Virginians you see here, or the ROTC band, The Highty-Tighties!

Go Hokies! My HS band marched mallets too (Go Hawks) and it always rocked. Drum line is cool, but horns rule!
