The message would resonate if the messenger wasn't so annoying. Why the dramatic try hard? If this is supposed to be the face of progressive education, then good luck with that, "world".
Love the fast-paced video style, the logical narrative was set up brilliantly, but the conclusion was ... how to put it? Can I say, "less than clear"? Or perhaps, an anticlimax? "Educators need to change nothing. Except know that the world is changing". Well yes - so what is the point of the message? I really wanted there to be a strong message about what worldwide institutions were doing wrong, but there wasn't!
Self education is possible. I taught myself to program C and use linux from a book when I was 14. My experience is that people tend to just learn what they need to know. But universities have a monopoly on legitimacy. This is the problem, that public opinion has not changed with the times to accept the legitimacy of self-education.
@fictionrules Seriously, I agree with the part that education is vital in today's world, but self education is crap. You cant teach yourself what you yourself dont know. Maybe how to fingerpaint. But not advanced topics in physics or computer science or writing. And information on the internet is not always reliable, not always easy to understand and the more difficult the subject the scarcer the information.
@DannyIsaac1 Did I miss the bit where he mentions anything about self education in this clip at all? I don't think he is a proponent of self education. More that he is saying that any idiot can teach themselves facts, but an institution has to do MORE than just that.
@fictionrules Im not the troll here, i actually care about the world, and i swear at him because he is spreading a message of ignorance. Taking charge of his own education? Fuck no, this guy's idea of education is go on internet and google shit. That doesnt even come close to what you learn in a good liberal arts college. An 8 year old can google shit. Does that give him credentials or a particular skill set needed to excell in today's society? NO!
Hey Dan, I wanna thank you for inspiring me and countless others to think freely. Two years (minus two days) after this has been uploaded, I can still remember every single word to this vlog.
this is the difference between a private and public school education. my sister just comes home and spews her teachers opinions, where as my teachers have constantly given me DBQ's and even told me to Google things.
@DannyIsaac1 as you might have noticed Dan is not a typical drop out. He is taking charge of his own education, where as you have to swear at him to feel better, troll.
Information has many properties, and values. Universities do not simply provide you with information you can get for free, dumbass. Information that comes from a professor is reliable, factual and valuable, as opposed to your video. An institution of higher learning offers an ability to think critically and the ability to distinguish real world issues and concepts from the delusional fantasies that universities are stupid which is what people think by watching your video judging by the like bar
Dan, I know this is old, but what do you think the "fix" would be? You said if the educators don't change with the world, the world will decide it doesn't need them. Teachers can only do so much with teaching. I am a Frosh in College, moving towards a degree in Art Education (H.S. & possibly College Art Teacher) so this is the main reason I am asking this. Though an Art class is different than most class structures I would still like to know your view on what a fix could be for educators.
Don't drop out. Change the beast from the inside. A degree is not an education, this is true. A degree just allows you a seat at the table where the decisions get made. You should be at that table. I am sure at a school as a large as Nebraska you can set up an independent study.
@tdillmann As much as I'd like to agree that we can change the system from the outside, this statement definitely explains how I see it. "A degree just allows you a seat at the table where the decisions get made. You should be at that table." So true.
BTW. Dan, I truly enjoy your passion, candor, and energy. I strongly encourage you to pursue a Doctorate in Education, put your wonderful mind to work helping us transform education, and REALLY empower your voice. There were some diamonds in there Dan, but you're still speculative in nature. The problem is deeply comprehensive and very complex. I really appreciate the piece about teaching 21st century skills to our youth. Very inspiring! Thank you.
We are attempting the 21st century learning push. Question: Didn't "institutional education" inform your opinion and give you the intellectual capacity to make the ability to think critically and make such a well-developed video argument? You're half way there Dan. Go back to school, inform your opinions, build the CREDENTIALS to influence change. Get "Dr." in front of your name, learn how to be empirical in your approach. Contribute to change instead of throwing stones at the change effort.
Good philosophy. Yes, education institutions need to get caught up. Ditch them? hardly. At this point, if an architect or engineer learned how to design buildings by just looking stuff up in Google, I do not want to step inside that building.
Access to 'lots and lots and lots' of information cannot replace the ancient method of skilled humans passing on their skills to other humans through teaching them. Going to school is interactive, collaborative and engaging. Reading stuff online is not.
@reepicheep90 the things i've learned about physics / biology / aerodynamics were all learned outside a classroom and on my own time... why did i not take classes at the university? because at the university it would take me 600 bucks in a book and tuition for 1 class just to have some other guy tell me to read the book. half the teachers now just have you read the book and then IF your confused they correct you. i learned to fly outside a classroom... so i guess you dont trust my skills.
@gowill2 i just take the classes now just to get through the hoops for my aviation science degree... but there are far too many people who think a university is magic... and they take the class and never really understand anything theyve been told... i've learned a TON through google, through peer reviewed articles i found ON google. the internet just allows me to find information . internet =/= bogus information... infact i find it has better information than my books.
@gowill2 Yes, education needs a reform. But still, you learned to fly with a human teaching you. That's what needs to be kept. It wasn't you alone with the Internet. We need to reform teaching but keep it all about human interactions. We also need to keep valuable methods of assessment and certification. I would not trust your skills if you taught yourself to fly and never got certified through any institution.
"One had to cram all this stuff into one's mind for the examinations, whether one liked it or not. This coercion had such a deterring effect on me that, after I had passed the final examination, I found the consideration of any scientific problems distasteful to me for an entire year." ---Albert Einstein
My dad always says "we teachers are teaching our students to solve problems that haven't been thought of yet with tools that haven't been invented yet."
You know how frustrating it is to convey this information when one is actually part of the system?
The clarity of your arguments do not matter. Flawless logic does not matter. Evidence does not matter.
All that matters is the gun in the room and the willingness of those holding it (in education- it's the state) to pull the trigger at anyone who disagrees with them. As long as force is the prerequisite, new strategies will fall on deaf ears as western education sinks into its own quicksand.
So true! College degrees have become such a commodity when looking for a job in this economy, and Colleges/Universities (which many people forget are very big businesses) are in the BUSINESS of making money! They do so by perpetuating the MYTH (mostly to minorities and women) that a college degree is required to get a good job... maybe 30 years ago, but it's just not the answer anymore today!
Sorry your program at UN was not relevant and suited to your learning style. As a high school teacher, I (and my fellow teachers) are working to foster creativity and critical thinking/investigation skills in our students. Even in math and sciences this is important. As an English/drama broadcasting teacher, critical thinking is central to my our class work. While the sciences/math degrees do focus on facts, many humanities profs. are looking to critical/independent thinking from their students.
