  • @1950jimbei I believe music is universal. Everyone deserves an honest opinion. The moment you believe that people who have less musical experience or talent deserve less of a say than those who are musically proficient, you lose music's universal appeal.

The people who were dissing Stanley for the "unique" notes were wrong to do so, but their opinion that those notes were unusual should be respected.

  • Wow! Real guitar heros!!!!!

  • кейф

  • that's not a wrong note at 3:02. He hits it twice and moves up.. what the hell is a wrong note anyway? you can play a chromatic scale to any song if you stay in time and rhythm

  • Watch Paul Mandell keeping a close eye on his sheet music throughout this. Looks like he might not have had much rehearsal time with these guys before the show! A fine guitarist, but lost in Chet's shadow for much of his career.

  • If he hit that note wrong at 3:02, he applied the rule still: If you play a wrong note, repeat it so they know you mean it!

  • What kind of guitar are they using? Brand? Model?

  • @franktib Jordan plays a Vigier Arpege guitar and Atkins play his Atkins signature Gretsch guitar.

  • @aquabot That's not a Gretsch, Chet was endorsing Gibson at the time. Look at the head stock and the pups and you can see it clearly

  • Stanley Jordan, Jazz Master. Chet EVERYTHING Master

  • So cool.

  • Very cool to watch. Thanks for posting.

  • The third guitarist is Mr. Paul Yandell. He worked with Jerry Reed and when Jerry stopped performing to do movies etc. he worked with Chet for 25 years. He has videos of his own here. Check them out. A great guitarist and a very nice guy.

  • wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow........u are so awesome for posting this

  • What can I say? God has me with ears blessed! I hear this songs...

  • i'm 14, and I love chet atkin's music :)

  • Pure magic.

  • Stanley Jordan with a pioneer of modern guitar-Chet Atkins. RIP Mr Chet Atkins we miss you deeply.

  • Ah, the elegance of Chet.

  • Wow ........... need I say more ?

  • bufffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff amazing

  • What a marvelous video. Ahh Chet I still miss ya RIP dear.

  • A Timeless classic beautifully done by Chet and Stanley. This version just flat mellows me out .

  • Great lesson in how to perform with others. Both humility and class from both of them.

  • @ConspireToConspire You are so right.

  • nobody plays like stanley jordan. after all theses years nobody has quite figured out his technique.

  • Hoagy Charmichael's masterpiece, played by two giants who would seem to have nothing in common...

...except the desire to help each other make the most profound music possible.

  • @leafsfourever Rudeness gets you little in life. Chet was fully capable of keeping time by listening. Musicians usually cue by looking at faces, not hands. Maybe looking at some more of his video will help you see that.

  • Stanley Jordan is still making music. His latest album, State of Nature, has some absolutely astounding songs on it.

  • If you watch Chet in any of the videos where he's playing with someone else, he is always really focused on what the other person is doing. I taught myself how to play guitar in the late 50s listening to Chet Atkins and Lonnie Mack. To great ones for sure.

  • What is Chris Rock doing playing guitar with Chet Atkins?

  • SOME EPIC MELODY AT 2:10

  • Wow, amazing technique. Unfortunately he makes the guitar sound like crap. This is why after the novelty wore off, Stanley disappeared. He is incredibly accomplished but if wanted to play a percussion instrument he should have stuck with a real piano. It would sound better than the tinny toy piano sounds he's making here.

I know that many here will hate me for saying so but many guitarist will agree with me. One of them is likely the guitar god that is playing beside him.

  • This was awesome.... Except for the synth strings.... If you got 3 guitarists and a bass player, do you really need a guy plunking out chords on all down beats on a synthesizer??

  • I have to agree with both of you on that point! A legend with a track record to prove it!

  • Arguably the greatest pop song ever written, played by supreme masters. Ahhhhhhh!

  • Wonderfull Musicians !!

    I like them.

  • the music they used i porn in the 90s

  • I agree with planetalk. Jordan was disappointing here. He was meandering. There was no unity to his solo. Atkins was always on-point. One note sets up the next few.

