She is killing those drums! It's kinda odd cuz you'd think that it would be a guy getting down on the drums like that. And then, her demeanor makes it seem very unlikely that she would be playing the drums. She seems so sweet and usually, the drum players are the tough guys of the group.. But no, it's all her on the drums, and she be wearin' em out, too!
lady ga,ga be ashamed very ashamed ,now this is true talent ,no stupid stage gimmicks , just natural beauty withe voice to match ,she was gone too soon
@jennifer23ish Why even compare?Lady Gaga is a performance artist. She has a really good voice and writes good songs and the flair or whatever is part of it. She's just very different than easy listening or whatever you would like to call this. I love the Carpenters so much and Karen had a rare gift and talent, but Gaga has true talent and she shouldn't be ashamed at all. It's just a whole different deal. She's from like Broadway or something. It's very different but she does have loads of talent
@PullSomeTuber If you think so then, that is good for you ,but I don't think gaga is that talented because she has to alWAYS HAS to add stage gimmicks crazy oufits, and shoes she can barely walk in ,and during one award shoe she came in an egg carried by some men ,I just think she has to add in order to be heard , her voice is not that great !!!
@jennifer23ish She does that because that's what a performance artist does and she's taking performance art to the ultimate level, so to speak. She does have a really good voice. Not everyone is going to like her. I've even heard many respected recording artists speak highly of her voice and not just the performance art part of it. Not that they are the be all end all. I even thought she did before I heard them. It's just that she has an appealing voice to many. Not all. I respect your opinion.
@jennifer23ish Lady Gaga may have some elaborate costumes, however she is a fine pianist and unlike Karen Carpenter, she writes her own songs. Karen was a great drummer, but the only reason she's famous at all is because she crooned ballads penned by the hit songwriters of the day. Why do people watch videos of people they like and feel like they have to say nasty things about somebody else. What's the difference between Gaga and Elton John or do you hate him too?
@drwippit Lighten up ,I don't hate lady Gaga ,or elton John, gaga is just to gimmicky for my taste,Karen's voice was just beautiful ,and she didn't have to be carried on stage inside of an egg to get noticed ,just sayin :)
@jennifer23ish Yep, music was real back then. No gimmicks, just kids who spent their lives mastering their instruments and act. I miss these early very talented groups from the day.. The Jacksons when they were little, they were all great before commercialism got ahold and wrung them for everything it was worth.
Now days everything is a production first, and the song comes second and bands dont make it on talent alone, they make it on image and popularity. Todays music scene is pathetic.
the institution of marriage and the cold hateful heartless worldwho'd rather pay three times the rate to a pp than a vgn, she couldn't survive without being married and no man will put up with a superstar fee male unless he's a pin mp
I heard that when they found out that the duo would do better with Karen singing in front of the stage, not behind her drums, was difficult. It was like separating Linus, the cartoon character from the comic strip Peanuts, from his "security blanket". :)
Richard is playing through a Baldwin Exterminator amp (2-15's, 2-12's and 2 -10's) and the bass player is playing through a Baldwin Bass Amp (with a 15 and 12" speaker) . I wonder if they had an endorsement deal with Baldwin?
Oh, Karen started as a drummer. Growing up with Richard, she used to see Richard playing the piano all the time with his jazz buddies, and she wanted to join but didn't know how. So, she asked her teacher in high school in CA if she could learn how to drum. And boy, did she learn! I don't know where she developed the amazing voice for which she's famous! She just wanted to be a drummer... and she was an amazing one! May your soul rest in peace, dear Karen.
Multi-Talented. It's amazing how much she refined her voice later. She had a great voice here, but it matured a lot through the years, and she added lots of little bells and whistles to her style.
@ttran16cle This was before the "Carpenters" and before Richard started arranging songs for Karen so that she sang in her deeper, contralto voice. That voice that became the signature sound of the Carpenters starting with their first #1 hit "Close To You" and followed by "We've Only Just Begun."
damn was she a talented woman...the world has missed her since her passing and will continue for the rest of the days...the good lord doesnt give us many like her...
Karen looked so cool and capable in this performance that John Wayne -- who was one of the celebrity judges that awarded them the prize for this performance -- arranged for her to read for the part of Matty in the movie True Grit, in which Wayne won an Academy Award. Thank goodness she didn't get the part, or the Time Line would have been altered.
It says in the video this was in 1966 and some say it's in 1968. If this IS 1966, then at 16 years old, she can already play head to head with Buddy Rich! And Buddy Rich is a big fan of Karen's drumming - to think Buddy Rich likes very few musicians. THAT'S SAYING SOMETHING! Oh yeah, Karen looks LOVELY here.
What drew my attention to this vid was Karen, but i thought it was Helen Reddy with the nun habit on, and lol Karen back then had some really LOONNNGGGGG hair and that "thingamagiggie" that girls used to wear to keep their hair outta their faces,...thumbs up to ya CrescentNoon and thankin' ya for the COOL UPLOAD! = )
Karen had to put up with "girls don't play the drums" comments all of her life, from her brother, her teacher, managers, and critics. All men, by the way. She was a trend setter and far ahead of her time.
Karen's voice didn't fit the song. She was definitely better at singing ballads and lighter pop fair. However, she did show that she was a great drummer and is one of the few along with the likes of Don Henley and Phil Collins that can sing and play the drums at the same time.
@Sargebri Thank goodness none of the record producers and television producers agreed with your obviously wrong statemens. Otherwise, we wouldn't being enjoying it now. It's also amusing how this is their first television appearance and this song is the one they and the producers agreed on, but your "professional" opinion differs.