Yes!!! Our school and college systems are a joke when it comes to regurgitating b.s. (old b.s.)...My Masters in Professional Counseling program was a joke...most schooling suppresses free speech and is much more of a dictatorship than anything else by extreme narcissists who think they are wonderful with their 'higher' degrees, I have found MANY to be very poor in being able to come form their heart and see the wholeness and completeness with in each child of LOVE (GOD).
You are that child of LOVE...when you get out of your egoic head and come from your heart! Love is what you really are. Love is what life is all about!
@anythingbutash he doesn't hes just a guy who shares his thoughts on the internet and makes people think. there is a lot of you tubers like that and in Dans case he doesn't talk about some of the that stuff Phil puts in his videos such as guy stuff or updates on all the new gadgets. Dan is more about educating and getting people to think and Phill gives the news
Also, I think you were at the wrong school or in the wrong field. Aside from gened courses, my classes were small and focused on interaction. And when I got to college the internet was fairly new... I mean that was the first time I had email. We had to use books because all I could get on the internet was that stupid dancing hamster. In fact I still remember some of the really good class discussions. I'm sorry you had an unsatisfying experience.
I find your argument flawed. While the world of information is changing at blinding speeds and the lecture model is inefficient on an individual basis, the internet is not capable of what you say. Information is not regulated, so students who depend on it as their main source are getting a lot of wrong information. Also, while synthesis is more important than memorization, you need to fully understand information (which means memorizing it) before you can create new ideas based on it.
@katpiercemusic I agree with your comment. I get where the he is coming from because the information age is new, but schools integrate it now. I'm going to medical school and MOST of our info comes from online. Also, as others mentioned, being creative is important, but you cant "create new ideas" without learning what you're talking about first. Do you want a doctor that doesnt know how your body works but has a new idea for how to fix you? Or medicine from no chemistry classes?
MORON!!!! you don't know what you're saying...show your self to me when you already become a PRESIDENT of a company without going to school then i'll surely salute you MORON!!!!
Art is being removed mainly in schools because it's a 'hobby' rather then an actual 'class'. We live in an artistical economy. Math once was an art, and art created math. Science and math are made up, you can't actually prove them truely. We cannot prove we live on this planet scientifically either(unless your religeous and some form of god per say created you and everything else) I think you'd be a wonderful Kopiaist.
What does "begs the question" mean to you? This shallow incoherent rant is ill served by the stylistic themes stolen from zefrank and rush limbaugh. Pop a zit and read a book, dipshit. Try the open university if you want an education commensurate with your ideas. You are a deadbeat. Read Gamsci, and marx and, what the hell, Marshall Mcluhan. I look froward to hearing what you have to say after you have done your reading, bitch. Peace ;D
I think you're right. Schools should focus on promoting creativity, critical thinking, and writing as opposed to facts. A lot of the stuff I learn at school is completely useless.
The English Lit. AP? Is about rhetoric. Convincing people to do stuff, or believe stuff, or just whatever you want to convince them of.
I wish school were as easy as memorizing facts. But instead we are to analyze and form opinions and make connections. And bring something new to the table. At least, that what all of my hardest classes are about.
I will definitely be keeping this in mind, though, when choosing a school. Wouldn't want to waste my time memorizing facts when I could be learning :)
OMG, I just dropped out of school for similar reasons! And monetary ones. But you know, I think if you have a really good teacher, they can help to get your attention to all the most important stuff, and that's why I'm going back when I have the rest of my life together.
With you right until "education is...". You got that all wrong. Shame because you were perfect until then but let me put in my 2 cents. Facts are still an important part of education because facts provide us with a basis for acquiring essential skills. I agree that the landscape is changing, but don't be so quick to abandon facts altogether.
thats some good shit right there!. very good video and i must say i thought i was the only one.. he is right.. you learn to memorize facts in institutionalized schools and you dont learn how to educate yourself...
i would like to say that, in my highschool, several of my classes have facebook groups as well as school sponsored webpages/forums where we are encouraged to confer with our teachers and fellow students. i think this, coupled with lecture based classes is a great way to invite education into the modern age
thank you! I never understand why we have to learn about outdated modes of atoms or how to write biographies? sometimes i want to lay my head down and make up for the sleep I lost for waking up at 6 in the morning? why do they expect us to absorb the most boring information ever created at 7:30 in the morning? i just don't get it.....
Surely an education is meant to equip one with the perspective and skills to discriminate between facts and nonfacts (and true facts and untrue facts), and to further deal with those facts in an intellectually and/or professionally useful way? I can see that I'm not the only person identifying this as a disgruntled (if good-hearted) strawman argument; but I am surprised to see so many people shaking their heads in agreement...
Unbelievable. This is a video talking about how it's not important to know facts and learn facts, but spends the first first few minutes spewing stuff that is falsehoods and non-facts.
This is why I'm an Engineer. My teachers love to teach, because if they didn't, they'd be out making way more money. Most of my classes don't have textbooks and we're encouraged use Wikipedia. A large portion of my classes are directly structured around making me better at my job; we're expected to learn how on our own time. Sure there were MANY hoops to jump through to get here, but that's what the "real world" is all about. You don't have to like it, but you do have to jump.
Dan you should go check out Joshua Foer. The fact that society no longer gives any value to the amount of knowledge we can store in our minds, or is moving in that direction anyway, is not necesarily a good thing. Also, I think good schools teach you not just facts but the right facts, something hard to find in the information age where you can easily drown in facts not knowing which to pick. They can also teach you abilities, which are not the same as facts.
My problem with Dan's argument is that you need discipline to achieve - something that is instilled in you by others. You need someone to make you do the work, and if everyone just sits at home on their computers, they will not be motivated or disciplined.
@derwos Dan's not saying people should stop going to school and get what they need from the internet; he's saying that schools need to adapt their teaching methods to that of the modern age. Instead of teachers shoving facts down students' throats, they should teach in a way that allows students to find information on their own. We don't need to KNOW information; we need to know how to FIND information. Having this in schools will give us the tools we need to succeed, but still have discipline.
Your argument is invalid. Not every degree is a game of remember-the-fact, I guarentee you there is a correlation between students who do well and those who understand the fundimental ideas behind a subject and its examination. You cheapen years of hard work of many individuals and the reason why degrees are so highly valued is that while the content your learning may not be applicable directly to your industry the signal you give to employers is that you can perserveer and work at a challenge..
