this song and pure snow from himikoden inspired me into the anime worl back in 2004. i'd seen many 90s anime, but never got hook until 2004. i happened to saw them both on azn channel at the time. whenever i listened to beautiful japanese songs like kiseki no umi, i don't feel the language ethic in it, but instead, i only heard some wonderful words that took me to a different world.
This is one of the most harmonically complex modern pieces of music that i've ever heard, i'm still trying to figure out the reasoning behind all the scale changes. I just can't understand how so many insane jumps that disregard any "normal" harmony guidelines can sound so beautiful. This is a masterpiece.
@SZDarkhack Yoko Kanno is an amazing and clever composer. Most of the more complex and compelling anime themes of that time tend to be her work. Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop, Macross Plus are just a few of my favs!
@SZDarkhack This is the song that made me a fan of Maaya's works, even though I had never seen the series before. I just heard the song and fell in love with it. Didn't know it was used for an anime at the time I heard it. Definitely one of THE prettiest songs I've ever heard for the reasons you've mentioned.
wow i was listening to maaya sakamoto a couple mins and i was listening to this song.. then it bothered me so much because it sounded really familiar... then looked it up and found out that it was from record of lodoss war theme. hah good stuff. had VHS tapes of it. didnt like the anime though. =/
Too true. I kept watching it, hoping for the quality to suddenly improve (or at least make it to the level of the original series), but it never did.
The -real- shame is that the original series was such a revolutionary anime with a truely interesting story and characters with real depth (Karla still defies easy description once you see the entire story). When they did this one, is always felt like they were repeating the original while ignoring parts of it ever happened.
Yeah, especially if you just count the first "Scepter of Domination" arc. The series has its flaws, but Orson's storyline alone was enough to carry me all the way through that part. The second half I can take or leave, but if you didn't feel for the guy by the end of the first arc, I don't know if you have a soul.
I only wish that the TV series was half as good as the opening intro/song. I bought the series as an import years ago, and dumped it on ebay as soon as i finished it. The OAV had more dated animation but a much better story.
Just finished watching ROLW (the story focussing on Parn). I wish it had the same intro song as this one. I actually liked the story there better than the one of this show, but thats just because i liked the characters more (meaning I dont like the new blue-haired kid at all). I'm just wondering; why are the two both called ROLW? Doesn't one of them have a surname or something?
I really miss these old school animes with this style. Stuff like this, Mobile Suit Gundam and Saint Seya are all examples. I really miss the old stuff, no matter how good looking the new ones are Y.Y I mean, I love them, but you're never going to get the same sense you do with the old stuff. All these new animes have fangirls/boys that will go, "WTF, u dont liek it, then FUK OFF" These old ones never had that. Maybe its the changing times, but the fact stays the same. The old stuff was amazing.
When animation costs more, you need an epic story, characters, and you will have a higher rate of epic anime. Nowadays there are still great anime, it is just they are overburdened with young fans who don't know what good anime is or never examine it deeply.
Also, there are many crappy anime flooding the world like Tekken and a plethora of moe garbage.
@TheTerrorUforgot Well, the thing with this anime is that the animation quality kind of took a dive when it came to the actual show. A fried of mine used to joke about how Lodoss TV seemed to have spent most of its budget on the opening movie. Regardless, the song and OP movie are beautifully done.
@LittleNekoAlchemist A lot of it has to do with the fact that back the Lodoss came out, anime was not well known on our coasts and studios had a little more freedom in terms of what they could make. I mean, Lodoss itself was based off a bunch of Dungeons & Dragons RP sessions. You wouldn't be able to find anyone willing to animate something like that for you today because studios are generally more focused on something that is "financially secure".
@LittleNekoAlchemist Yes, it's all because anime got really popular in the US. Due to that, quality control in Japan got lowered and so now there are many more series than before. Not only that, but much longer than usual. Just look at Naruto and One Piece! Such horrible series, with no quality control whatsoever. After watching GITS, Kozure Okami, Akira, etc., one can see that most series nowadays are RUBBISH.
@TheSecretAzNMan You may be right (not sure though, I think most anime sucks nowadays), but the quantity of bad anime makes the search for good anime much, much more strenuous.
@LittleNekoAlchemist im pretty sure its just nostalgia. im pretty sure we're part of the same generation cause i like these old animes too. but u gotta understand, its basically the stuff people grow up with that sticks in their minds for their entire lifetime. im 19 right now and was 7 when pokemon first came out and for me, those first few seasons were the best. to the kids of today, the newer seasons may feel like they're the best. as for my older parents, they're always saying
@LittleNekoAlchemist I agree, these old animes are good for their time but I still miss them, I still like them very much, cmon 20 years ago everyone was like WOAH WTF!! this is amazing!!!! and no some people just blow it off. Record of Loddoss War was always great.
