  • Muchas gracias por compartirlo.

  • das ist ferdamt Die Besate was in Jazz gibt's!

  • Several people confuse her name with Buddy Holly, but ironically they both died the same year (1959).

  • man if i could merge two women together it would be BILLIE HOLIDAY I LOVE HER FIRE and DOROTHY DANDRIDGE she dorothy she doesnt need a reason

    thats my dream woman

  • What a beautiful song and wonderfully sung by the great Lady Day! I also love the rendition that she does on one of her last albums "Lady In Satin" (this album is a MASTERPIECE!) which has such a gorgeous musical arrangement from Ray Ellis. I wish she sung more songs with strings and an orchestra.

  • @MusicLoverBrian1 I'm right with you on this.

  • Funny, I don't care, but remember how some talked about how physically beautiful she was before. Just holding on to my heritage, it's the suffering of her heart that really makes her beautiful. I only wish her to know how beautiful is her heart. Thank you Lady Billie, you will always be in my and perhaps in all of our hearts.

  • Der Song wurde von Abel Meeropol geschrieben!

  • Not the roughest of times could conceal her great beauty, great sense of fashion, her fabulous vocal persona and style and her intelligence. And her class and dignity. After her terrible childhood, I think dignity became extremely important to her. She certainly dressed the part; it's hard to find any photo of her where she isn't outfitted with absolute elegance.

  • Amazing. I have electricity corsing through my body. That's what she does to me.

  • great footage..

  • Although she was sick, I see beauty, class, grace and a lady. I thank the Creator for her and her courage to follow her heart and her dream to share her gift with the world...Thank you Lady Day. Rest in Peace & Power!

  • She was already showing the strain by then... Saad

  • gotta love the smoke floating around...that's the perfect atmosphere...

  • @graphina17 I was thinking the same thing! :) I don't understand how singers back in the day could sing with all that cigar and cigarette smoke in the air!!!

  • I was born in Aug 58 and didn't have a clue what was being made around me... pure history!!!!! Thank you for this post!

  • SHE WAS FINE BUT SHE NOT EVEN OLD HERE BILLIE DIDNT LIVE LONG SHE WAS IN HER MID 30'S RIGHT HERE SMH TERRIBLE WHAT THEY DO TO MY BEAUTIFUL BLACK PEOPLE JUST SAY NO 4REALS....

  • @SEXYQUPID it's not true. this shot is with her Pianist Mal Waldron. He was with Lady from 57 till her death. Possibly it's from a TV Broadcast from 58.

  • @watcherof47 UM WHAT R YOU TALKIN BOUT SHE DIED IN HER FORTIES DO YOU RESEARCH 1ST BE4 U SPEAK

  • @SEXYQUPID This is exactly from 10.07.1958. The TV Broadcast was one Week later 18.07.1958. The Location was Newark, New Jersey. Art Ford Jazz Party. She was near the mid 40's, what she never reached. So make your lessons and take your advice for yourself.

  • @watcherof47 UM WHAT R YOU TALKIN BOUT SHE DIED IN HER FORTIES DO YOUR RESEARCH 1ST BE4 U SPEAK

  • she looks ok to me

  • Nothing special , you could say... But here is God when he accept to show for a while a part of him.self... And notice her absolute beauty in the close up from 1:30. The phisicisation of meaning.

  • @oysterpippo I think she was beautiful, and so did others. You have to keep in mind that beauties of that day were Marilyn Monroe and the like. And Billie Holiday packed on the same weight in the same places. She was ill when she looked like this. Nobody liked to see it. She wasn't skinny because she was dieting and playing a lot of tennis.

  • Lady---Queen---Day.

  • I'm Greek and I feel proud that women like Billie Holiday had there part in History and especialy in music for I will never have the chance to express my emotions the way she did through singing!! I don't got the voice nore the feeling to do the thing's she has done but I'm proude to know her name and her legacy .. parden my english it has been a long time since I have left the U.S.A . and the longer u stay away the more u miss out on ...

  • man she was fine

  • when did beyounce play billie?

  • they don't have known artist like this that can delight a crowd. R&B is a joke compared to this form of artistry

  • @bobbymarsh1 What do you mean? you don't like people like Stevie Wonder or Curtis mayfield and not James Brown?

  • looks like the saxophonist is playing a King Super 20 with the underslung neck. neato

  • oh my god!

  • A Godess!!!

  • Its easy to listen to Lady after all these years. She had a way with a song that no matter how many times you have heard it always has its own little something. Wonderful

  • She had a very haunting voice. You can really feel her pain.