However being able to leave your mark on history is becoming less and less possible. So others having access to information allows us to advance everyone at the same time but no unique people are created because if the unique person is now equal to the common person.
man has devoted his entire life to researching a certain thing then the average joe goes to look up the conclusion of the hard working person on google what will be the value of the hard working persons conclusion persons research?
Do you really want your doctor to stop and google search what the next step in the procedure? ...Education IS NOT just memorizing random facts. It is stringing them together, making connections, learning how to do something and practicing that. Just because your major (history, was it?) has relatively no value does not that the same applies to every major... That's why they say much of liberal arts is useless in the real world. Your idea isn't novel.
@WhatsUpEarth I think liberal arts is only useless for making money. Isn't liberal arts all about stringing facts together and making connections, as you say? If one were to say, minor in it, I think they would benefit.
@derwos Oh this is very true, I agree. I think that many liberal arts skills are important. Take Dan, who was a history major (i think...) anyway history is an integral part of political science/law/international relations/etc., however; a major in just history probably won't get you far.
I think the value of college education really varies both with the school and the field. I had some useless classes like the ones you describe, but most of my classes (english, psychology) were small and discussion based--not at all centered around the memorization of facts.
Okay dan so I agree with you on somethings. I agree that the education system has many flaws. However the internet did not write its self and if we stop learning facts and things like that then soon there will be no more to put on the internet. and then the internet will just be full of old information and we will be back to where we were a long time ago. However I agree that textbooks are the single most dumbest part of college and should not cost as much as they cost now.
oh but i think you should learn that facts to discover or come up with new facts. know what i mean? learn the facts and apply that to innovational thinking. so learning facts can be a foundation of epiphany
so true. i've never thought like that you are brilliant hey you should speak out on your own TV show. i mean not only because your opinion, ur tone and voice are perfect !
Generally, I agree, and applaud you for your stand. I must say, though, that creativity happens to the "prepared mind"...that a certain amount of factual knowledge must be the basis on which we move on. Creativity is poorly understood, and not really measurable. Much easier to test "factual" knowledge, and this is why ed continues as it does, plus it's an industry, a very expensive one at that, and an awarder of arguably many degrees with no practical value. :) Jack
I just want you to know, my professor showed this video to my class the other day. Just thought you'd think that was pretty cool. If i made vlogs just for fun, I'd be pretty shocked to know one was actually used in a classroom. Im an Elementary Education major and it was in my "Technology in Education" class and your video was incredibly relevant. I loved it! :)
So what if Prof. Grimson (shout-out) doesn't know your name? You came to university to LEARN.
These "facts" aren't just facts. They are the partial sum of the knowledge that humans have accumulated for thousands of years. Furthermore, in and out of university, you apply the facts you know to the real world.
It's true that you can read up the same content a math major does for 4 years in one year with discipline and a computer, but the math student isn't just a math student.
I think you miss several points. First of all is that most people do not end up working in a job relevant to their degree. So why bother? Because having a degree demonstrates to an employer that you are capable and willing to work to meet a goal. That is the ONLY value of many degrees. Have you ever seen a want ad for a philosopher?
i agree what with your saying but school is only for a base for life and a teacher told me so. school is only there to prepare you for the world around you, and you might learn somthing along the way that is usefull but normally not. i aspire to be an artist do you really think that i need to learn any sort of math or even us history (but dont get me wrong its interesting and i enjoy it) to become an artist, no of corse not. but i might need it (MIGHT) but until then i scribble down facts.
I can't get the same thing from the internet as I can from my University.
I do a Physics degree, there is no value on the importance of being able to do experiments, being able to discuss ideas with Professors face to face and having access to huge research facilities.
There is no replacement for the use of Universities when you are doing sciences and Engineering. Your approach is from a subject where known of these things are important, which is why you view it as pointless.
Well said, Dan Brown. Universities don't teach anything at all and are useless (as I type this on my computer that was created by university educated engineers). BRB gotta go to my university educated doctor. I hope university educated scientists will be able to find a cure for my disease that is killing thousands of people each year.
Like, o my Goooood. This might just be the most education some babyboomers ever got in the 21st century lol. Creativity is what makes the world decide if you belong or not... I am learning this in New Mexico where their are many unwilling to change, but want conformity...wow.
Wow you sound just like Glenn Beck. And your attitude, while may convince people who have little college experience and are not working professionals, comes across as ultimately arrogant and self-deluded.
Well, I hope the Youtube thing works out for you. Because you're going to be in a world of hurt pretty soon with that arrogance of yours.
As an educator and self-proclaimed futurist, I agree with your perspective on education and society. Whether K-12 or college, education is primarly about memorizing and regurgitating facts. I often ask my colleagues when education will catch up with the 21st Century. Our closest estimate is around the 23rd Century! Traditional thinkers won't understand, but I get it! I'm sure that you will do well with/without a college degree. After all, most billionaires never completed college!
@9988tj I think that starting your argument with 'dumbass' pretty much makes your argument not worth reading. But he didn't just drop out of school to make a youtube video. Nobody in their right mind would do that. He's smart enough to know that's an idiotic idea. Plenty of jobs are accepting employees without college degrees. No, they're not just fast food joints.
Word brother, my story is very similiar. Have you looked into the Venus Project? I think that the revolution/evolution of the human race that you are talking about has been happening and, the 21st century is going to look very interesting. Check out the Venus Project man, it talks about teaching our children how to think critically and do the very thing that you talked about here. And much more than that of course.
It's nice that you have an opinion JimothyJ, but given that we're discussing education, you should know that a 'younge audiance' is more commonly known as a 'young audience'.
I came here after watching the thunderf00t video. And I have to agree, this video is not just wrong but irresponsible to tell this to a younge audiance
I quit listening when you said you were a drop-out. Society says to adapt you need not only an undergraduate degree but a graduate degree as well. You are keeping yourself from the aristocracy because you will not have access to a JOB which allows for all that "free" information you're talking about.
4:46 SOCIETY DOES CARE ABOUT HOW MANY FACTS YOU CAN MEMORIZE!!! why would it be so much easier to get a job with a college degree? it shows that you can work hard to memorize! this video is so dumb! dont get me wrong, you have made some good points in the past, but this one is just a bunch of random bullshit! 6963 people cant think for themselves and just agree with you because you sound intelegent
what a giant moron, this person have NO understanding of the importance of education. Just look up the facts ? what the fuck is he talking about. Instead of studying molecular biomedicin, as i am, i could just look up the facts and it would lead to ... well the development of NO new medicine, because i am only getting information that is already there, and i have NEVER gone to a test that involved only remembering facts, is has ALL been about applying your knowledge to solve problems. IDIOT
