  • very good...

  • this is perfect! dont stop!

  • So after preaching about how to hold a pencil properly, you proceeded to demonstrate sketching by holding the pencil like you write. Good Job.

  • @Malorie001 you are wrong. When you see closely - he changes the holding of the pencil to make it more comfortable. See - 9:04

  • what happend to using a electric sharpener..?0.0

  • nice draw

  • oh while watching this i had exactly the same pencil in my hand as u on start of the video :)

  • I use only 2 finger to draw, does it matter? D:

  • he's so awesome

  • I was looking for some online lessons abt sketching n I found ur's.. ..

m working on ma sketching skills n m not tat good on it.... just messed-up m new project..:/

  • i like your videos... they very helpful...thank you :)

  • Too bad charcoal pencils are nearly impossible to sharpen without them breaking and the lead falling out.

  • Now why didn`t they teach like us this at school?

  • @kitty3309 Illuminati duh.

  • @kitty3309 YEAH. My teacher just told our class to observe the face shape, and then she told us to look at how she draw and she expects us to draw very well. =_=

  • thank u teaching us how to draw

  • You're videos are fantastic. I have very much respect for you. Thank you for taking the time to create, narrate and provide the detail and all of these clips. Thank you.

  • sweet. thank you! I got those mechanical pencils from my dad and I wasn't really sure what to use them for.

  • Great series.

  • 10 minutes of someone sharpening a pencil.

But it was the best video I have seen today!

    Well done and thank you!

  • Right handed drawing. I guess left-handed people just reverse it.

Like my art teacher used to say. "I don't know how to teach left-handed students, so just watch what I do with the normal students and you figure it out."

  • wht kind of paper do you used sir?

  • hey there, you migth be interested in this Drawing competition:

    Best Regards.

  • "this is not sketching, this is wasting your eraser" hahaha

this video was a big help. :) thanks

  • This has been very helpful. Thank you!

  • lol! I love the contrast in artistic opinion, if you guys see the advertisement beside this video that belongs to "Five Pencil Method", check that out, seriously. That guy is a badass artist, and he always suggests using as sharp a pencil as you can get.

Not to argue Eclectic, he's probably the best artist I've ever seen.

  • like it...

    thanks alot

  • i have that exact brand of pencil

  • your my hero, i love you

  • bahaha i was wondering why i was having trouble holding the pencil i was like this is werid

then i relised i wasnt holding in my drawing hand ^_^

  • where do you buy your art supplies?

  • thank you

  • 7:25 is made my day

I actually did what he said that was wrong. And now I do the right thing.

"This isn't sketching.. This is... Waisting and eraser."

  • thanks for the education, well done

  • Man this dudes a great teacher :P

  • Just wanted to let you know that the time you put into these videos does not go unappreciated. Thanks!!!

  • slope of the tangent line of the curve xD

  • lol when you ereased the edge i started to blow.

  • @92aleksandar ew i think you should have worded that a bit differently it looks a bit wrong lol

  • @mariofanoo1 oooh... now when you mention it... :)

  • Thats a good idea with the paper and not letting it smuge. i draw with charcol and my hand drags and makes it messy :D

  • This is good stuff! Thanks!

  • what pencils do you recemend?

  • watch previous videos

  • @fabeybaby3 HB or lighter for traces and light work, 2b for your basic darker tones and 6b for really dark parts of the drawing... my 2 cents.

  • lol ur handwriting is not messy =]

  • My dad sharpens pencils like that and he doesn't even draw :)

  • When I was a kid (3rd grade or so) I sharpened my pencils like that with my scissors.

My teacher flipped her lid. She thought I was crazy, or I was going to accidentally hurt myself. I had to miss recess. :<

  • Hahaha,

so did I, except i wasn't ever caught fortunately lol.

  • Lucky. XD

I did it when I got home, JUST to be rebellious.

  • I sharpened like that in kindergarten because i didn't have a pencil sharpener

  • Does it really matter how you hold a pencil? I have no coordination using the tripod grip. I hold it with my thumb pointer finger and middle finger. Im right handed as well.

  • It's like properly holding a drum stick incorrectly, in the long run it's going to be harder to imitate someone with the proper grip, but of course it can be done.

  • Im also an artist and holding the pencil is different then just writing a letter, it depends if you are drawing or shading, and in what direction. Its not that hard, just do whats best for you. These videos really help!

  • i feal very accomplished that I taught myself like all those techniques XD

  • All the things he told in the video are not that important. Pencil grip, pencil, sharpening etc are things which you can do the way you want.

  • True, but it's also good to learn new ways of doing things, and it's good to practice with them especially (like he said) when it helps you transfer from drawing to painting, or like with the sharpening, it helps you to save lead and get more for your money, just saying.

  • sandpaper? hmmm.. sounds good.. must test!

  • sketch. groups .live. com if anyone wants to share his owns sketches

  • if u can post a video to do isometric sketches of cars etc , it would be helpful for me

  • Thanks for the lesson, Jason. The portion with drawing the tangent lines to discern the angles was very helpful!

  • all of that preparation, and he only managed to draw a squiggle. brilliant.

  • i have the exact same pencils! :D

  • this vid didnt he at thats called a waste of 10 minutes

  • I dont understand how you type.

  • I don't use pencils I use pens

  • yeah right.

  • do to u make cartoons or somethin like that? cuz when i draw cartoons, i mostly use a sharpie like pen. i dont use ball point pens, cuz i kinda hate them!...but sometimes i have to...bummer!

