they could have just dissolved sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) in hydrochloric acid (HCl) and boiled it down but god damn i wish we could have pure sodium at school
The man who did this was Theodore Gray. I have the article in my popular science magazine. "No one was hurt because I'd made safety preparations for even the worst-case scenario, which this nearly was--only an uncontrolled chlorine leak would have been worse, in which case I had a clear path to run like hell."
The reaction was Chlorine mixed with Sodium. The smoke you saw was salt. Can't you guess it? They were salting their popcorn! Obviously it didn't work out well. Ah, what those guys do in the name of science...
No, that is not thermite. Thermite uses aluminum metal which is oxidized by iron oxide (rust) to produce high levels of heat. This reaction is between sodium and chlorine gas to produce Sodium Chloride, NaCl, (table salt). The flame and heat here are a result of the reaction.
Just some brainless redox reaction, pointless purpose. They should have said "We want to impress you guys with some explosions, but since we've done too many explosions that bored many of you.... I"ll do a twist with popcorn this time.... with a burnable net (real smart) and popcorn held just few centimeters above the flame." Very... very brilliant (if u catch my tone).
My mom would be so upset at me if I burnt up popcorn like that in my house. She hates it when the smoke alarms go off needlessly. I bet your mom was mad at you too.
you retard that wasn't popcorn!! and the guys were professionals... if you had actually watched the video you would have noticed that it is by pop sci, and they definitely know what they are doing...their "mom" would not care.
"Seconds after this picture was taken, the net melted, dropping ** popcorn ** into the bowl and sending a shower of flaming liquid sodium balls in all directions" Who's the retard now?
Theres the normal way and then theres the science way :)

2Na + 2H2O = 2NaOH + H2
NaOH + HCl = NaCl + H2O

they tried to salt their popcorn by holding it above a sodium and chlorine reaction the smoke you see is salt dust....

I would say that was Thermite that was the flame. It's 1200-2000 degrees celcius (Hot, you loser).
