I too finished SQ1 and had no major problems with it, as my personality was to check out everything, collect everything and, if necessary, spend 30 minutes trying to get the right combination of words to get an action played out! I also loved the deaths and purposefully on two or three occasions would 're-kill' myself to see them again - and the humour - oh the humour!
Space Quest was one of the first games I also played. However, the beginning was so difficult (especially as I was young Finnish knowing only few English words) that I never got pass that. Except by loading saved games that were played by friends brother. Anyways, I remember how cool and awesome game it was at the times. Good review!
"If you don't already have it, you'll need DosBox..." But what if you have an old computer?
"It's easy to use..." I disagree. The first time I used DB, I found it nearly impossible to use because of the awkward mount system! DOS didn't have that!
Took me and my brother about the same ammount of time (six years) to finish this game off. We got a lot further before becoming totally stuck though. Mostly it was syntax things that held up us, namely "push chest against wall" after you finally make it onto the sarien ship near the end. Nonetheless, awesome game.
I like Space Quest a lot (especially the humor), but today many riddles seem just unfair.
I remember that in Space Quest II, you needed a special item in the middle of the game, or else a monster would eat you. And that item (the cubix rube)was only obtainable right at the beginning of the game...
I always wondered if there was any connection to Space Quest and Futurama

I recently found the SQ Collection for XP at Big Lots for $6! I keep looking for the KQ and PQ series but to no avail.

Yeah I remember that about Space Quest 2. I think I ended up using a walk through on that game.

You were able to finish SQ1 without a walkthrough? Wow.
