Sorry but for me this is the worst so-called soul track ever, reminds me of the muppets band and Animal is actually my hero! I would destroy every copy if I had the chance.
this is the version I like most (having heard some of them) of this song! A friend of mine used to dj this many nights in Madrid-Spain a long time ago.
I really do not understand the Northern Soul obsession of taking a wonderful classic 60's Mod record ( Chris Montez' s 'Call Me' in this case) and claiming that a lesser known (i.e. because its nowhere near as good) instrumental version , or worse still, REMOVING THE VOCAL from the original track, makes it somehow 'better' because its 'RARER ' . If Rarity is the defining principle ,such people really should be standing at train stations, jotting down rare train numbers. The mind boggles.
"RARE" doesnt necessary mean "BETTER" or "WORSE"...it just means its harder to find a copy.
If something is lesser known, it doesnt mean it can't be as good. It just means it never made it at the time. Some of the best vocal tracks I have are on Acetates that never made it and are certainly lesser known.
Instr. versus vocal often depends on personal taste also.
However I dont disagree that some northern soul fans do go for rarity over quality !
A very respectable answer from RareMusicDirect. Many rarer records are gr8 eg Spooners Crowd '2 in The Morning' (which I got hold of recently Im Glad to say). I do find that the majority of Northern fans do favour rarity over qaulity tho cos they want to be in an underground scene away from the rest of the world and some even slag off almost ALL Motown records or any classic 60's Soul because its not rare or expensive to boast about owning. But ur right quality is key whether its rare or not.
@FantomRaspberyBlower I can only talk about the Northern Soul Scene in the seventies and personaly It is well passed it's sell-by date and is only a nostalga scene. But in the seventies and eighties records where never just picked for their rarity. They were picked for having the right sound and feel. You can't put it into words it's something you just know been a Northern fan. The Northern Soul Scene was one of the most complicated (musicaly) scenes ever to evolve.
If you got soul in your bones you know-you feel soul its not about rare

I made that 45, 45 yrs. ago! Never thought it would still be played. Intersting fact: the drummer became a famous movie and TV star.
Frankie Vincent ("Raging Bull", "The Sopranos"). I'm still giggin'

When i started playing this was one of the first things I learnt (nearly) and still play it.