  • WHO is the female guitarist behind her? I'm sure Billie had a say in that choice...

  • Answered my own question by research: It's Mary Osborne, who was a phenomenal player... great article on her on Wikipedia and check out her clips here on YouTube...

  • Many stupid comments... affffff

  • it' s no wonder that's she haunts us generation after generation. She gave so much, and got so little. but we all know that, don t we. not to change the subject., but that is a lady playing that big old Stromeberg?

  • she looks emaciated here

    drugs taking their toll.

  • Yeah its amazing how people sweep this under the rug even today. so sad someone can save these entertainers someone is around them everyday and see this self destructive activity and say nothing. look at lil wayne and lindsay lohan 2 talented people wasting away before or very eyes. so so sad :o(

  • lindsay lohan? talented??

  • alicia looks like her more but i think erykah badu sounds closer even chrisette michelle and an elle fitz movie would be grand and ms jill scott for that roll for sure

  • u know what? it would be cool, if the movie was redone and I'm casting Alicia Keys!!!

  • Alicia Keys is already set to play Lena Horn in a Biopic of her life, so you might want to "recast"..lol. I always thought Jill Scott would be better at playing her.

  • You DON'T KNOW JAZZ, so go sit down somewhere and shut up!!

  • and your a yuppie airhead retarded snitch bitch! Alicia KEYS cant sing neither can MARY J BLAH!! if you followed the comments then ya punk ass would know who the hell i was talkin about!! stay the fuck out of other peoples comments!

  • Wow...can you be anymore ignorant?

  • BTW that's Mary Osborne, groundbreaking early female Jazz guitarist on guitar. There's a lovely clip of her own recording from the 50's on here. Passed away in 92.

  • This woman! I love the way she sings phrases!

  • I SIMPLY LOVE HER SHE'S SUCH A "LADY"

  • Love Billie ... thank you for this video.

  • A theatre and arts critic said a couple of years ago... "There are two types of people in this world... those that get Billie Holiday and those that don't". I do and have so for 35 years. We miss you Billie!!

  • gracias Billie

  • I could NOT finish "Lady Sings The Blues." It's just way too inaccurate. However, I will always love Lady.

  • I wish that there was some type of account from the people, that knew her that would've given an acct about her other. All the reading and comments about her always talk about drugs.

  • I watched a documentary a while ago that described what you just saying

  • do you remember the name of the documentary? i'd love to see it

  • WOW!!!! FABULOUS!!!! 5*****

  • La mas grande

  • I love Billie I have her Lady in Satin LP reminds me of Amy Winehouse but miles better

  • if you are very unhappy,

    you can listen to billie

you will feel better, believe me

  • does anybody know the name of the guitarist? i've never seen footage of a female guitarist in this genre or time period.

  • it's Mary Osborne

  • Comment removed

  • i love how there is a girl playing guitar here it seems not very comon to see that.

  • She is V skinny in this video when was this?

  • I agree she was a musical genius.

  • I'm italian and i'm a rocker,but i love her so much.I simply adore her,she's the best.

  • The once and future voice of jazz. She touched people in a way they will never be touched again.A musical genius and a gift to us all.

  • Beyonce should away from acting the part of ANY artist that really can sing!...she better off just doing what she does. Her part in that movie was a joke!....I guess thats Hollywood.

  • @sixstring4 ITA

  • @sixstring4

beyonce really can sing though..not being biased or anything.

  • @sixstring4 Agree

  • @sixstring4 - couldn't have said it better myself.

  • she was well lagged singing that one.Still love her tho.

  • Diana Ross already did a movie on the Billie Holiday story. It's called ,"Lady Sings The Blues." No other actress could have played that part better than Diana. I like Beyonce but she would not have done this part justice. You should rent it.

  • that movie is an disgrace to Billie's legacy The movie was completely inaccurate exploited her troubles in life while virtually skipping over anything to do with her music. Ross looks NOTHING like Holiday sounds nothing like her and as a last insult the technical consultant was Louis McKay

  • one in a line of violent men who mismanaged robbed and brutally beat her regularly and he is portrayed as savior. I'd like to see a serious movie with a real actor who can handle the demands of such a complex character along the lines of "Ray" or "La Vie en Rose" and not someone's life made into a vehicle for someone else's fame.

  • It's only out of pain that you can sing like that.

  • Wow, didn't know that; changes my view of the movie. Now i'm curious, so must reaearch that.

