@bernardmvella yeah, some countries are known for faking the gymnasts ages, but on the other hand, those gymnasts are usually so small anyway that you just can be sure... it's like with deng linlin, I always thought that she looked kinda young, but it's been two years and at the 2010 world championships she looked exactly the same that at 2008 olympics...
I like that she doesn't come to a dead hang after her release skills the way some Chinese gymnats (*cough*He Kexin *cough*) do. And she makes her moves look effortless, rather than muscling through everything.
Inverted giants are very difficult to do. Even with the bars as far apart as they have ever been they are still very hard to pull off. Even if the women had only a highbar just like the men(which eventually i think will happen) they would still be one of the hardest skill done in gymnastics. I would know, i competed them in 1998-99 when i was an elite gymnast. I would have to keep them at the beg. on my routine because by the end i was out of gas and out of chalk. I didnt wear grips.
Oh that was so lovely: inverted giants were quite rare for women then, so her inverted giant into Jaegar was amazing!! The height was unreal; but she did catch it on bent arms. Still a wonderful routine; she was so beautiful. Although tiny, she actually had a womans figure:)
true she did have a women's figure but it looked like it was wasting away. Like she should have weighed about 15 more lbs. She missed some handstands but overall the routine was really dynamic and pretty.
Amazing! i guess judges didn't really care much about arches. Equally as amazing as Ma Yanhong and Nadia Comaneci! Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow,wow,wow,.....
her dismount looked very graceful. that reminds me of svetlana boginskaya's dismount in the 1988 Olympics, they've got a very similar pose, just like an angel.
She went up before. Watch Silivas's routine and after she dismounts you can see Fan Di waiting to see what her score is. She then goes up to Silivas and congratulates her (or they congratulate each other since they both tied for gold) with a kiss.
I remember in the original ESPN broadcast they showed Fan Di's routine along with a few others. Christy Henrich's routine was shown then she was followed by Silivas.
Audie-don't respond to people who attack you. It's not worth it. Just ignore them. You have a right to your opinions-just as everyone here has been voicing them. Anyone who takes someones opinion on an event that occurred 20 years ago so very personally and gets so angry that they resort to hurling insults at them in really needs to do some deep soul-searching. I am sure Fan Di and Daniela Silivas are very happy with what medals they won-and have gone on with their lives.
You should not take people's remarks so personally. It's childish to attack another user hurling insults at them just because you don't like what they say-your doing so only makes you seem hypocritical and very rude also. Your attack against audie really was uncalled for.
Shannon Miller was like 68 pounds...that would be a pretty sick hippo. No elite gymnast could be called a hippo, they are much smaller than average people usually, even the gymnasts that are big for the sport. Fan Di was awesome though, love her.
Now that you point them out-I guess it's true. But compared to other routines like Strazheva's which I think scored a 9.95-her 10.00 was worthy. The judges scored everyone too high anyway.

She's got great skills. You should check up the Chinese and Korean gymnasts, they're so tiny and flexible, that's why they easily achieve great skills that others work hard for during months of training. Check up Kim Gwang Suk, Mo Huilan, Yang Yun, Luo Li...they're tiny and this is a huge advantage. Compared to hippos like Elise Ray, Shannon Miller, Dominique Dawes and Kupets, they're porcelain dolls. So that's why the judges 'have so many 10 to give away' when it comes to them.
First of all don't call them hippos when maybe ur one. Dominique Dawes is not a hippo neither is Elise Ray or Shannon Miller. Are u a gymnast if not them back off
Why do you care, are YOU a gymnast? Or shall I say, if i'm not a gymnast then I don't have the fundamental right to express myself freely?? That's my opinion. Compare Elise Ray's routine at Sydney with this one.The conclusions are all yours.
But, do your kno how hard it is to keep your femine figure when you work 6 to 10 hours a day.And yes i am a gymnast! So sorry if offended you in any way
Um, when Shannon Miller competed at her prime, which was only a few years after this, she was less than 70 lbs. That's not really all that hippo-ish, by any standard.
she is probably lighter tahn 90lbs anyways......i'd say that a heavy gymnast would be around 120lbs...for elites anyays, but definetly not hippos, and definaly not for the 90 and 100lbs.
Perhaps Hippo wasnt the best choice of words, but it annoys me that people think you mean 'fat' when you point out that American gymnasts have traditionally been the biggest gymnasts. It does not mean fat, but they are indeed heavier then the other nations consistently. AGAIN - THIS DOES NOT MEAN FAT OR UNFIT OR GROSS, IT SIMPLY MEANS NOT AS TINY AS OTHERS.
I don't think that people taking the word "hippo" to mean fat is unjustified. You don't really have the right to be annoyed by their interpretation of a word that you simultaneously acknowledge to be out of line. You're right American gymnasts are usually heavier, but they're also taller, and it does average out. Besides, you're really only considering the big gymnastics powers, such as the US, China, and the former Soviet nations--who, to note, have gymnasts comparable in size to the US.
Hardly worthy of a 10.00??? True the judges gave out too many 10.00's in the day but this was spectacular routine with no major mistakes. You say 'hardly' as if Fan Di bombed all over the place.
True - when I said that I didn't like her dismount, it's just that move has never been aesthetically appealing to me. I wasn't commenting on her level of skill or performance.
I see-I'm sorry I misunderstood. Actually speaking of dismounts-one of my all time favorites is the Ma Yanhong hecht off the top bar-it'd be cool if someone threw that again. There were so many 'Nadia' dismounts, then so many 'double backs' or full twists. It'd be refreshing to see something different.
yes , she shared the gold medal with silivas because she scored a ten after her (if u wanna c it visit my channel) but i don't think she went on the olympics i'm not sure
why wasn't she deducted for her underpants showing?
