Alas, the Imp of the Perverse has pervaded all entertainment of this age and a next-to-illiterate youth is comparing those dark stories of doomed beauty with cheap thrills in what they call 'movies' today. But it is not the first time that his dark imagination was misunderstood. The man was accused of first murdering and then fictionalizing the murder. And of even worse things I will not go into. And who was the man who visited his grave year after year? More than a legend?
I'm a little wary about watching this. I'm not going to complain about how people have ruined Poe, by all means, make a movie about his life. But an action/adventure movie? Really? About Edgar Allen Poe? As for the previous comment where someone stated that they ripped off a death from a SAW film, it's The Pit and The Pendulum. The clue was the fact that this is a movie about Edgar Allen Poe.
I love the idea and I do like Cusack. I think this movie is better suited to the genres of suspense, fiction and crime. I would not go precisely for "horror".
But people will have to remember (and keep in consideration) that he is /not/ a realistic Poe. This is more based on his detective novels, simple as that.
In America it has been announced as an 'R' and in Ireland a 16. Its British rating has not been announced yet but as British ratings are usually milder than Irish ones, I imagine it will be a 15. It certainly won't be below that, and I don't think it's quite strong enough to be an 18.
is there any blood in this film - i really want to watch it but my friend faints at blood so if there is i want to know- please thankyou if i get any resonces
@Nuckels37 yes, there isnt a second where there isnt blood. Even in the dining scene they drink blood, and eat dried blood, whilst in the background someone is frothing blood because he got murdered. Lol i exaggerate, but yes there will be blood.
@mzlunatikcz no dude.... poe had actually written a story on it dumass.... go read books before you jump to conclusions. The pendulum was actually something SAW copied.
@LivVilaVida Look, it wasn't necessary to call me a dumb ass. I did read the books but that was when I was in like freshman year. I'm just commenting on where I saw that pendulum.
For all Edgar Allen Poe Fans please read! I made an amatuer 30 minute film over the summer based of Poes story The Masque of the Red Death, where the Red Death returns in modern times. I hope to get more views on my movie so come check it out if you would like. I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks! :)
While this is undoubtedly a bastardization of Poe's work and biography....and this is coming from a passionate English major....it does look like a damn entertaining film. And you know what, I rather think Poe himself would find it flattering....in a gothic way.
I THINK YOU GUYS HATES LITERATURE OR MAYBE NOT A FAN OF EDGAR ALLAN POE ,, WELL BLESS YOUR INSULTING CRITICISM CAUSE YOU ALL EAT YOUR WORDS FOR I BELIEVE THIS MOVIE WILL SURELY HIT ..
@MasteroChieftan How can you hate metafiction? I don't really see how there is anything to hate about it. It's just a story in a story and it's a device that has been used in literature for hundreds of years. Sounds to me like you're being pretentious.
@cocopuff09120 No, I just can't stand metafiction. It's too contrived. It doesn't work naturally. A good story has a minimum of speed bumps that don't make you think about the integrity of the material or that you're watching a movie. Metafiction creates a 2 foot high speed bump that makes you say "hey, I'm watching a movie"
@PissGegenDenWind Im not saying that it shouldnt be in this movie, I was just making a point. I think that the movie looks amazing and cant wait to see it Midnight Release.
Wicked Awesome. I see no problem with having fun with literature. One of the greatest poets and storytellers of all time? why not pay respects and make something new with his works for the world to see. We have the original and we have the fantasy. How cool?
jesus christ....next they are gonna have a movie where George Washington and Ben Franklin are just a couple of loose cannons brought to the distant future to fight a war of independence against aliens.....
@krierster So? This film is based on Poe's stories that were written in the early 19th century. The Pit and the Pendulum is one of his most important and most famous stories, so why shouldn't it be in this movie? Just because there was a pendulum in SAW?
This appears to be a gritty reboot of Sherlock Holmes if Sherlock Holmes somehow managed to be even less interesting than the atrocity that was those Robert Downey Jr movies. I can only hope it was deceptively cut to appeal to the Sherlock fans and its actually not completely stupid. It seems kind of mean to make dumb movies about people who died. Sure he's dead so it doesn't bother him, but still it rubs me the wrong way since its not like he can defend himself or his work from this mess.
@mccinaz Okay smarty. To play devil's advocate, when you think of Edgar Allan Poe, master of horror….and you think about his voice….do you hear JOHN FUCKING CUSACK?!
Here's where the stuffy, holier than thou, hyperliterate white folks chime in with their stories about "classics" and how much more relevant their taste in literature, art and music are than the rest of us who want to see this film. While at the same time revealing their ignorance and closed mindedness by showing us that their tastes are actually limited to things that only stuffy, holier than thou, hyperliterate white folks find interest in.
After I was ranting about this trailer, my friend said something to the effect of, "What if this is really just a representation of Poe's madness before his death and it's all going on in his head?" I was like, "Yeah, that sounds awesome. It's too awesome for the filmmakers to have actually done something that brilliant."
@knightofbruma I can't help but laugh at that fucking movie trailer! before I saw the trailer, I thought it was some sort of B-movie when I heard the title. lol
@raduneo classics would soon be forgotten if they were not brought forward and quoted in popular media. And you haven't seen this movie yet, you don't know shit about wether or not it's good :).
@Bastarden Not necessarily true. Why do you think some of the classics have persisted through the ages in an world devoid of "popular" media? Because of the merit of the work. Books don't have to be movies in order to be preserved.

As foz19oz says, the classics persist because..they're classics. (greatness is part of the definition of a classic.
And I LOVE John Cussack,so I'm hoping this is good. ;)
@4him85 You're probably right but, I don't want it to be the Inspector! Luke Evans is too hot to be a bad guy! But even if he is the bad guy, he still makes an awesome villain. But still-that means he would have to die!
The thing is, there's a lot of uneducated people today in the world who don't know anything about the classics (be it in litterature/art/music), so they have nothing (worthwhile) to measure greatness by unfortunately...
the only thing is.... the popularity he would be getting from the murders is what makes the movie obviously historically inaccurate... he wasnt popular when he was alive...
This is ironic. Whoever Poe loved dies so I know the girl will not live, but I will love to see this movie.