  • Billie sure was great with these old songs. The melody of this was written by Lorenz Hart and lyrics by Richard Rodgers. I like the woman guitar player, I imagine it was rare to see a woman musician back when this was performed.

  • Hey! if somehow the racist comment (wich I responded) just dissapear well then took off my coment then... cause I wasn't talking with madhoneydew and it got not sense!

  • meant guitar player

  • what is that white dude doing there?

  • It's winter moron

  • ...it's easy to remember and so hard to forget..

  • touching

  • wow she lost alot of weight. that heroin boy

  • Thank you for putting this up...

  • great song...and singer..

  • It's heartbreaking to see how wasted she looked at the end of her life. She was such a beautiful woman.

  • @hootinouts I don't agree with you at all. I know many 43 years old women that look really wasted at that age, and they were not on drugs. Exactly this look and the sensibility within is the thing that describes Billi Holiday!

  • grazie per averlo messo

  • she was pretty!

  • why is she so skinny here

  • Because she was near death. Not long after this Billie passed. She was gravely ill during this period.

  • yeah she had liver disease and heart disease, she passed on July 17, 1959.

  • I hope next year, something is done to commemorate 50 years since she died, like some sort of event.

  • Many thanks for letting us share this marvelous clips, which really captures her greatness and sincerity

  • Does somebody know the lady guitarist? It is first time that I see it..

  • The guitarist is Mary Osborne.

  • scmm42 Thank you very much, my friend

  • Mary was wonderful-used to gig with my teacher ray in the 50-60s.

  • I met Mary in the late 80's and she was still playing great.

  • First time I hear about Mary Osbourne. As a woman jazz guitarist there are not many role models. Wish I heard about her when I was studying. None of my teachers knew her obviously.

  • @scmm42 very influenced to Charlie Christian

  • let it be

  • I think this singer's gonna have a great success and get very well known all around the world. She's stronger than all those rockers wasting their own life with soft thin talents if compareting to her... . She is so absoulutly great. The first, and still now, the greatest quintesencial rocker.

  • Love, she's already well known and was very sucessful in her time (although she had a tragic life and terrible death). She is in fact a legend, well documented in history books and well respected by modern musical scholars the world over. You are right in that she probably set the standard for a what is a quintessential rocker. You are right indeed.

  • Oysterpippo wrote it. And even these rockers addmit it. Nothing to add it.

  • WoW .... Ty @ scmm42 for this posting!

  • She is the best singer all time with an awefully sad voice. I don't usually listen to Billie because her voice reminds me of my time in a poop city. For those who can listen to her without emotion, thank god for the life given to you. RIP Billie.

  • always with emotion. and empathy

    RIP, Billie

  • I know what you mean about not listening to something because it reminds you of unhappier times in your own life. She was so amazing. I can't listen to her without emotion either. I doubt anyone could? Unless they were robots or something...

  • Billie was the greatest in the jazz / blues field. She was a Queen without crown. ¿How does it feel to those rednecks stupid whites discriminating one of a kind human being?

God bless her.......I do love her....In Mexico we adored her in her prime...Billie Holiday forever....

  • This was the year before she died. You can see the pain in her face and feel it in her voice.

  • It is hard to look at Billie and not feel her pain - but I do not know her pain.

    What a waste of talent!

  • NICE VIDEO JIMMY

  • thats amazing about mary osborne always something new to discover about american music and its long history wow

  • Billie was a little girl without a mother, without somebody who had care for her. She was raped by a man who lived in the house of her mother and SHE went in prison.

    Later, she was a baby-whore.

Later, she was constricted to hide because "negro" singers ("negroes") were not accepted.

She was alone, betrayed by everyone.

And you, behind your monitor, at sure... YOU think you are able to be her judge???

    I don't know english.

    You don't know humanity.

  • But Billie Holiday WAS great. What exactly is your point? Are you pissed at people comparing Amy Crackhouse to Billie? Or do you think people only find singers amazing if we know that they have terrible private lives. Whatever, I don't think Amy can compare with Billie. Ever.

  • Excellent !

    Very Very Good

  • who was the femail guitarrist, my curiosity.

  • Looks like Mary Osborne, who played guitar in bands for Coleman Hawkins, Dizzy Gillespie and Art Tatum among others.

  • no one to remember.. ;)

  • Excellent! Who was the guitarist?

  • Quem é esta guitarrista que acompanha a Billie?... Fiquei curioso em saber.

  • lindo!

    esse album é ótimo

  • Excellent footage of Ms. Holiday.