@LittleNekoAlchemist um.......the old ones did.....but then again, the old ones do NOW. They didn't use to. back then, anime wasn't very common like it is now, so all the fans kinda understood each other. now, it isn't so. I LOVE the old, hand-drawn art, and while the new computer drawn stuff is awesome too....it isn't BEAUTIFUL like this is. They no longer have that same color, fluidity, or style they used to. I love new anime....but I'm drawn to the old stuff more. I know what you mean, bro.
@LittleNekoAlchemist I really liked the original Lodoss War oavs, but really... this tv series sucked. The animation quality was poor and jerky, and the plot pacing dragged. I really wanted to like it because of the awesome opening and because I loved the oavs, but it's obvious they couldn't afford to have the same quality of the opening for the actual series (in contrast to Cowboy Bebop for example).
@LittleNekoAlchemist The problem wasn't necessarily the way people can be assholes about any sort of critic, back when Record of Lodoss wars (the original series) was out, anime wasn't nearly as popular as it is today in the united states. In fact you were hard pressed to find anime anywhere except comic book stores, or hobby shops. Now you can find them in any multimedia store or electronics store. Long story short, the bigger the population of people liking something the more assholes there are
@LittleNekoAlchemist really it's just a basic economy perspective. Quantity usually doesn't equate to quality, and in this case i am referring to fans of anime.
Well the thing is, industry standards have changed.
Besides, the animation should match the quality of the story. If you look at something like Lucky Star, then up a little to Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, then Increasing up to the high psychological ones like Ghost in the shell, Death note, or Gankutsuou, then you can see the obvious differences in style. Right away, I can tell that this anime has a serious storyline to it, and I can expect a lot. It's not just messy anime, there's planning.
Part II Oh wind! I rise and you take Now I go to the Sea of Sulfur Where there is no hope - Thou (joy/sorrow) Whom I but have the Strength to believe in This pure torment will burst forth to record a drop of love between us that we share
One of your favorites? WTHheck? I bought the whole series and I tought it was 2 stars out of 5. Maybe the terrible English dubbing has something to do with it. The opening song is one of the best though...
Hey, Just because U don't like it doesn't mean anyone else doesn't. I didn't like the Main character in The Heroic Knight much, but that was still a good series. I grew up with it. My sister showed it to me. I'm big on the whole midevil anime stuff. If you don't like the eng. dub, than watch the subs. Sorry. Love the song too. (love the anime) watched it first when I was ten i think. I love it still.
Yea your quite right, just because i dont like naruto doesnt mean other people dont like it as well.(using naruto as example i was a naruto nut but i manage to get it under control now)
Ugh, Naruto is no comparison for Lodoss. Naruto is over-hyped, never-ending battles, as is common with Shonen Jump series. Lodoss doesn't have to try to continue with the next biggest or best obstacle or angst. It simply unfolds as the classic, epic fantasy it is.
i think most agree the anime wasn't that entertaining...but the opening...god...after 10 years...this is the only anime song I still listen to without being tired of it
@NoHeejin same here, i personally had to force myself to keep my eyes open through the entire anime. it was so boring but the opening and endings are so haunting.
@NoHeejin ......wasn't that entertaining? It's one of the greats, man! Probably so because, while the anime sorta lost it's flair after Spark was introduced, there's a whole universe of lodoss to be seen in other media.
The anime that was inspired by dungeons & dragons and ispired many authors of dungeons & dragons - alike books . For me...the only and true rpg-anime ever made . Spectacular story.
Can anyone tell me what is being sung by the chorus, in the middle of the song? I can't even tell if it's supposed to mean anything . . . but it doesn't seem to be part of the lyrics proper. . . .
Maya Kawai music!!! This is a real african tribal chorus and drums with japanese lyric I know becase I live here =^^= I love this song and all songs from Maya Mate ne.
The opening is so amazing, but I only got up to episode 14 before I got bored of it. I imagine the ending episodes are better, but I don't have the patience to watch the series.
I wondered all the time, why spark has a bandage around his eye in the opening!(e.g. 1:08) I thought in the last episode he would loose his eye or something. And in the end he didnt. I was quite disappointed. That would have made him much more attractive to me.
This music is awesome, I got it from a friend and listened on the winamp... when I listened to it "WTF? When did I get it? It's beautiful!" Then I started searching for lyrics and wanting to go after Lodoss
When I first saw this opening I was awestruck. Great music, vocals and opening clips. I was so disappointed by the actual anime itself. Nothing like the OAV... it was just horrible.
Wai!! A quartet! I had only just heard this song last year when I bought Maaya Sakamoto's Hotchpotch album for Christmas and listened to this one song all night long XD Still love it a year later, plus you can find the karaoke version on gendou.com! YOSH!
I need to go back and watch this again.

This is one of my favorite anime OP ever. Maaya Sakamoto is one of the greatest seiyuu singers I've ever had the pleasure of listening to.

YOSH!

I absolutely love Mayaa Sakamoto's voice. She's just amazing. And Yoko Kanno...the most amazing composer in anime history. Brilliant duo.