  • wonder if Chet ever tried tapping before..Ive seen him do artificial harmonics.

  • wonderfulllllllllllllllll.............

  • So melodious. Just beautiful.

  • very special! we can all get along and make beautiful music together..thanks for posting!

  • whats chet using here

  • bill murray's better than this

  • Remember what the first 4 letters are in "analyze"... especially "Over-analyzing"..... this was beautiful on both of their parts. I think all the notes had nice resolution.

  • Sometimes I get the feeling that Jordan's too humble. The public looses sight of what a groundbreaking innovater he really is. I saw him on TV one night with Lyle Mays (aon accordian!), and he let Mays take all the solos.

  • re: Stanley Jordan altered tone at 3:02--It's interesting to note that in his early days Chet Atkins himself was canned from jobs for playing unconventionally!

  • It's amazing that two guitarists of this level could play together without making it a competition.

  • one of the few players i bet chet was nervous to match up to!

  • Is this on video or DVD?

  • What's all the hubub about? Stanley's notes at 3:02 were purposeful accidentals that fit perfectly. Like seriously, you can't diss Stanley. He frickin plays the guitar like a piano. Chet, as always, was simply magnificent.

  • @acuity67 ... He got away with that one -- almost -- but not the one at 2:52. Over the Dm he's playing a flat five (ugh) then he uses that note (G#) again over the next chord, A7, so major seven against the flat seven (ugh). This is what happens when you're in a scale mindset instead of chord mindset. Great player, not so hot improviser.

  • @planetalk RIGHT?!

  • @planetalk RIGHT?! I CAUGHT ALL THAT!

  • @planetalk a flat 5th on II chord gives it a darker characteristic, more like the II of a minor key rather than a major key. Its quite common in jazz actually. the same G# played in the A7 functions as an approach note. You can't be serious, accusing one of the greatest jazz musicians in history of playing a wrong note in the key of C? I think this video is pure magic.

  • @joetatan ... sorry. joetan. I Didn't mean to offend. The actual names and functions of the notes don't really matter. I was just let down -- melodically -- at that point in the tune. Stanley set me up for something that, to my ears, went astray, that's all.

  • What's all the hubub about? Stanley's notes at 3:02 were purposeful accidentals that fit perfectly. Like seriously, you can't diss Stanley. He frickin plays the guitar like a piano. Chet, as always, was simply magnificent.

  • Did you guys know this is a love song about drugs? Chet started performing this after be discharged from rehab.

  • certainly a song of lost love, but of drugs? Not so sure myself.

  • @Wilfslad Was just making a joke. Great song though.

  • Stanley played 3 notes that were 100% out of key and they weren't the "good" outside thing either. Maybe he should go back to using only one hand to fret notes like Chet LMAO!

  • Even if his 3 notes around 3:02 may sound strange to you, why should he go back to the conventional way? Show your reason.

Stanley's style was undoubtedly approved of and admired by Chet and many other great musicians, and doesn't need approval by an amateur like you.

You can say you don't like his style but can't say what he should or shouldn't do, because he is immeasurably superior to you.

  • @1950jimbei nice comment dude, very true. Beautiful music that's basically it here folks

  • @1950jimbei if i could double vote this up i would ;)

  • @musichopper ... I'm with you, musichopper. He seemed a little lost in that improv, didn't he? You really do need to track the chords in this tune to keep any melodic phrases on the money.

  • The day Finger pickers took over the world

  • Beautiful music in that CD...!!

Tommy Emmanuel... maniac guitar player, great personality definitely one of the guys on the top of the musicians food chain u_u

Chet.. practically the same but before Tommy ^^

  • Funny, Mr. Acoustic Finger-picker with Mr. Electric Tapper.

  • Splendid duet. So tasteful and Chet's '60's arrangement is perfect. As he always did, Chet provides the perfect background to SJ's solo. Paul Yandell's rhythm and harmony were A++ on this cut.

