I do come from the Faroe Islands, and I can tell you that this is not nearly as barbaric than a chickhen, or a pig farm. This goes very quick, nearly all the meat of the whale is eaten.

If there is excess saved in a depot every year, it would accumulate more and more every year due to decreased consumption. You should not kill for tradition, and all animal killing should be humane and as stress free as possible, which this blatently isn't. How anyone could consider this fine is beyond me to be honest. @lornatherecker28 The pilot whales are first driven ashore where they potentially can be suffering for approximately 20 minutes. A blowhole is then placed into their blowhole and they're then hauled to lower water which causes no damage. Their spinal cord is then sliced which causes instant paralysis and death after approximately 30 seconds. The whales are unconcious at this moment but you can see some whales have spasms at this moment.

Animals like pigs and cows if kept correctly in a non intensive environment with a decent amount of space and enrichment live stress free lives. You won't escape stress in farming, there's no chance. But comparing that to the whaling, the whaling is neither painless nor are the whales stressed for long, only in 20 minutes approximately. I think by looking at those comparisons, livestock is worse than pilot whaling.

You seem to not understand. Farming is about intensity, about the money. Perhaps some farmers treat their animals well, but seem to be the inferior part.
You can't deny facts about the blowhole hook. There are socalled air sacs in the blowhole in which the blowhole hook is placed.
The meat of the whales does not go to waste. The meat is shared to the participants and to those who were unable to participate as for instance the elderly.
As said, there's not proof that dolphins really are smart, and the fact that someone (with the same reliability) claims the opposite makes me don't rely on all these statements till a plain conclusion is found.

Its really hard to watch this. A lot of people do this "because it has been in their culture for number of years" well I think it is horrible that in those many years certain cultures have made no advancements. But this really can't be comparable to farmed animals or hunting (i need to search more on this hunting bit) When you hunt an animal, you do it in seasons so the female isnt carrying or still supporting its baby. And thats not really practiced here at all. Another thing is that there is so much meat going to waste because you cant simply eat all of that with the mercury content.

Whales have names for their relatives like humans and probably are well conscious about the slaughter. Still I'm not here to condemn that community as this is a very old tradition of theirs.

You should not kill for tradition, and all animal killing should be humane and as stress free as possible, which this blatently isn't. How anyone could consider this fine is beyond me to be honest. A disgusting tradition in my country is fox and stag hunting, which to me is nothing short of shamefull and anyone involved in any pointless traditions should be disgusted. If you need to survive off the pilot whales kill them humanely or not at all! Get some respect for nature!

@lornatherecker28 The pilot whales are first driven ashore where they potentially can be suffering for approximately 20 minutes. A blowhole is then placed into their blowhole and they're then hauled to lower water which causes no damage. Their spinal cord is then sliced which causes instant paralysis and death after approximately 30 seconds. The whales are unconcious at this moment but you can see some whales have spasms at this moment.

You won't escape stress in farming, there's no chance. But comparing that to the whaling, the whaling is neither painless nor are the whales stressed for long, only in 20 minutes approximately. I think by looking at those comparisons, livestock is worse than pilot whaling.

Farming can cause stress and can be inhumane if farmed Intensively, which is what you have described and is appauling and is obviously worse than the grind. There are videos of the underwater decaying pilot whales, just look on sea shepherds website.

The meat of the whales does not go to waste. The meat is shared to the participants and to those who were unable to participate as for instance the elderly.
As said, there's not proof that dolphins really are smart, and the fact that someone (with the same reliability) claims the opposite makes me don't rely on all these statements till a plain conclusion is found.

When the pilot whales are hauled to lower water, their spinal cords are cut causing instant paralysis. They are unconcious until they die after 30 seconds.
All the whales are eaten, nothing goes to waste. There does not exist any graveyard of whales here.

I honestly cant watch this because my stomach cant handle it. Ive been doing some reading and will be doing more. But this really can't be comparable to farmed animals or hunting (i need to search more on this hunting bit) When you hunt an animal, you do it in seasons so the female isnt carrying or still supporting its baby. And thats not really practiced here at all. Another thing is that there is so much meat going to waste because you cant simply eat all of that with the mercury content.

It would be one thing if they really needed the meat to survive, but the Faroese are a wealthy people who enjoy a very high standard of living, so their brutal killing is really just bloodlust that they wrap in the excuses of "culture" and "history."
I hope that one day they can find it in their hearts to stop this barbaric practice.......

Those are just not efficient or humane kills. They should just round them up near the beach like they do and take clean head shots with high-powered rifles. Sticking them with hooks or what have you obviously creates a lot of unecessary suffering. Anyone, is the meat good? Anyone know?