I feel my time at college was well worth the money. It opened me up to new ideas. I respect the attempt at an "outside-the-box" solution, but do you have any research at your disposal to support your assertion that institutionalized education hurts one's education? Pretty much every article I can find supports finding ways to get more people into college. Also, what, ultimaely, is your suggestion? Eliminating colleges/universities? Relying on the internet to educate America's children?
@isisroyalholloway Soo, you are saying that I'll be taught the theory of relativity according Prof. So and So at one university and at the another university it will be according to Prof. What his Name.
Basically I can go out and take two students from two different universities and ask them to define a system and I will get two different definitions? When I say different definitions, I mean different concepts and not different wordings, I just wanted to make that clear.
Wow, I thought he would realize that the internet does not always give the correct information. At least at an institution you can be guaranteed that you will be getting the right information, that is based on facts and evidence, and not of someone trying to promote their own agenda or opinions.
I guess that this is what one can expect from one that does not take their education seriously.
I would LOVE to hear what this guy's education consists of today having dropped out of school. What are you learning? How are you learning it? How are you changing the world? What results have you seen? Answering these questions and others might give educators a place to go to rather than just telling us we need to change to stay relevant.
All of this according to the guy posting in his mom's basement. This line of thinking is nothing new, teachers have been altering methods over the last ten years. However, Dan has been the first person to have the time to make a video. Thanks!
@cewfms6 Yes, there are more useless states than Nebraska, and not all of the people who live there are idiots. You seem to be of above-average intellect. That being said, I'd still chose a third world country over Nebraska. :)
This idiot thinks "facts" are readily available and decipherable on the internet. All the internet is full of; is porn and opinions, like this useless one.
@LogicIsLogical one day you'll get outside into the "real world" where words on paper mean shit. Employers want references, volunteer experience, and social interaction.
You cannot get any of those online.
Not to mention you cannot get ANY experience where apprenticeship is required (ie: woodworking, welding, plumbing, etc)
Reading about a subject does not make you a expert at it, let alone "learned".
@LogicIsLogical How about any professional degree like medicine or engineering. Reading Webmed does not make you a doctor or even close to a surgeon. Reading Wikipedia will not teach you how to design a bridge or build mechanical devices. pt1
pt 2 Maybe the argument is for people that take courses in the liberal arts where the degrees are worth less in the real world than the paper they are printed on but when it comes to technical degrees or diplomas you won't get there by dropping out. The only thing you will learn from Google Maps is how to get to the closest welfare office
@superdaves104 but technical things like Networking, IT, and Computer Programming are learned best via experience, not instruction. It's like being a pilot (not one, but still). Even though pilots go through a huge amount of course instruction, there is still nothing that can truly prepare them for flying the plane. Like Dan said, courses normally involve programming to a goal, solving an independent problem, and other things like that. The education is nothing compared to real-world experience.
@superdaves104 You're ignoring what the internet will be like in the future. I think that a more technologically advanced internet could provide an effective education. And I completely disagree with the notion that a liberal arts degree is useless it the real world. It's arguably less useful for getting a job and making money, but when it comes to advancing one's understanding of the world in general, and how we should behave in it, I believe it's very useful.
however... i see you lack of education in this video. I am a mexican studying in the US, last year I took AP English in which I was taught how to persuade. I was taught that I was to support my argument. You however did not support your´s in any way. You provided us with an example. Which works in this case, it is effective. Never the less you argument is fatuous. It was not provided with a course of action, a solution, a suggestion. We are left with a question "what the hell do I do now?"
@iPlayWithTheSystem Well, you clearly didn't study the English language closely enough because any reasonably abled individual that claims to have studied English and care enough to criticise another individual's ability and grasp of the aforementioned would fully understand that "your's" never has an apostrophe and should be expressed as simply 'yours'. Also, I don't think you quite understand how Dan works. His ultimate goal is to express his opinion and evoke thought, not persuade.
@iPlayWithTheSystem He supported it, but this doesn't mean it was done well. If you had some "high" education and learned to persuade people you would put your argument nuanced (I'm not persuaded, so you failed). Btw, support this argument: You however did not support your's in any way.... (Ironic, you didn't support yours either).
A example of his support would be: I went to the university of Nebraska.... +the rest of his support
Before you reply: I didn't say he used a good support.
Well, im in middle school right now (7th grade), and let me just say something my history told me. "The most important thing you will learn here, is how to make decisions. All of this information you learn in school is useless; the world is moving fast and my job is to prepare you for that world."
I'm not sure what moronic college or pseudo-course you took, Dan. But if you were in any sort of educational institution worth a damn you would know that facts being given out is one side of it. I do Computer Science where, yes, we're given facts, but rather than a straight reading the lecturer will take time to explain the concepts. We have practicals and labs where we can work on this stuff, train ourselves in this art. You WOULD have such a warped view if you slept through half the classes.
Hello Dan. What are you doing at the moment? Are you still educating yourself via the internet? I am an educator who always integrated ICT and online resources in my lessons, but you won't believe the battles we have in schools, e.g. YouTube is blocked, kids are not allowed to use their own mobile devices like phones or iPods, administrators tell teachers not to blog etc.etc. etc. So much so that, like you, I am contemplating to drop out. Hope you are well. :)
This was on the recomendations of his new video (the one asking us to vote on him for the "oscars").
And I got nostalgic so i clicked it. I guess in a few months i will remember this channel as "That show I used to watch that helped to put things i perspective".
Brownies! Pogotribe! We are dying! We can still prevail! Let's help Dan!
I do a university course in England and we get hefty contact time with personal tutors and the course is extremely forward thinking and innovative it being a Music Informatics course multi-disciplinarily combining the latest computer music, artificial intelligence and software engineering technologies. You have a really good point Dan but just remember it depends where you go to uni and what course you do.
I am very impressed with your vision on this matter. I have been working in education for over 10 years and for various reasons it is hard for educational institutions to subject themselves to change. Although I have seen some excelent examples of reform, the majority stays behind.
Someone has to validate the information floating around on the internet and that takes an educated person. You sound like a very intelligent person. Your talents would be better used to garner the power of the internet to educate our youth, to teach them about being safe, and to teach them how to discern between truth and fiction. The "101" classes that you describe have been passe for at least 40 years. I lament the fact the the University of Nebraska is still using this forum.

