I've used sonar for a while and unless they've done something pretty radical with the x1 version I ain't buying cause the previous ones, namely the sonar 6 which I had is a bummer. There's so many things in it it would take you like a million years to learn. Also it's not user friendly, intuitive. It's for hardcore, detail following freaks who want to lose more time on dealing with a program than making music. However I don't doubt it has hidden gems but it didn't do it for me.
I have X1 Essential. Is there a way to control/play the soft synths included, like for instance the SI-String Section, with the regular PC-keyboard? And there is also another thing: Many of the built-in Audio FX's are missing, the Cakewalk effects in particular. I did however get an error notificaion during the installation of the software, I guess it probaly could have something to do with that. I have windows 7 32 bit by the way.
@unlyckystrike Mix craft five offers this it is cost effective in a market place that is unstable. You can use your key board to play as a midi device upload video and Cakewalks incredible VST line up syncs well so while you are learning about midi devices and this incredible DAW it is. Mixcraft can help teach u and is similar very similar to this DAW many may disagree but I am telling you the truth if you have any questions about this DAW or any email me. Great question!
@unlyckystrike I forgot to mention windows 7 32 and mixcraft 5.2 and pro are incredible I run vista and a 32 bit system and still can run unlimited tracks. For the 64 bit theme if you are not running a 64 bit system you can easily have someone help you install another processor go to a place like peddlar's mall for little to nothing you can add processors and ram without buying another system. The choice is up to you! PEACE Ronald L with Mixcraft...
@shrimpy342 I'm no expert, but I believe if Reason has a ReWire function, and if Sonar X1 supports it, you should be able to import it as a plugin, yeah.
@shrimpy342 I'm no expert, but I believe if Reason has a ReWire function, and if Sonar X1 supports it, you should be able to import it as a plugin, yeah.
@shrimpy342 Yes I have with countless daws and I own many versions of sonar including the one above. With some daws that are all about bits the majority of Native Instruments run at 24 bits... But Sonar as well as the VSTs made by cakewalk function at a 32 to 64 bit range.. So I think you are good to go. I am not seeing questions answered and I am skilled so I am here to help
can somebody help me? I am having weird problems with a Sonar 4 Producer Project 32 Bit opened in X1 64 and 32 Bit... crackling espacially in the bass etc ... does anybody know something about that? thank you so much!!
Tried it out yesterday at a friend's house. It's amazing. I was using it all night. Almost all the issues we used to have to put up with in past versions with the interface are gone from this version! The Browser and Inspector are worth the price of admission alone. I will say this: GET THE UPDATES!!! It improves Skylight be a LOT as not every single thing gets thrown into the Multidock.
I bought Sonar X1 Studio and I still didn't find out all what X1 is capable of, or the plugins it came with. The manual just addresses the basics but is there a detailed guide somewhere? I also have some VSTs but I don't know how to activate them in SOnar X1

