«Madre, sigo siendo tu hijo, sabes que he esperado mucho tiempo para oírte decirlo... madre, me dejaste y me hiciste alguien, ahora sigo siendo un niño pero nadie me dice que no.»
@beverlee329 cheers for tht bro.....To many people's astonishment, I loved U2 all the way and esp whn JT came out but THIS....I thought there is no way I will hate this band...their talent is limitless and it always makes me dance and make me joyous and sad due to the true depth of the songs.
I wouldn't recommend any newcomer to U2 (such as myself, I suppose) the greatest hits/compilation "The Best Of: 1990-2000" particularly because of the re-working/remixing of excellent tracks such as "Discotheque" and "Staring At the Sun" and the absense of "If God Will Send His Angels" of which is arguably the best track off the album next to "Wake Up Dead Man". The album's individual songs possess individual strength not found on "Zooropa" (my opinion).
Radiohead had already played a prominent role in American mainstream music with "The Bends" and the overrated and inevitably commercialized "Creep". So to say U2 'opened the doors' for them would be inaccurate.
@josephcent There were some drum machines used on the Pop album as Larry was out for back surgery for a while...so band members had to find a way around his absence. He was originally against using drum machines, but after hearing what the band had achieved without him, was more receptive of the idea. But his drumming takes the fore over machines.
@GITMachine Bold statement. If you listen closely up to the 38 second mark, it is composed entirely of loops. Kind of impossible to say if they were all recorded live in the first place. Larry was the primary man on the beat machines and i'd say this is one of his most processed drum tracks on the album. Not too sure why 43 people like the idea : Larry put his production aside for this song. He pulls off what few drummers of his caliber would be willing to: exploring new sound, not repeating.
I think the song refers to Bono's mother, who died of cancer when Bono was a teenager, It can also be used as a more "polite" way to say "motherfucker"
The live versions on YouTube refered to by liamWDkelly aren't live versions. They are spliced video from Popmart tours with Mofo remixed versions of the song attached. They are usually the bland, lifeless drumbeat version. I was at the Popmart concerts and this album version is more like the sound of the live shows.
After listeninig to 80's era which was fabulous make no mistake. I was astonished to hear POP (FUCK CRITICS) which blew me away. Discotheque,Do You Feel Loved, Mofo, this album kicked off big time. I was amazed by their dimensions which are limitless.
ONE HELLUVA BAND THIS!!!!!!
LOVE U2 FOREVER - There is no one, no one who is as good as them.
For me is one of their best and underrated albums....totally different what they were making before this album

This album made me unlove U2. I still adore Achtung Baby to death but this album ended it all. 17 years ago. What a horrible album
ColinZeal01 2 months ago
@ColinZeal01 this album was 14 years ago and Achtung Baby was 20 years ago. How the hell did 17 years ago come into it

I think a lot of people don't realize this album was not only experimental but somewhat satyrical of the pop genre, and not an attempt to emulate it.
