Jeff, I am a Diesel Generator Technician. I'm looking to build my own system for generating power. Question: Instead of having a wind turbine driving a 12 VDC generator, is it possible to drive a 10-50kW 240 VAC alternator? I understand that wind speeds are NOT steady so getting 60Hz (1800RPM) is a problem. Are there ways to overcome this problem?? (maybe by using an induction generator and "locking" it in phase with utility power)?? Any thoughts?
@troybrownrigg You do the same as any kind of tower. Just pound a steel rod into the ground and attach a copper #8 bare wire via a lug to it. If your lucky then the tower and turbine take the hit and if your disconnect is fused your inside equipment survives.
Why not kick up the voltage at the box on the pole and utilize much thinner wire? Then once inside kick it down to 12 or 24volt (whatever you need) making it a bit more easy to manage wire and cost wise.
My light bill says I use an average of 24-48 KWH/day. How many turbines and what wattage should I run to achieve that? What would the cost be ball park?
hey depravedepuma If you have somehing bad to say , keep it to yourself! Jeff is a smart man!!! he knows his Stuff! I am a A&P Mechanic if you know what that is and in the industry Turbine is pronounced "turban" whtaever he says you know what the heck he is talking about!!!
Anyway Jeff! I live in DE close to Dover right now we are getting 40Mph winds normal is 4 to 10 MPH. I want to get a starter kit wind turbine but need to build the tower first.. Where do i get the locking collars?
@oitseric thanks oitseric,i get tired of these idiots that take the time to correct your spelling like it really matters.anyway i sell the locking collars on my web site missouriwindandsolar , i don't know of anybody else that sells them.
how high up does the tower have to be before the blades start turning? You can hear the wind at ground level but the blades aren't turning at 18 feet in the air? why?
thanks for your up load i sorta figured it out. i posted before i asked for my dad's help. i just have one question. how does this thing get tied into a house? i don't think ive seen a video about that yet. if you do have one can you tell me which one?
My wind turbine is similar but my tower is20' of 2" pipe free standing,no guy wires. The footer is 4' deep 2'x2' wide there are 2 pressure treated 4"x4"s set 3' into the concrete that stick up about 4' the pipe is bolted between them, the bolts are about 3' apart and if I remove one I can tilt the tower down. I seems to be a pretty sturdy set up It hasn't blown down,,,,,,,,,,Yet.
Cool setup man. I like the busbars you used. That would keep things organized if you added another turbine like you mentioned. My setup is pretty ghetto... wires everywhere :(
yes it works just fine.i drill a small indent for the set screw to sit in and it does not move.i have been using these lock collars for my guy wires for 2 years,no problems.
I suspect that the shaft collar for the guy wire hub is not intended to take the kind of forces that can develop with three guy wires pulling downward. It appears like you have three cables pulling down on one set screw. Just a thought.
Your really underestimating that lock collar idea. The collar is way more than enough for what he's using it for. Now the top ring the guide wire is on looks questionable.
to irldave.you only need to run the positive cable inside the pipe, your negative can be connected at the base.
weld cable is made to take alot of twisting and is designed for dc power.the wire doesn't twist up and if it does it usually will unwind itself.weve been using it for years and it beats slip rings which are exspensive and break down, especially if they get frozen, the turbine tries to turn and the carbon brushes break,we keep it simple.

@fuckityouwin I have the same tower setup and i have no shield on it, works fine.He said it was about 30 foot from the building.

At first I had had to say to myself "Why is the turbine camouflaged?" But after watching I have to say I kinda dig it! Great video and thanks!
frank2398 9 months ago
@fuckityouwin No i do not. It will not short out. Rain is a bad conducter of electricity anyway. 12 volt 500, yes.
It's about 40 feet to the building with nimber 4 welding cable.

What happens when there hit by lightning? Or what precautions are taken to prevent that damage

question? i need to buy a wind tower
do you have this? Standard SCH40 2" steel pipe
for my wind turbine pipe or you have any idea have to conecte? with differente pipe?
thanks hope you can help me
gracias!

@kricotas no i do not sell towers. you use a reducer to change the pipe size.

Jeff,
If you put two turbines on a tower, could you use the bus bars to combine the power before bringing it into the house?
Thanks for these great videos.

hey Jeff, what keeps the cable from eventually getting all twisted up?
DD826 1 year ago
@DD826 welding cable is used and it's meant to twist with no problems.
seldom does the wind come from more than 2 directions.it will unwind itself.

the wind turbine is shorted out so we can do the video.when your up close you don't want the raptor blades to start up.
20' is a minimum height for towers, the higher the better.

yes i ship to ireland
jeffmolly1 2 years ago
I must be missing something here! How come the positive and negative lines running down the inside of the pole don't get tangled up?
Or am I just being negative??
Oh will you ship to Ireland?

the wind turbine is a missouri low wind 500 watt.the lock collar helps the turbine to track better