I agree we need to educate on how to safely get accurate information not the information itself. How to use the information to be more creative and improve upon it, not memorize it. We need to be contributors more than consumers of information!
the fact that limitless information is at our fingertips isn't necessarily good. having to actually DIG for information is good for ze brain. don't get me wrong, i love the internet, but i personally feel that our societal dependence on it is causing societal short attention-spans..
Education is not only information. And somebody had to teach you how to express your ideas in a coherent way, and led you to reflect about your present situation as an human being... Or all of that came only by reading on internet?
You fucking expect me to read seven text books about science and become like Jimmy Neutron ? Good, that's alot better than going to harvard. I can blow up the school by using a deathray i learned to built by reading alot of crappy books at the library.... which i got for free.
University of Nebraska sounds dumb. I had a handful of exceptional professors that provided me with critical thinking skills that transcended the subject area they taught.

HansDerFiedler 1 week ago
@fictionrules Seriously, I agree with the part that education is vital in today's world, but self education is crap. You cant teach yourself what you yourself dont know. Maybe how to fingerpaint. But not advanced topics in physics or computer science or writing. And information on the internet is not always reliable, not always easy to understand and the more difficult the subject the scarcer the information.
DannyIsaac1 2 weeks ago
@DannyIsaac1 Did I miss the bit where he mentions anything about self education in this clip at all? I don't think he is a proponent of self education. More that he is saying that any idiot can teach themselves facts, but an institution has to do MORE than just that.

