poor bus... I cringe at the john deer factor though
the company I work for as fleet manager- we got one in 2003/2004 as a test. We happened to like it, so we ordered another for myself. Mercedes engine, fully loaded as far as options, and 72 passenger with extended leg room(84 passenger length). That puppy MOVEEDD when I wanted her too. Engine gave us some problems so we orders 5 more the next year with the CAT equivalent. Never had one complaint from the drivers of them. I just hate the mirrors
@allergictoyurmomm yes, john deeres scare people ad it did break down a lot for being a brand new bus.. but all of the new 40ft buses they buy have been cng-even a new bus barn with overnight cng charging terminals...
@bitsyray I'd rather have the MBE and deal with it's issues than a JD. Either way I'll stick to my CAT. Both buses I've had with the CAT has never given me any issues. And I can pretty hard on the motor at times.
@allergictoyurmomm this one gets run up and down a 25 mile 4500ft grade twice a day.. that's hard work.. not defending it. MB engines are nice, and i believe that's whats in some of the smaller freightliner buses.
all i know is that the cng did not like the altitude change..
@bitsyray yeah the Thomas C2(freightliner) run a MBE stock. Which is what the test HDX we got had in it. Just to risky after the amount of problems we had with it in one school year. So we opt'd for the CATs. Still the MBE ran great that we had.
@bitsyray not sure I ever driven a cummins to be honest.
When I started I was driving a 72 passenger 1999 MVP with a huge CAT. Loved that motor and bus. IT MOVED!!! Then it was taken out to be sub bus for it's remaining 6 years. So I asked for the full loaded 84 passenger, 2005 All American RE. I THINK this was a cummins... but it was the stock motor. So being as big as it was and having all options it had no pull to it. Can't knock the engine on that one though.
@bitsyray I don't wanna pass judgement till I drive a balanced motor with a balanced bus. After telling the boss I no longer wanted his bus(the AA RE was HIS bus but he was stuck in the office so it wasn't being driven) I asked for the fully optioned(except AC) IC RE300 we just got from a company we bought out. Think it had a MaxxForce DT. Motor did well with the bus and had fair pull too it. But when it got hot and humid here the no A/C was not cute.
@bitsyray So when our first HDX came in that we ordered as a test I quickly snatched it up. It was 72 passenger, fairly optioned.(no under cargo storage and some other minor driver options like radio and small stuff). The MBE in that did wonders as far as pull. But she was down for a week+ more than 3 times in one school year. So we order 5 more the next year. Fully optioned, 77 passenger with extended leg room(84 passenger length) but with the CAT equivalent of the MBE. Does WONDERS!
@allergictoyurmomm mmm extender leg room sounds nice... an hour and abhalf each way was no fun in high school.. the other thing I will add to this conversation is Crown. Those things are bulletproof rode in one from 4th-8th grade and will neverr forget it.I was always the kid in the front seat bs'n with the driver. So I was loved by every driver that had our route. It was fun knowing about what was going on if a bus was down. One more thin I wont forget is the screaming Detroit in the carpenders
@bitsyray yeahhhh. sounds like me. when I was in high school. ride there= chatting with bus driver. ride home= same thing. I knew everything about every bus, every company. gossip and all. My bus driver was the company owner. Bus my sophomore year she got sick and was out for almost 6 months due to extensive surgery to remove a mass they found while doing her scan for her knee replacement. So I made good friends with the sub bus driver.(who worked for another company- the one I work for now)
@allergictoyurmomm senior year my regular driver was gone for a month due tohealth problems. The gossip was always great since I rode the longest route(mile wise) it was always funny to see the newer drivers drive in the snow.like in the vid, that error pulling in to the stop was by a driver being trained by the reg one. It was the reg driver that got the bus free. Yeah we had a loop, not as long as yours, but I would ride it. Since we were so far from the school, we had an extra rout
@bitsyray yeah I started when I was 18. My CDL was my birthday gift pretty much. yeah usual routes here consist of one high(9-12), one middle(6-8), and one elementary(1-5) route.(dunno how grades are broke down there so thought I'd put all that in. Anyways- Not ALL middle and elementary schools get out at the same time. So some drivers end up with two middles or two elementarys. Sometimes two of both. But my high school gets out at 2:15 and rolls out at 2:20 and I finish my last stop around 4:30
@bitsyray By 4:30 I mean all four of my routes- not just my high school. I drive the high school route i had when I was in school. and the two middles and elementary school I have are the same three my sub had. I got them when she quite to go full time on coach buses. I basically get to the next school with a minute or two before the bell rings- Except the elementary school I have about 30-45 minutes of lay over time- depending of if I stop for a drink and food somewhere along the way.
@allergictoyurmomm That left the school at 5pm, for activities people. It was always fun to rode since it was dark during winter. Also we had a good time since it was people who cared enough about school to take extracurriculars. Once in a while at night we would stop at a gas station to get food because there is nothing near or at the school to eat at that time..one time we got someone who had just graduated and got his certs. He just turned 19 a week before he started the night route.
@bitsyray so when my regular bus driver returned I rode with her in the morning. and the sub we had in the evening.(her route ended around the corner from where my began, I was first stop so she was at the same school) And I would ride her entire route in the afternoon to all 5 schools. And me, the sub, and my normal driver would all gossip and chat for 45 minutes at the one elementary school they both had a route at.
@bitsyray Also made good friends with the boss of my sub's company. When I got hired it was like I had already been working there for three years. But yeah alot of our buses are 84 passenger. or 72 passenger with extended leg room. That way, people like me, get a full length bus but still get the leisure of have comfortable seating/leg room for whoever is riding the bus.(high school students and adults in particular)
Also never driven a Crown or Carpenter. nor do we own any. So cant say a thing
@allergictoyurmomm the mirriors, the factory claims there a safety feature, i dont know if you have ever noticed, but while driving a safe-t-linner, you never have to move your head to see out of the mirrors, because of the way there set on the bus.
yeah, This district is getting state money for having some CNG buses. actually, since '05 all of the 40ft and half buses have been CNG powered. Also because of this, new bus barn has been made, and there are over-night refueling stations for each of them. on the diesel side of this its still green since the district also decommissions all buses that are 20 years old.(maybe when all are CNG they will keep them longer). But yeah, Hemet Unified School District is known for this act of green.
yes.. well.. Monday this bus was stuck again.. but at a different stop... but this time it was for over 4 hours..drop chains don't work in reverse, and that's it's weakness.
Wow! I drive a 2007 saf t liner hdx 78 passenger and when it does snow my boss makes me put tire chains on my front and beck tires. And I never get stuck
well there is a bus going to a k-8 school on the mntn.. they get that 1988 crown. it has drop chains plus they put regular chains on it.the bus i take(as shown stuck)travels off the mountain so they don't put the regular chains since there is a 4000ft elevation change between this stop and the school.anyways this driver is skilled in taking snow and mountain conditions but this was the first time i have ever seen her stuck like this, she managed to get it out later by rocking it back and forth.
I take that bus :)) the other day it got stuck at pine cove :)) so my friends didnt have to got to school! lucky bastards!!!!