I've been bouncing back and forth on DAW choices for ages, I initially wanted to get sonar but I heard it wasn't good. But I think my mind has been changed :)
i have a question can you upload mp3 to sonar and mix it with the song that you are making with or you can do that because i have lot song that i want to mix with to make my own song
Ive been looking to switch from fl studio to a more serious daw ( not dat ill forget all about fl though, nuh uh ) and sonar is like the one im mostly leaning towards .im scared cuz im soooooooooooooo comfortable wit fl studio ,should i get sonar or wat ? Dat one looks super kewl !
Pro Tools 9 with the Digidesign mbox2 or Sonar X1Producer with a serious interface. What do i spend my money on. Which one is better for a PC? Which one will work better with FL 9 rewired. Which has the better drum sequencer, Boom? Session Drummer 3? Can i drag my own drum samples into any of these drum sequencers? This is the debate thats goin on in my head, the questions i need answered. Any input would help.
@Autumn6 I guarrantee you it's the plugin you're using that's crashing your system....that or the sound device or a combo of the two. If Cakewalk were the culprit, it would crash whether you were laying down a drum pattern or not. And Cakewalk can do Sidechain on more than just Sonitus plugins.....it's just that WAVES hasn't incorporated that feature for Cakewalk with their own plugins. I'm assuming you're referring to WAVES....but this is a WAVES issue, not Cakewalk.
@CakewalkSoftware - I would consider returning to X1 once the SNAP problem is resolved. I hate that it has become 'Home Studio Plus', but I know I will get stuck with it because it is apparently replacing the previous versions.
Then again, I might consider your competition, even though I have been a Cakewalk user and fan since PA5. (PA 7 first registered user Cust#SM285 early 90's) ....
@CakewalkSoftware - Just so you know; I have reverted back to SONAR 8.5 .... And yes; some of the advancements in X1 are VERY nice ... The new 'PRO CHANNEL' stuff is wonderful .... and moving the edit functions to the top of the RHC menu should have been done long ago ...
But you dumbed down the GUI, and reduced the tools available during a session. We dont use every button, true, but every button removed creates LESS power .... We needed tools in SONAR arranged better ... Not eliminated
ALL the edit/copy/paste buttons are GONE ..... tools that I found to be the most useful are not available anymore .... Yeah; They are available in the 'Right Click Menu', but that is not as user friendly and takes longer.
Also ... What happened to the SNAP function ? .... Even when I have it set; I cannot get SNAP to move to the measure boundary even when measure is selected ... It uses the sample level pointer, which is difficult to locate on the measure .. It dont snap!
Why oh why did you do away with the traditional SONAR interface ? .... That GUI was developed from Pro Audio, of which I and a great many Cakewalk users were quite happy with. There are so many weaknesses in the X1 user interface .. It is hard to capture them all ...
What I can see is - Cakewalk decided to use what had been the SONAR HOME STUDIO GUI, and spruce it up as X1, instead of developing SONAR 9.0 - It is rather disappointing
@khadijah098 - They do have their own interfaces/control surfaces (have you visited their website ?) .... I would not necessarily recommend their stuff, but it is slightly more than average price for average hardware. You could be slightly better for slightly less, but the Cakewalk stuff is designed to work with their DAW products, and so you will get good support for it.
Wow ... So many questions an hardly any answers ... too bad ...
I do NOT work for Cakewalk, but I do have familiarity with it .. I will try to answer a few.
@NickSayle: Yes you can .... As long as you have a decent driver installed for the Alesis Multimix, then you can record simultaneously for all discrete-existent inputs. You can buy the product direct from Cakewalk's website ... But I prefer the SONAR VERSION 8.5, for reasons I will soon describe here.
I have just bought an Alesis Multimix 8 USB 2.0 It came bundled with Cubase LE4. Due to issues with the registration and lack of support from Steinberg I want to use a different DAW. I cut my teeth on CW Pro audio 9 and would prefer to stick the a Sonar product. All I need to do is simultaneously record up to 6 audio channels then mix and master down. What product from this range should I buy and where from in the UK.
@staviebeatproduction - No ... You do not need a Cakewalk controller to record a keyboard .... Even today's basic computers come with 24BIT 96KHz Stereo Audio inputs .... MIDI can be recorded using USB based MIDI keyboards that are relatively inexpensive.
@khadijah098 Yes you can use any microphone, but it must be plugged into some kind of audio interface. SONAR X1 Essential can record audio from any input source.
Can you or someone put a vid on to show how to use a midi file of a song from the net and change the sound using SONAR X1 Essential?? Im wanting to know if this can be done...
can you someone please show me using a midi track from the web how to change the sound using SONAR X1 Essential ?? im a solo enteratiner and wanting to know if this can be done..