Reading stuff online is not.
reepicheep90 1 month ago
@reepicheep90 the things i've learned about physics / biology / aerodynamics were all learned outside a classroom and on my own time... why did i not take classes at the university? because at the university it would take me 600 bucks in a book and tuition for 1 class just to have some other guy tell me to read the book. half the teachers now just have you read the book and then IF your confused they correct you. i learned to fly outside a classroom... so i guess you dont trust my skills.
gowill2 1 month ago
@gowill2 i just take the classes now just to get through the hoops for my aviation science degree... but there are far too many people who think a university is magic... and they take the class and never really understand anything theyve been told... i've learned a TON through google, through peer reviewed articles i found ON google. the internet just allows me to find information . internet =/= bogus information... infact i find it has better information than my books.
gowill2 1 month ago
@gowill2 Yes, education needs a reform. But still, you learned to fly with a human teaching you. That's what needs to be kept. It wasn't you alone with the Internet. We need to reform teaching but keep it all about human interactions. We also need to keep valuable methods of assessment and certification. I would not trust your skills if you taught yourself to fly and never got certified through any institution.

I find your argument flawed. While the world of information is changing at blinding speeds and the lecture model is inefficient on an individual basis, the internet is not capable of what you say. Information is not regulated, so students who depend on it as their main source are getting a lot of wrong information. Also, while synthesis is more important than memorization, you need to fully understand information (which means memorizing it) before you can create new ideas based on it.
katpiercemusic 1 month ago
@katpiercemusic I agree with your comment. I get where the he is coming from because the information age is new, but schools integrate it now. I'm going to medical school and MOST of our info comes from online. Also, as others mentioned, being creative is important, but you cant "create new ideas" without learning what you're talking about first. Do you want a doctor that doesnt know how your body works but has a new idea for how to fix you? Or medicine from no chemistry classes?