  • Very very nice...cudo's to the amazing backup band........

  • Stanley Jordan and Chet Atkins awesome combo!!

  • We're not worthy! We're not worthy!

  • Speak for yourself.

  • Doesn't work well for me. Chet's a much better picker rather than soloist. this is a bit boring to be honest, and I speak as a big Chet fan. It's like lift music

  • boring? sounds soothing to me

  • Oh, man. If I could only listen to two guitarists for the rest of my life, it would be Chet and Django; and don't you dare try to make me choose, because I couldn't. Even though they have spawned two closely-related schools of guitar players, teeming with many technical virtuosos, Chet and Django maek me smile BIG every time I give a listen.

  • sick playing by chet atkins

  • Chet has little birds in your fingers! He was the best!Love for ever in your music!"

  • Chet!! I love you!!! You are the best! Always Remember

  • great!!!

  • Lord I love this vid....thanks for posting it!

  • Really great combination these two guys. I'm embarassed to say I never heard of Stanley Gordon but what an amazing technique. I've played for almost 60 years and I love youtube cuz I learn new shit every time I get lost here.

  • check out Stanley Jordan's version of stairway to heaven!

  • what an honor it must have been for Stanley Jordon to perform with Chet Atkins. Chet was a very good jazz guitarist. You'll have to look hard to find his early straight ahead jazz. One album, Progressive Pickin' is pretty cool.

  • my two favorite guitarist!!!

  • Wonderful

  • It's obvious! The difference between a country gitar player and a Jazz gitar player. Both Giants in their own way. Nice combination.

  • What can you say? Two masters at work.

It's interesting to see Chet taking a close look at Jordan's technique.

  • @jmichaelm0 The great thig about Chet was that he never thought he knew it all. He always appreciated new talent and encouraged it to shine .

  • Comment removed

  • Mr. Adkins was always a teacher and a student until the end.

  • how does stanley get such great tone while doing that?

  • Part of it is because he files his frets down extremely low.

On his instructional DVD he shows the difference between a guitar with and without filed frets and basically the filed frets make it brighter sounding, it sustains longer and you don't get so much "popping" noise or muted notes.

  • @trevorm1 I think the strings are dampened, and of course, electronics.

  • @trevorm1 nvm, TimjMorrison knows better....haha

  • That's just amazing stuff.

  • Two guitar greats, one stage, sweet.

  • Three guitar greats, don't forget Paul Yandell

  • Chet's tone is to die for...

  • Lovely 90s. :)

  • That Db at 302 is pretty out there.

  • God Blesssssss America. We will survive.

  • Not a fan of Atkins' Gibson guitar. Would love to hear the same on his old Gretsch '59

  • This guy could have strung rubberbands over an apple crate and made magic happen. Never be anyone like Chester B

  • @TEXASSURFDONKEY Yes he could play any genre that was actually music and look right at home. As long as it wasn't rap or hip hop I don't think he would have considered them music although I'm sure I will have someone that will want to argue me down on that.

  • @TEXASSURFDONKEY - and that goes for the both of'em!

  • It is best when guitarists of different styles play together. It makes things much more interesting.

  • What the hell video/show is this from?!?

  • damn jordan you badd badddd baddddd baddddd asssssss mutha fucka you ! ! ! chets aiight jordan is untouched unsurpassed by anyone, i mean God decided to play guitar hence we have stanley jordan . thank you God

  • though i do understand you jax we would have to agree to disagree on that one friend, i mean that what you speak of would be a matter of preference more so than his so called lack of emotion when playing as it is a noted fact that this man when playing any of the many various instruments he plays oozes with emotion and copples it with technique and diversity abroad, i mean, i will go with you all the way on those oter choices, as they are all great, however this man is by far untouchable. . .

  • personal preference of course.. absolutely

  • we should learn from the artists that so obviously respect one another

  • Man do you have that RIGHT!!!

  • A great old classic, and Chet makes it so beautiful!!!

  • The three of them together is magic. All great players in their own right.