@RedForSound Yea I run mac and pc and im always having problems with the pc..not very reliable when it comes to recording..my mac never fails..I always have driver isues and ect
@sludgefingers Hm... Because that`s is something that`s a bit important. I dislike the parametric eq a great deal so I prefer to have a graphic eq instead. Another thing that`s important is that the program includes good, usable reverb-effects. I don`t need many, I just need one that`s satifying. Same with the eq also.
@unlyckystrike I really think if you looked at it in more detail you'd be impressed. There are a range of graphic EQs (including linear EQ) within Sonar X1 Producer plus a wide range of reverbs including the Perfect Space convolution reverbs - every reverb type or parameter you could specify. This thing really covers all bases in terms of functionality.
I have been a long time sonar user. Since the original. I now have 8.5 along with the v-studio 100. Works great.. Thanks cakewalk for creating such a great DAW
@Whyrendog To be honest I havnt really looked at the includedsoftware that much. Looks like a watered down version of Sonar andsincei use sonar already I dont need it... But the v-studio sounds great.....
...that all depends on what your mother board will support. If your motherboard can support 32 GB RAM, then Sonar will use what it needs. I use 8 GB and have very few issues, but I also use a lot of 3rd party plug-ins.
What about the drum-features in the program? Can you use them in a normal music producing-project with for instance guitar, bass and vocals recorded manually as audio-tracks? I mean, can you export the project as wave or mp3 with the drums added into it or do I need some sort of midi-device in addition to this to actually hear the drums? And what about the EQ, are there just one type of EQ or are there others?
Can Sonar X1 edit audio properly? Does it have noise filters compressor/limiter etc? Because audio editing is still pretty poor. I always must work with another sw if I want a simple noise filtering.
Been a user since 7 producer and found it very easy to use but still producung great results. do not know why Sonar is not that popular in the UK. My only qualm with Cakewalk is the yearly upgrades. My studio is not making any money at present and the constant upgrades is really digging into my reserves. In saying that though, X1 producer is a must have. And that is no joke. I have worked with other DAWs and Sonar is keeping their own against the more popular names.
i dont know what one to get producers essentials or studio someone help me :s i really like the look of this but looking at the 3 available confuses me
Your going to get basically the same DAW no matter which of the 3 you buy. The difference is mostly in plugins and effects. Studio for example, doesn't come with Dimension Pro(which is a vst plugin synth). So basically, the more expensive version you get, the more plugins and effects you get. I hope that helps.
im going to try this one. i dont know why but i just feel that this software suites for me. i was using reason for half time and i was feeling constantanly what i have to delete it cause it just sucks .
I have to say this looks pretty impressive... I now use Reason/Record & Pro Tools most of the time but before that I always used my SONAR 6 Producer Edition. Perhaps I should upgrade it one day...
I have to say, this looks pretty impressive. I create most my music in the Record/Reason Duo & Pro Tools these days, but before that I relied on my SONAR 6 Producer Edition for everything. Perhaps it may be worth considering to upgrading SONAR at some point, the more sonic capabilities, the better!
to put i very simply this new version of Sonar has gotten Pro Tools by a great margin, i have outboard sound modules and out the box it is ready to go! The sound is super Fat ! and radio ready 8.5 or Sonar x-1 gives you this sound. You can be a clown a talk about industry standard or you can get with a company that light years ahead of its time making it happen and innovating in every upgrade now run tell that !
Bought studio8.5 in August, so I just missed the free upgrade to X1 :-(
Then tried everything I could image to buy the download upgrade from studio 8.5.
Took a whole day. No succes. The web store messed up registrations, could not find mine, although I typed the serial number etc, many times. 'Contact help desk' etc . No way. I already wasted one day with this.
I gave up. A pity that the development teams efforts is so great, but that the web store is so bad. I just want select-pay-download.
@produccionesmiranejo Yeah, if you bought 8.5 in November 2010 or later, you can upgrade to X1 for free. I bought 8.5 in August so I just missed it. I can't even buy the upgrade, because of bugs with their web store. So I now started look for alternatives.
ahhh hahah. i got for my birthday on september. It sucks for us.
But it is almost the same thing just different image. Well i dont know about producer because i own studio, but the new version of studio doesnt seem so good, has almost the same features. So i might wait and upgrade to x1 producer, its only $199 for cakewalk users that own sonar studio.
