@hiddentreasure73 What does this song have to do with Nico? Maureen Tucker sang it. And - if it's really the White Stripes - you can also hear that Meg is quite nervous, she's not used to singing at that point, I think. It's more of a cute joke to end the show with, than a serious performance.
The fact that strikes me the most is that she KNOWS she's a terrible singer, and it probably took lots, lots and lots of pressure from Jack to make her sing on stage - not that she doesn't enjoy it.
@leep90 that's a handy excuse, isn't it? there's hardly any evidence to indicate that it was in fact facetious. Arguably, that's the most non-facetious statement i'll read this year.

THIS! IS! FAKE!
Fact one: i don't know where this got recorded, but it sounds very strange. not like an common live recodring.
Fact two: this is not meg white. if you have heard a single song she is singing you have to know that. come one. its ridicoulus that nobody noticed that.
@MattkNT That's part of the innocent charm, you obviously aren't mature enough to appreciate the beauty of a song like this, so don't listen to it, go listen to some Metallica or something
@IWasBored12 rape is innocent charm, jfk's assassination was innocent charm, charlie chaplin doing heroin was innocent charm, homeless people masturbating in train stations in innocent charm
@niddyd You're full of bullshit, your immature, naive, nihilism would be amusing if it wasn't so stupid. Music isn't about singing on key or solo's or any of that, it's about feeling, if you don't understand that, you will never understand music.
@IWasBored12 and yet we're arguing this over a band that is what the radios would call a "modern rock" staple, because jack white doesn't wank bullshit solos ever....
but yeah i don't understand music, thus it gives me an innocent (or ignorant) charm
It's her first time, bro. Shit, give the gal a break. It sounds beautiful, in tune or not. When music becomes based on having everything perfect and in-tune, that's the day creativity dies.
She was the drummer/percussionist for the band for the majority of it's tenure from 1965-1971.(Although she did not drum on the "Loaded" album due to her pregnancy). Nico WAS an official member of the band, albeit briefly from 1966-1967. She sang several songs on their debut, "The Velvet Underground and Nico", but she made no other studio recordings with the band besides those. I think thats everything, reply if you have more questions.
Alright, nobody seems to have their facts right so i will explain as much as i can. I have read several biographies so these are not wikipedia facts. Maureen Tucker sang this song as the closing track of VU's third self titled album released in 1969. This song and "I'm sticking with you"(Recorded in 1969 but unreleased untill 1985 on "VU") are the only studio songs that tucker sings on, besides "the murder Mystery" which the whole band sings on. Continuing to next comment.

Don't you all know that Eddie Sedgwick sings on the album? I thought that was common knowledge. If you listen to "I'm sticking with you" (with moe), you'll be able to compare the two voices.
my bad everyone seems to think all these differant people sang this song originally when it was mo tucker. this isnt a wiki fact, its a fact. mo tucker was one of the original mebers of the vu and got kicked out for nico i'm just informing supposed fans(posers) my apologizes
Well, yeah Nico did it better, but the song is decent enough and of course fans are going to be more forgiving of Meg, especially considering that it's something new.
you can tell she's nervous..you can even hear her chuckle before and during the song. she's obviously not taking herself seriously..i think it's kinda cute/funny, lol.
this is the way this song has to be sung. the vocals have to be imperfect, its what makes it cute. i mean, moe tucker's vox was far from perfect, but for that song they were perfect.
Well, I don't think it was THAT bad :) It's just funny, maybe because it's always fun to hear Meg singing, but I guess I wouldn't stand a whole concert with her on the vocals.
haha love the fuck up at the end. me and a friend are doing this song at a gig soon, so it was nice to hear the fuck up to show that we're all human :D.
Still she was a bit out tune, but still good effort. It hard to sing when your not a singer.
hey guys obviously meg isnt primarily a singer...who cares whether or not it is in tune or pitch...im sure it was a spur of the moment live show thing as most white stripes line-ups are
Oh and also, the only ones denying that this is bad obviously can't tell what is in-tune and out of tune singing, which I find nearly as sad as this cover.
Ah, I dont like the key they put this song in. And Meg seems to sound out of tune. I love the Velvet Underground and the White Stripes, but this was just a bad cover.
Go Meg :) Although I feel almost bad listening to this as I know that she asked that the bootleg not be availiable as she is very self contious about it...but its just too lovely to pass up, and I think she has nothing to feel self contious about :)
Meg is so sweet though. :)
But, honestly, I like Velvet Underground's version better...the original version.

I wouldn't say Nico was an official member of the band. More of a guest or a kind of glamour Wharol-esque touch to the first album.
Also, this version of Afterhour sucks balls.