Surely an education is meant to equip one with the perspective and skills to discriminate between facts and nonfacts (and true facts and untrue facts), and to further deal with those facts in an intellectually and/or professionally useful way? I can see that I'm not the only person identifying this as a disgruntled (if good-hearted) strawman argument; but I am surprised to see so many people shaking their heads in agreement...

RelaxBrodysseus 3 months ago 2
Dan you should go check out Joshua Foer. The fact that society no longer gives any value to the amount of knowledge we can store in our minds, or is moving in that direction anyway, is not necesarily a good thing. Also, I think good schools teach you not just facts but the right facts, something hard to find in the information age where you can easily drown in facts not knowing which to pick. They can also teach you abilities, which are not the same as facts.

My problem with Dan's argument is that you need discipline to achieve - something that is instilled in you by others. You need someone to make you do the work, and if everyone just sits at home on their computers, they will not be motivated or disciplined.
derwos 3 months ago
@derwos Dan's not saying people should stop going to school and get what they need from the internet; he's saying that schools need to adapt their teaching methods to that of the modern age. Instead of teachers shoving facts down students' throats, they should teach in a way that allows students to find information on their own. We don't need to KNOW information; we need to know how to FIND information. Having this in schools will give us the tools we need to succeed, but still have discipline.
weasley1497 3 months ago
@weasley1497 That I would agree with. Why has this video gotten so much resistance?
derwos 3 months ago
Your argument is invalid. Not every degree is a game of remember-the-fact, I guarentee you there is a correlation between students who do well and those who understand the fundimental ideas behind a subject and its examination. You cheapen years of hard work of many individuals and the reason why degrees are so highly valued is that while the content your learning may not be applicable directly to your industry the signal you give to employers is that you can perserveer and work at a challenge..

Okay dan so I agree with you on somethings. I agree that the education system has many flaws. :) Jack

RealFreak69 9 months ago
Wow, I thought he would realize that the internet does not always give the correct information. At least at an institution you can be guaranteed that you will be getting the right information, that is based on facts and evidence, and not of someone trying to promote their own agenda or opinions.
I guess that this is what one can expect from one that does not take their education seriously.
RealFreak69 9 months ago
I would LOVE to hear what this guy's education consists of today having dropped out of school. What are you learning? How are you learning it? How are you changing the world? What results have you seen? Answering these questions and others might give educators a place to go to rather than just telling us we need to change to stay relevant.
RobertBorgersen 9 months ago
All of this according to the guy posting in his mom's basement. This line of thinking is nothing new, teachers have been altering methods over the last ten years. However, Dan has been the first person to have the time to make a video. Thanks!

