@tony8999 perhaps there were another vessels. Keel water shows that LPG alters to her port. While bulk carrier prefers to maintain her corse (?) Port to port usually. Or there had been an agreement made via radio VHF to pass starboard to starboard. Or a misunderstanding. Or another vessel made a bullshit. Or steering gear failure. And, finally, navigator's mistake. (sometimes they live the bridge though it's prohibited) Choose the cause you like))
well what happened to the light blue ship (Maersk) is that it had been affected by "bank" effect right before the accident. This was also later concluded in the investigation of the accident the bouyed channel wasent dredged propper. Neither was the bouys in the right place.
Why the Blue ship turned in front of the other vessel we will never know I suppose. Unless there is a record we can find. It was pretty Fucking dumb! They are lucky, very lucky as this type of accident can be a disaster. The shear weight of the Vessels colliding is a very nasty thing to have happen. Huge NRG is involved and Ships are the biggest machines on the planet by far. Broad daylight and fantastic weather make this hard to understand really! Any comments?
Ships are supposed to pass one another PORT to PORT ie left side to left side unless there is an emergency. It looks like the Blue Ship attempted to do this, but way to late. I would say the Watch keeper was inexperienced, decide to follow the rules way to late and did not call the Captain ( who would have contacted the other ship or turned away so the other vessel could not have been in any doubt about avoiding a collision even thought the rules were not being followed.
ok, how do u hit another ship in the middle of the ocean without seeing the other ship coming for miles ?? the blue ship turned directly in front of the other ship ..u r suppose to steer in the opposite direction when a situation like this is about to happen...the blue ship should have been the give way vessel...they both should have steered to their starboard to avoid this..musta been done for the insurance money hoping to sink the ship

if they are constrained by their draft where the hell are their day signals??? and why didn't they both reduce speed in ample time so as to avoid collision.
@johnbigfish Well the failure to reduce speed on maersk holyhead was obviously a human error.
The speed of the Pequot is unknown.
Why they kept to high speed? You can probebly make a long root cause analisys of that.
But how many times have you not as an officer, been encouraged by pilots/agents/owners/charterers to keep a time table that you can not quite keep. And how many accidents hasn´t that resulted in ?
@cruisemate It is true someone it not both are to blame for this incident as appropriate action could have been taking by both. Again i totally understand where you are coming from as everyone charter, owner and master alike are continuously wanting to make good time, although you as an officer you are obliged to up hold your responsibility to take all action to avoid collision and endanger life at sea. Therefore in the case of this incident i do not sympathize with such an excuse!
@johnbigfish Its not an excuse... There is no excuse. It is a explaination.
If none admits the problem and the underlying causes it will just repeat itself time and time again.
In the intrest of profit safety is put aside time and time again. The safety messures that are taken is only alot of paper and checkliststs. Workload, stress, fatiuge are things no one want to adress beacuse it cost money. The training of officers in many countrys are poor. and the pressure to "make it happen" is big.

@johnbigfish The first thing that can bee done is to prohibit private pilot companys. They have a profit intrest which increase their willingness to push to go faster. Also all pilots should have a fixed salary that is not attached to how many ships they pilot. Beacuse that also makes them whant to go to faster and faster.
Then atleast you don´t have to fight with the pilot everytime you enter or leaving port. Today I think we should be safer off many times without him.
clearly thease people piloting both thease ships were ether a. women (who should stay in kitchens making the men sandwiches and or in buisnesses like hair salons, nail parlours and at offices. or b. they were just completely retarded and thought lets play chicken with ships.......
At the trail of the Maersk ship you can see that ithis ship gone off course very fast. The pilot on board should know the local circumstances and be aware of the Bank effect at that spot.
Allthough the captain has full responsebility, the pilot will have a lot to explain and I think they will not accept a: "I did not know..." from the pilot...

