Thank you for all amazing videos!!! I find them really useful to me and they helped a lot in measuring and understanding proportions. I am trying to paint pencil portraits and I have never had any lessons and the time for them came soon and I am really glad that I found exactly these lessons!!! Thank you again!
For those of us who know nothing about drawing his lessons are sooo good. I have learned more in these few lessons that i thought i could and im 62 so things don't come easy. Your a great teacher
Well it's pretty obvious he doesn't spend half an hour calculating each and every point in every single drawing.
What he's teaching in this video is to show you how to do it technically, and once you've practiced it enough you'll be able to do it just by looking. These are tips for starting off until you're at the point where it just happens naturally.
You are right this isn't a technique. It is an exercise. It is set up for the person who does it to gain self insight and some confidence to do more portraits. Ita kinda like reverse engineering the process of breaking down what you see into something that can be interpreted and drawn.
There is no need to all these measuring ... we should train our eyes to be the reference for measuring. Not easy. But I think it's the best way to become Pro. in drawing.
don't make comments that show your ignorance of what he's trying to do: teach beginners techniques to get realistic portraits that need to be PRACTISED until they can do it by eye naturally. watch his vids from the start.
Thanks for teaching us different ways to draw portraits. I was wondering, if you haven't started in later videos, if you would time laps some of the drawing after you explain what to do, and go back to regular speed when you need to explain something further, That way you can put more on your videos.
P.S I really am learning a lot thanks so Much and God Bless
Waaay back when you were first shading the shapes, you used inly the one pencil. When doing the rough 'base' shading, is it fine to do this? And when would you advise bringing different pencils in? Thanks for this again ^^
I suggest learning to use one of the soft pencils. If you use a 4b you will learn to get a light delicate touch. Then you can use the other pencils to fill in the gaps of what you can't do with a 4b.
It's made for you to discover something. That's why I say there is a surprise and the surprise is not the person you are drawing. The surprise is that you will teach yourself to look at the world differently.
One thing i am learning is patience. When I would see videos of yours drawing somebody I would loose sight of how much time you really had invested into a drawing. I enjoy your insight into drawing.
This process is incredibly slow, but it works great for some trying it for the first time. The end results are usually impressive even for someone who has never drawn before...and everyone learns their own little shortcuts doing it. Patience is important but a lot of people end up finding out that drawing and other forms of art are very relaxing and the passing of time gets lost being in the moment.
Wish I could get to the Exercise sheet D:

Wow.
Thank you so much for this lesson and you really took your time on letting us know what you were doing, and I thank you for that.
I now finished 3 of the parts and almost finishing up with the last. (Which is about a week.)
Thanks again!