Propellerheads should team up with Cakewalk :P Who knows what they could create ahead in the future hehe just saying... Record looks quite similar if a bit different layout
would it work my AMD Phenom x3 8550 triple core processor ??? accord to the website it requires an AMD x4 quad core 9750 !!! so i;'m a bit worry to upgrade !!!
I've been using FL Studio for few years nov, simply because it was the quickest and easyest daw for me, although it lacked of few things. But this Sonar has the easyness of FL Studio and the power of the best daws in it, so i'll definately check it out and if it's as good as it seems, also buy it.
I've become a huge fan of Sonar and have used producer 7 for over a year getting the hang of it (bootlegged) and with this version I'm quite certain I'm ready to drop the cash. It's true this version of sonar seems very producer, not musician, oriented. But that's exactly what I need as both a musician and a producer. They are trying to compete with protools, not Logic. And the clutter isn't that bad, it's organized clutter. I have the biggest mess on my screen in any other daw with effects etc.
what about tools for MUSICIANS ! chord editor, voicing, chord grid, song parts, arrangement, score editor,... NOTHING ! It is a shame ! sonar is a tool for sound engineer and not for musicians. I think I won't upgrade to this version.
Sonar should make a better sheet music view for Sonar 9. It should be possible for every measure to have the same length. In most sheet music software, the measure that have more notes tense to be longer. This doesn't look pretty when it is printed.
The AudioSnap also need to be fix in Sonar 9. AudioSnap is good, but users can't hear the vocal results in realtime. Users have to bounce the track to hear the actual results.
Believe or not, my first experience with Sonar was a long time ago...Cakewalk 1.0.. MS-DOS.. Ooohh my God... I'm very old, I agree. But I love musical technology and really happy for this. Congratulations for all!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
too many colors looks like a toy ...and sonar has always been unstable with a million patches and updates i moved on to StudioOne S1 is like Logic meets Cubase and it never stutters crash or locks up on me and my CPU meter stays around 10% max with kontakt and nexus running wild CTFU nice try Cakewalk i will wait to see what the users say
I have 2 screen Monitors, I'm So 2010 and Nuendo 5 ;) Have fun with this copy cat GUI..Anyway let me not get antagonistic on this, its not fare for you guys..
Who cares what it sounds like when it looks this good? I would be just getting off all day twiddling virtual knobs and imagining I was in Muscle Shoals, back in the 70's. Beats PacMan hands down. Or maybe I might save my money and just fuckin' play my guitar.
Layouts nice, but still seems like it can get pretty cluttered for users with one monitor. I like the screen sets idea that lets you quickly switch your preferred layouts. I like how quickly he brings up the edit filter, but it all seems a little too "prosumer". (Professional/Consumer) Definitely reminds me of Adobe's Cool Edit Pro, but seems a little more versatile. Aesthetically it kind of looks like Logic. I'll stick with Cubase/Nuendo. As for Pro Tools... God left Digidesign a long time ago.
"Tube saturation comes in two types - both type 1 and type 2." Who wrote that? John Cleese ! Ha Ha. Joking aside though, this looks very promising. Looking forward to the release.
@norcicoso - I've owned Reaper and Podium for years, and have used them for full fledged productions. So from experience, I can safely say, Podium kicks Reapers ass....why dont you try Podium first, and come apologize after.
Tool Hud-brilliant. FX-Chains another steal from Ableton I think (similar to Ableton Racks) awesome! With that and Sonar's already existing Matrix view, I can stop wishing Ableton would get built-in audio editing capabilities and just use Sonar x1!! (Now, if I could just get my Launch Pad to "light up" with Sonar x1, I will be in Heaven!)
@aaronuws This is pretty common practice with software companies. The idea is that since you have owned the earlier software version for some time, you have extracted more of the "value" from it than someone who is going to by 8.5 today and really only use it for a few weeks.
@aaronuws I totally agree! But I think Sonar 8.5 was the last edition! ...I may be wrong, but I don't even see it listed on thier website anymore. Only X1 (which I forked out the $99 to buy, but still prefer my 8.5 better).
Cakewalk this looks great. Thanks for letting us know what the new product is all about. I have experience with Cakewalk 8 to the current Cakewalk 8.5 and usually issues are with hardware.
Currently my quadcore is humming great with Sonar 7 and I have seen 8 & 8.5 as a great addition to what I use today.... I am saving up. I really like the new tools you have designed.
...IS IT STABLE..? cakewalk has a habit of releasing upgrades that are full of bugs...and it takes them a year to fix um...maybe Roland will prove me wrong...i have 8.5pd for a year now i like it...mostly...so i guess i wont get a free bug filled upgrade...
does it have any virtual instruments or New VSTs???