@audioyak Dude, all I said was that her voice didn't fit the song. It would almost be like Ozzy singing a Carpenter's song. You never heard Karen sing harder edged songs or disco for a reason. I didn't say she was a lousy singer. In fact, she was probably one of the best female vocalists of her era. You obviously need to read the comment further before you say such a blanket statement like that.
@Sargebri I agree with audioyak, her voice does fit! So it's such a relief that not her nor the producers saw your comment! I rather have such a low life in this generation than the generation Karen was in, at least she won't have to suffer what we have to put up with. But life is short, so hopefully we won't see your comments after a while.
@Gleekedgal See the above comments. Karen Carpenter was a great singer. However, she was not a rock singer. She was one of the greatest ballad singers of her era and for you to rip me for saying so shows how obsessive you and the other person are. You also need to not just look at the comments but read them fully before you go ahead and rip me for making an opinion.
Shit, I thought this was the White Stripes: hot chick, terrible drummer; hot guy, ok guitarist, but still not good enough to be millionaire-attention-band; FUCK we've sunk as a country; FUCK we've lost our culture! Fuck, we've dumbed down everything: you are stupid peasant fucking NO BODIES, and you not only like it, you brainless fucks, you REVEL in it! Fuck you all.
Too bad she didn't gain some weight and form and all girl rock band with Grace Slick. Hell, she could have easily blown Ringo Starr or Charlie Watts off the stage.
aw bless her. She was so beautiful. Her drumming was not as recognised as it should have been. Fab for a woman too of that time what folk today take for granted. Her voice was one thing heaven sent but dont lets forget her first love...the drums. RIP KC. Often in our thoughts.
@thezepp68 I realise that you think that its funny to make insensitive comments about someone who suffered many years with a disease but you just look like a knob!!!! Is there a positive correlation between someones raw, unbelievable talent and their weight!!! Im guessing you look like Brad Pitt???? mmmm doubtful!!! I suspect your physical appearance is as aesthetically pleasing as your lack of intelligence and sensitivity.
@thezepp68 I can't believe that somebody is small mided enough to put an insensitive comment such as the one above!! Does her weight have any correlation with her amazing raw talent? Im guessing you look like Brad!!!! Or is the truth your physical appearance is as aesthetically challened as your intelligence?
Sometimes the artists skill on an instrument is overshadowed by their vocals; Karen Carpenter(drums) was one such artist, Nat "King" Cole (piano) was another. One can make an argument for the Carpenters to be inducted in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Now, before you dismiss it out of hand, consider the number of hits, number one records and dominance in the era (the '70's) and the lasting popularity of their songs, despite their "soft" sound and image. Just food for thought...
This was from the old College Bowl talent show. I remember as a kid seeing this when it was originally aired. They did several shows since it was a competition.
By the way, John Wayne wasn't 4-F. He was 3A. At 34, he got a family deferrement which was common early on.
In 1975, Karen was voted best drummer in the Playboy Jazz and Pop annual poll. True, Karen's enormous fame and popularity at the time probably explained much of the vote, but she was nonetheless a really first-rate drummer, even though her singing genius forced her to move away from it. Check out the 1974 Budokan concert, on youtube, for some amazing live drumming by Karen on Johnny-be-Good.
This clip is actually from 1966 not '68 - Karen was only 16. John Wayne made a guest appearence on this episode and was so impressed with Karen that he convinced the executives from the film studio for his upcoming movie role to screen test Karen for one of the roles (she didn't the part but what an accolade)
She was stunningly talented. I love the equisite '66 dress and hairband. Seems to be a live performance, her singing is shaky while doing drum duties at a high level. Great piece, Love You Forever Karen!
You guys can ding me but John Wayne was a 4-F, which should stand for phoney, phoney, phoney, phoney. All during WW II, he never left the states, and yet took roles where he was portrayed as having won the war by himself. The real heroes did their duty, and those that came back, quietly built one outstanding nation. So, ding me all you want, if you take exception. His name does not belong in the same page with Karen Carpenter, anyway. Talent vs.Image. Talent is superior every time.
Yes, but there is a subtitle in the upper right portion of the screen that says "1966" which means she may have been only 16! Regardless, the talent is just too awesome to believe.
What talent. It is remotely possible that she took up drums after seeing the British group The Honeycombs and their lady drummer Honey Lantree do Have I the Right. Whatever source she learned from in terms of drum playing, she did a great job in this clip.
Significant for historical purposes only. This is a rip-off of the Mamas and Papas version, and Karen isn't really on top form here, except on the drums!
I never said they didn't (one of the greatest ever Motown recordings), but this doesn't rip off their version. It is however almost a note for note copy of the M & Ps' cover of the song from around 1966.
This clip should be watched by all the Idol pretenders. This is just awesome talent at its best. She is one of the greatest female vocalists (and drummer) of all time, and I've always thought that as music lovers we are all so lucky she had a musical genius in Richard as her brother and mentor. The combination was unique and has never been matched.
I agree, I discovered the Carpenters in 1971 & still listen to them, there will never be another Karen. She was an excellent drummer but that's not what sold all the albums--it was that voice, that hauntingly beautiful voice with perfect clarity & pitch. Even though she is good in this clip her voice was more geared to slower songs. An up-and-coming singer who reminds me of her is David Archuelta (from American Idol), he has the same incredible talent.
Why'd she have to die so early. Imagine how much bigger the two carpenters would be today. May her name never be forgotten.

