i have done a similar thing using 4 outputs and an 08M PICAXE. to drive 8 seven segments with decimal points using 9 shift registers, i have some videos on my channel about them i might do a few more. the picaxe receives 8 bytes of serial @4800 baud to either control the display directly or process ASCII characters to show as symbols