that is some serious damage on the Pequot, hope no one got injured.
Some of you need to learn physics, F=M*A. This equation will explain why it is possible for ships to collide, all ships have a lot of MASS, and it don't take much Acceleration to create that much collision Force. Its the same principle with cars.
the other ship should have manouvered to starboard ,,, and pass the ship( in which was filmed ) behind her stern ,,, those were a bunch of idiots ,,, they we're unprivileged !!! or they we're russian's and they we're drunk like shit !!!:))
It also happens all the too commonly because these ships are flying flags of convenience. The crews they pick up from these countries are SO bad, they have no concept of what good seamanship involves. Hence the collisions at sea.
- There could be a technical or human factor either, but again – if it is Filipino who does not properly greased some mechanical parts in engine room, and then (for example) the rudder stuck and the situation lead to collision, where on same bridge (or opposite) is either Filipino guy who start simply to pray – it is so, it’s funnily, but many of them do so or do nothing - then we can see the result in this video.
Yes, they are cheaper a little bit than other seamen’s, but does it cost the environment? The oil what contaminate the beaches? The chemicals where in we swim at sea?
- then there is another big problem – it is “Filipino monkeys” not all of them, but the biggest part definitely. If we want to save planet from big pollutions and loses of lives we have to change the situation in right direction. Poor qualified personnel must not be allowed on vessels bridge, nor engine room, nor deck. It should be stopped that many navigators may navigate the vessel with a bought diplomas at Filipinas local market. This is big “sleeping” ecological bomb for the environment.
- Its now a usual practice if navigator has not slept for 3 days in port operations (especially on tankers), sometimes it’s a luck to sleep 3-5 hours during 2-3 day stay in port. And now is the question – how such a person - navigator or captain may navigate vessel safely!
- Crew now are pressurized to work a lot of overtime job. The job is the same (even more time consuming) as before 10-20 years ago with ~30 persons of crew, and nowadays 15-18 (including cook and mess boy), of course if the vessel has this personnel, many vessels trading in EU doesn’t has them!
First of all none of the vessels is at anchor! Secondarily there are many reasons why nowadays happen more and more collisions which could not to be occurred, if… there are many if….
- company would pay more attention to safety of navigation, not to make bigger economy, reducing crews on vessel, increasing paper job – often useless.

@maxwell308 Both boats were at fault. The boat that did the videoing should have been smart enough to stay out of the way. Clearly the blue one was more at fault. They were set up to go Red to Red ( port to port. ). But then turns to go Green Green ( Starboard Starboard ). Ive logged well over 10k mile from Washington to the Bering Sea and back over the past few years...and have not hit anything. Well expect for a whale that popped up in front of me.
reminds me of a story i heard of a Navy ship going all ape shit cause they were on a collision course with another ship. they got on the horn and starting yelling at this boat. yelling all about how important they are n shit. the "boat" said that they were not going to alter course. they yelled back and forth for a bit. finaly the "boat" says, "this is a light house, i am not changing course" doh
@BuffersYeoman ive been sailing/racing for 29 years. taught sailing for 7 at a pro sailing school in san diego. ive taught a lot of navy ppl how to sail, thats where i heard the story. i dont remember the details such as the name of ship.
All that OPEN water, Clear weather and these 2 Idiot Captians cant figure out how to avoid each other.

MrNavigator321 1 year ago
- Crew now are pressurized to work a lot of overtime job. The job is the same (even more time consuming) as before 10-20 years ago with ~30 persons of crew, and nowadays 15-18 (including cook and mess boy), of course if the vessel has this personnel, many vessels trading in EU doesn’t has them!
MrNavigator321 1 year ago
First of all none of the vessels is at anchor! Secondarily there are many reasons why nowadays happen more and more collisions which could not to be occurred, if… there are many if….
- company would pay more attention to safety of navigation, not to make bigger economy, reducing crews on vessel, increasing paper job – often useless.

Catholic faith is true.Read Fr Corapi, John Paul II Theology of The Body. God is Creator of all universe. BUT God is also our Saviour.Very important difference! He created us without asking us, BUT He wants to ask everybody:"Do you want me to take you to Heaven?".The point is you must give an answer, you can't avoid to give the answer. Your freedom is to make the choice:Yes or No.In moment of your death you will have to make your mind for eternity.Doitnow! Now No abortion.NowNoHell.Usereason,faith

The ship with the camera was the stand on vessel right?
maxwell308 1 year ago
@maxwell308 Both boats were at fault. The boat that did the videoing should have been smart enough to stay out of the way. Clearly the blue one was more at fault. They were set up to go Red to Red ( port to port. ). But then turns to go Green Green ( Starboard Starboard ). Ive logged well over 10k mile from Washington to the Bering Sea and back over the past few years...and have not hit anything. Well expect for a whale that popped up in front of me.

@ownTer The boat that was hit was anchored! Kind of tough to move when you're not moving!