This was from the old College Bowl talent show. I remember as a kid seeing this when it was originally aired. They did several shows since it was a competition.
By the way, John Wayne wasn't 4-F. He was 3A. At 34, he got a family deferrement which was common early on.

wow, color me impressed. It's tough to play drums and sing at the same time, especially if you're female.

Damn! She's hot!
I wonder why she never played on a rock band instead of the popy ballads from the Carpenters, she's good.
Oh, wait, I know why, she is a woman...

It was True Grit. Karen would done well, naturally, but John Wayne is just one more Hollywood fake.

Whatever source she learned from in terms of drum playing, she did a great job in this clip.
efrem1 2 years ago
@efrem1 Remotely, but I doubt it. By all accounts, she became fascinated with the drums in high school marching band.

GIRL CAN DRUM!! huzzah for girl drummers everywhere. i'd have her play the drum tracks on my songs if she were alive today :'(

Significant for historical purposes only. This is a rip-off of the Mamas and Papas version, and Karen isn't really on top form here, except on the drums!
cbak12sg 2 years ago
Martha Reeves and the Vandellas did that song first
1000huzzahs 2 years ago
I never said they didn't (one of the greatest ever Motown recordings), but this doesn't rip off their version. It is however almost a note for note copy of the M & Ps' cover of the song from around 1966.

so simple but so talented...a perfect beggining from both of them...love you Richard and KC!

This clip should be watched by all the Idol pretenders. This is just awesome talent at its best. She is one of the greatest female vocalists (and drummer) of all time, and I've always thought that as music lovers we are all so lucky she had a musical genius in Richard as her brother and mentor. The combination was unique and has never been matched.
haematube 3 years ago
I agree, I discovered the Carpenters in 1971 & still listen to them, there will never be another Karen. She was an excellent drummer but that's not what sold all the albums--it was that voice, that hauntingly beautiful voice with perfect clarity & pitch. Even though she is good in this clip her voice was more geared to slower songs. An up-and-coming singer who reminds me of her is David Archuelta (from American Idol), he has the same incredible talent.
