I contemplated along time on getting this lens but finally decided to spend the extra $50 to $80 dollars and found the Original Canon 50mm f/1.8 Mark I with metal mount! Too many horror story reviews of the Mark II falling apart & cannot handle a short accidental drop even on a carpet! Though the one I have is used & 20+ years old it was in mint shape! There is a reason they lasted 20+ years because they were better built back then. For an extra $50-80 I would suggest others look into it.
I'm not 100% sure, but I think your camera rather than the lens is responsible for the focusing ability in low light. I had a sigma 30mm 1.4 (lovely lens - got stolen) and my canon eos 450D (XSi) also had trouble focusing in low light with that on.
I just plunked down 104 bucks for the plastic fantastic lol. I was looking at a mk1 on ebay for $188, but I had to remind myself, that's used and may not last a week... So for the novice like me, that wants some low light lens, this will work for awhile. Hopefully it last as long as you'res lol.
Thanks Nate, I mainly bought it for low light situations, kit lenses suck for that lol. I have really been wanting to explore using M42 lenses on it, so that will be my next step.
I want to buy the t3i and am thinking about getting this lens instead o the standard kit lens. What do you think? Is this a good idea? Can this lens shoot landscapes and do i need the kit lens?
@sylex87 seems like you are just buying the camera body only. the 50mm is best for portraits cause they are prime lenses, prime lenses are best for portraits or singling out the object of which you are shooting cause of the bokeh output and they're sharper because its just 1 zoom, since you want to shoot landscapes 50mm is not a wide enough focal length to capture the field, i'd advise you to just get the kit lens, you get more range
@Smalskin It is louder than most lenses but a LOT cheaper. I don't find the noise distracting. Manual focus IS however a pain. The manual focus ring is small and thin plastic. Hope that helps.
@nate42nd thanks, i think ill buy this. by the way, does 550d have autofocus on movie mode? and is it usable or way too slow? also whats your opinion on Magic Lantern?
@HatroVille Very good choice. I ahve LOVED this lens in the 2 weeks or so I have had it. I have taken many great pics with it. WAY better quality than the lens that comes with the camera and cheaper too. (no zoom or IS though) Have a good day!
Good review, the 50mm F1.8 is a bargin and a must for any camera bag if you ask me. Yes the build quality is not great but at the price of it you can't expect much.. plus if it gets damaged its not like replacing a 50mm f1.2 (Ouch!). On this body or any of the rebel / xxD bodies its an 80mm lens due to the crop factor which makes it great for portrait work. Hey Nate how about putting up a video showing some of your work with this lens? Rick
@cosmoknight74 Man.....I have been shooting all day and this thing is great! I would expect to pay at least twice as much for it. My 1st one had a scratch or piece of debris inside the lens. I took it back to the small photo shop where I got it and they happily exchanged it for a new one. It's my favorite of my 3 lenses that's for sure.
It is good only thing is,with the fixed 50mm you have to stand way back from the subject,carefull not to get run over now!
You gon have a nice day now.

this lens is by far one of the best lenses canon makes... for only 100 bucks... weighs nothing... your stupid if you do not own this lens...
MrRaptur3 2 days ago
This is the best value glas you can buy of Canon.
I use this lens a lot. The only reason I still have the kitlens is IS for shooting movies.

I agree it looks like a toy compared to my 5d ii. But the t1 is a good starter camera.

hi im concidering buying a t2i + this lens.. can you focus manually with this lens too? i dont like autofocus
TIJSNL 6 months ago
@TIJSNL Yes but it's a very cheap plastic very thin manual focus ring. The 1.4 version is much better but 3 times the price. This lens works fine.

Is it too zoomed in on the crop sensor?
Smalskin 8 months ago
@Smalskin Yes, 50mm times 1.6.
nate42nd 8 months ago
@Smalskin its basically a 75mm on a crop sensor like the 550d

They call this the plastic fantastic for a reason!

with the cropped sensor it's more like 85mm on that camera

Is it as bad as how ppl say that it's not usable at f/1.8?
HatroVille 1 year ago
@HatroVille I have found it's fine at 1.8. It will have a narrow depth of field....but it works fine it that's what you're looking for...I love it!

No Zoom, not really concerns me much but no IS?, Will I have issue with handheld shots? 0.0
HatroVille 1 year ago
@HatroVille I have had no issue yet. It's such a fast lens, you can hand hold it.

Exactly we think alike... I don't give much concern about the Noise as long as the lens can get the job done.
Thx for the review! XD