Sonar X1 is fantastic, the last version of Sonar I used was version 4 years ago, but the UI overhaul finally compelled me to get X1.
The workflow is just awesome and feels very natural. Laying down some tracks has never been faster.
Admittedly, it still has a few bugs/glitches, hoping X1c will iron these out.

I cut my teeth on CW Pro audio 9 and would prefer to stick the a Sonar product. All I need to do is simultaneously record up to 6 audio channels then mix and master down. What product from this range should I buy and where from in the UK.
NickSayle 10 months ago
do you need a cakewalk controller if you want to externally record a keyboard?
staviebeatproduction 10 months ago
@staviebeatproduction - No ... You do not need a Cakewalk controller to record a keyboard .... Even today's basic computers come with 24BIT 96KHz Stereo Audio inputs .... MIDI can be recorded using USB based MIDI keyboards that are relatively inexpensive.
TrajanGregory 9 months ago
@khadijah098 Absolutely. There are lots of beat making tools in SONAR and I would say this is actually one of its strengths.
CakewalkSoftware 10 months ago 2
FL studio is better than this stuff..
mycyberclone 10 months ago
@khadijah098 Yes you can use any microphone, but it must be plugged into some kind of audio interface. SONAR X1 Essential can record audio from any input source.

Sgipon 10 months ago
@Sgipon Yes You have reason, the PC isn't affidable for professional audio recording.
RedForSound 10 months ago
Sorry I meant Producer edition - but I think that applies to Studio, tho that doesn't have the Pro Channel (but neither did Sonar 8.5)
sludgefingers 11 months ago
@sludgefingers Hm... Because that`s is something that`s a bit important. I dislike the parametric eq a great deal so I prefer to have a graphic eq instead. Another thing that`s important is that the program includes good, usable reverb-effects. I don`t need many, I just need one that`s satifying. Same with the eq also.
unlyckystrike 11 months ago
@unlyckystrike I really think if you looked at it in more detail you'd be impressed. There are a range of graphic EQs (including linear EQ) within Sonar X1 Producer plus a wide range of reverbs including the Perfect Space convolution reverbs - every reverb type or parameter you could specify. This thing really covers all bases in terms of functionality.
sludgefingers 11 months ago
@sludgefingers Nice. But the producer-edition is so expensive haha.. What about the studio-edition?
unlyckystrike 11 months ago
@unlyckystrike I couldn't say offhand but details will be on the Cakewalk site.

thor1460 1 year ago
...that all depends on what your mother board will support. If your motherboard can support 32 GB RAM, then Sonar will use what it needs. I use 8 GB and have very few issues, but I also use a lot of 3rd party plug-ins.
aaronuws 1 year ago
What about the drum-features in the program? Can you use them in a normal music producing-project with for instance guitar, bass and vocals recorded manually as audio-tracks? I mean, can you export the project as wave or mp3 with the drums added into it or do I need some sort of midi-device in addition to this to actually hear the drums? And what about the EQ, are there just one type of EQ or are there others?
unlyckystrike 1 year ago
@unlyckystrike Yes. Many options in Sonar for each of those things you want to do. Lots of different types of EQ.
sludgefingers 11 months ago
@sludgefingers In all the editions? There are 3 x1 editions as far as I know of.
unlyckystrike 11 months ago
Can Sonar X1 edit audio properly? Does it have noise filters compressor/limiter etc? Because audio editing is still pretty poor. I always must work with another sw if I want a simple noise filtering.

Sonar, making people regret getting a mac since 1987
polyphony89 1 year ago
Been a user since 7 producer and found it very easy to use but still producung great results. do not know why Sonar is not that popular in the UK. My only qualm with Cakewalk is the yearly upgrades. My studio is not making any money at present and the constant upgrades is really digging into my reserves. In saying that though, X1 producer is a must have. And that is no joke. I have worked with other DAWs and Sonar is keeping their own against the more popular names.
ServingMyJesus 1 year ago
i dont know what one to get producers essentials or studio someone help me :s i really like the look of this but looking at the 3 available confuses me
zeropuls75 1 year ago
@zeropuls75

I just want select-pay-download.

so if i bought studio 8.5 i can get this new software for free??
produccionesmiranejo 1 year ago

I've been using FL Studio for few years nov, simply because it was the quickest and easyest daw for me, although it lacked of few things. But this Sonar has the easyness of FL Studio and the power of the best daws in it, so i'll definately check it out and if it's as good as it seems, also buy it.

beku73 1 year ago
@beku73 More like logic 7 lacks a lot of features logic 8 and 9 has, I own both and comes close to logic not quite there yet.
teacee 1 year ago
I've become a huge fan of Sonar and have used producer 7 for over a year getting the hang of it (bootlegged) and with this version I'm quite certain I'm ready to drop the cash. It's true this version of sonar seems very producer, not musician, oriented. But that's exactly what I need as both a musician and a producer. They are trying to compete with protools, not Logic. And the clutter isn't that bad, it's organized clutter. I have the biggest mess on my screen in any other daw with effects etc.
iviaverick52 1 year ago
what about tools for MUSICIANS ! chord editor, voicing, chord grid, song parts, arrangement, score editor,...

NathanLee0921 1 year ago
I think Sonar needs to make a better sheet music view and fix the AudioSnap.

God left Digidesign a long time ago.

what sucks is that...
If you buy 8.5 PE you get it free, but if you already own 8.5 PE you have to pay $99 to "upgrade" to it.
Is that fair??? I don't think so. Maybe I misunderstood the pricing?
aaronuws 1 year ago
@aaronuws This is pretty common practice with software companies. The idea is that since you have owned the earlier software version for some time, you have extracted more of the "value" from it than someone who is going to by 8.5 today and really only use it for a few weeks.
frimpit 1 year ago
@aaronuws I totally agree! But I think Sonar 8.5 was the last edition! ...I may be wrong, but I don't even see it listed on thier website anymore. Only X1 (which I forked out the $99 to buy, but still prefer my 8.5 better).
