Every democrat country poper name in title is The Republic of ... of America.. (Republic, a type of government where the citizens choose the leaders of their country) but some people have choosen to use the word America solely as for the use of the United States just cause it also says of America.. When I was 12 I learned the for the first time the word hispanic and the miss use of the words America and Spanish in country that supposely politically correct :)

Dont think this ever gonna get fix and given the dignity of the American Continent back to its rightful owners which are all countries who belong are part make this piece of land mass. The expression dates back to Europeans traveling to America but most when saying coming to America ment anywhere in the continent as the entire continent to europeans was a land of opportunity free of oppression from Traditional Europe. Years laters their descent have made the grave error of now calling USA that.

But, Greenland's not a ‘Contient of itself’. As I far as I know, belongs to the Kingdom of Denmark just like the Faroe Islands (part of N.A in territorial sence).
America's divided in North, Center, South and I forgot to mention, also the Caribbean.
There's also something called ‘NORTH AMERICAN LEADERS' SUMMIT’, which is composed by the countries I already mentioned: Canada, United States and Mexico.
… It's all in Wikipedia btw.

In Italy many times we use "americano" for speak about USA people (and only USA), people from south america we called them "sudamericani". But if an italians speak about "americano" is about a yankee :D. He take this song from another song and this is in italian.
Anyway is right the correct words in italian for north americans is "nordamericani" and "statunitensi" for USA people. Called "americani" only the yankee is wrong