@cewfms6 Yes, there are more useless states than Nebraska, and not all of the people who live there are idiots. You seem to be of above-average intellect. That being said, I'd still chose a third world country over Nebraska. :)

College education is NOT THE WAY TO GO!
I have a video proving that college education is unnecessary, irrelevant and doesn't promise more money, better career, NOTHING!
Check it out to see the real truth.

This idiot thinks "facts" are readily available and decipherable on the internet. All the internet is full of; is porn and opinions, like this useless one.
BenjaminFranklin2u 10 months ago
@BenjaminFranklin2u Ready to test that theory?
Name ONE thing that I would need a separate secondary "Education" to know of... ONE thing from ANY subject.
I will show you where to get the information ONLINE...FOR FREE on "YouTube"(besides advertisements of course).
Institutionalized education =/= more knowledge.
The Internet forum taught me more then institutionalized education ever has or ever could.
Institutionalized education = pretty on a resume, that's the only reason I'm getting one.
LogicIsLogical 10 months ago
@LogicIsLogical one day you'll get outside into the "real world" where words on paper mean shit. Employers want references, volunteer experience, and social interaction.
You cannot get any of those online.
Not to mention you cannot get ANY experience where apprenticeship is required (ie: woodworking, welding, plumbing, etc)
Reading about a subject does not make you a expert at it, let alone "learned".
BenjaminFranklin2u 10 months ago
@LogicIsLogical How about any professional degree like medicine or engineering. Reading Webmed does not make you a doctor or even close to a surgeon. Reading Wikipedia will not teach you how to design a bridge or build mechanical devices. pt1
superdaves104 9 months ago
pt 2 Maybe the argument is for people that take courses in the liberal arts where the degrees are worth less in the real world than the paper they are printed on but when it comes to technical degrees or diplomas you won't get there by dropping out. The only thing you will learn from Google Maps is how to get to the closest welfare office
superdaves104 9 months ago 9
@superdaves104 but technical things like Networking, IT, and Computer Programming are learned best via experience, not instruction. It's like being a pilot (not one, but still). Even though pilots go through a huge amount of course instruction, there is still nothing that can truly prepare them for flying the plane. Like Dan said, courses normally involve programming to a goal, solving an independent problem, and other things like that. The education is nothing compared to real-world experience.
audiobahn404 7 months ago
@superdaves104 You're ignoring what the internet will be like in the future. I think that a more technologically advanced internet could provide an effective education. And I completely disagree with the notion that a liberal arts degree is useless it the real world. It's arguably less useful for getting a job and making money, but when it comes to advancing one's understanding of the world in general, and how we should behave in it, I believe it's very useful.

Here is south west Nebraska,
the real world is learning to live without money, make it ourselves, grow it
harvest it, and step back to get ahead.
sooner or later the G men and corporations will hog up the money,
hard for them to come take your carrot.

however... i see you lack of education in this video. We are left with a question "what the hell do I do now?"
iPlayWithTheSystem 10 months ago
@iPlayWithTheSystem Well, you clearly didn't study the English language closely enough because any reasonably abled individual that claims to have studied English and care enough to criticise another individual's ability and grasp of the aforementioned would fully understand that "your's" never has an apostrophe and should be expressed as simply 'yours'. Also, I don't think you quite understand how Dan works. His ultimate goal is to express his opinion and evoke thought, not persuade.
Woodsy305 10 months ago

Those words currently motivate the most.

How can anyone NOT like this video?
The future is already here, and we should revolutionize the way our children get their education.
If in doubt, please check the RSA TED talk by sir Ken Robinson, or watch the video's of Sugata Mitra.
We all want our children to have the best education, fitting to their future. This is they way it should be done.

I agree we need to educate on how to safely get accurate information not the information itself. How to use the information to be more creative and improve upon it, not memorize it. We need to be contributors more than consumers of information!

the fact that limitless information is at our fingertips isn't necessarily good. having to actually DIG for information is good for ze brain. don't get me wrong, i love the internet, but i personally feel that our societal dependence on it is causing societal short attention-spans..
xlahoorah4 10 months ago
Education is not only information. And somebody had to teach you how to express your ideas in a coherent way, and led you to reflect about your present situation as an human being... Or all of that came only by reading on internet?

You fucking expect me to read seven text books about science and become like Jimmy Neutron ? Good, that's alot better than going to harvard. I can blow up the school by using a deathray i learned to built by reading alot of crappy books at the library.... which i got for free.