  • iv learned how to deal with the little strokes into large ones it just works for me somehow

  • oh! so thats why you hol your pencil funny! :D

    i get it now :)

  • It is'nt that funny....

  • Im sitting here, drawing with him xD

But way to learn if you ask me.

  • I agree. You have to at least practice.Or take forever to get used to your pencils.

  • "This isn't sketching.. This is... wasting an eraser" LOL xD true..

  • they are the same boxcutters that are used to cut boxes...

  • yeah listen to him "ALWAYS sharpen away from yourself".

i had to learn that the hard way...and blood everywhere!

    nice vid!

  • ... blood everywhere?? uh,.. what were u doing?!!!

  • i was in shop class at school and cut a huge gap in my finger because i was sharpening towards myself. and well it started gushing blood

  • ouch! EEWWYYY! that must have hurt.

  • surprisingly no, it didn't hurt too bad.

  • ewy.

  • NWCTC?

  • i dont know what that is

  • Comment removed

  • Actually, that is not how you are supposed to write, even though public schools teach you that way. You're not supposed to write with your fingers, but with the muscles in your arm (your fingers and wrist should not move at all). It takes practice, but so did learning to write the other way. No offense intended, just letting you know. There are actually guides online that teach you how to write the proper way. Google "paperpenalia handwriting" it should be the first hit =]

  • I didnt know about paperpenalia handwriting thx for sharing about it.

  • You're welcome! =D

  • you can just use a shapanna ? its easier ..

  • i like how you have gone about this tutorial.

tho i still prefer mech pencils. they work better for me, personally. (only partly because i dont have to keep sharpening them ;] )

anyway, 'nuff rambling. nice vid, helpful! thanks dude

  • And at the end, it looks like a old man with shaky hands who can't even held a pencil done it! They don't teach us art, they teach how to waste your time! At last at my school. Hope when i study it'll be better. And sorry if I'm annoying, but I really like art and don't missunderstand that thing with the example of that picture "drawing lines, color them...." Of course we can do better, but they don't give us an exercise wich is not easy. And they don't want it, well that is what they look like.

  • well, at school, we would never be allowed to have a box cutter. But there, we could use something else, or am I wrong? Why is art at school so ....well, bad? they don't tell us something about holding a pencil, they don't tell us how to sharp it...they don't do anything if we want to be serious! And besides, shitt, we are 15! We want to DRAW and don't want to make some lines and color them with red or I don't know.

  • if thats the case go to your teacher if he doesn't listen go to your principal

  • I call Sketching, "Chicken Scratch" OwO/

  • ive always loved led holders

  • What if someone who does'nt have talent, but he keep practice in drawing, if he can drawing pictures as same as who have talent ??

  • well, a talent always start at practice...

  • why would you want to draw like those who have talent or anyone for that matter....the important thing is if you want to draw and love doing it, then you just draw....practice, sweat and reap the fruits....forget talent...the real talent lies in how dedicated you are to your art...

  • amen

  • indeed

  • @allard999 Hear hear. Pretty good speech.

  • @allard999 beautifully said. ( i feel the same way with school! jk lol)

  • @allard999 Yes, that is a bit true. If you love drawing, then it's not really important if you're good or not. But some people want to get better, and that's why there's art school's and online things like this. If you create talent, then you can be proud of what you draw. Drawing a scribble simply because you love drawing isn't much to be proud of.

  • @allard999 I guess it's all a matter of doing it profissionally, if that's what you want. If not, then why watch the video in the first place?

  • drawing need talent, true or false ??

  • drawing complicated pictures needs talent , in that case it's true but for simple pictures is false

  • true

  • well, a talent starts at practice.... practice remains the main ingredient of being called a TALENTED person..

so drawing needs practice and not talent...

  • and you need to have the interest in learning/practising it ;)

  • hehehe... right... :3

  • This really helped a lot! Thanks!

  • mechanical pencil's suck

  • my all life frustration, i cant draw anyhing thats why i had to studied laws, otherwise I would chose finearts.

  • vaprsnake is noob

  • lol this isn't sketching.. this is wasteing an eraser xD

  • You make a fine point there, thanks for the great tip.

  • great video ...thank u a lot

  • whao, youre real professional! i usually sketching with my automatic pencil 'coz i don't ve any sketching pencil in my house.and it turned out that the sketch looks kinda messy n really rough, i don't really care about that before, 'coz that was just some kind of practicing, but now, i will go buy some sketching pencil:P anyway, u're just too good at drawing!

  • i naturually hold my pencil by gripping it with all 5 fingers

  • AMAZING!!!!

  • This lesson helped me a lot ^^ Thanks. Of course i'm going to watch the rest of it ;)

  • Dude, can you do a vid on how to maintain a character through different angles and views? Like what they do in a comic? Tips, secrets, anything.

Thanks man. Keep up the good work.

  • Great video series

  • I'm a lefty, and I hold my pencil in a very weird way. I don't even remember how I hold it. I have to pick up a pencil and start writing to remember how I hold it when I write. I am also an amature artist, : ).

  • ur hand wrighting isnt meesy its poop!!!

  • If i took a blade into school, i think i won't be going back. Haha

  • that pencil tip is very cool and realy smart

  • my design teacher would kill you for loosing the point. i have been using ONLY sharp pencils for about 3 years now and i got used to it. And a drawing actually looks cooler when finished... looks very designish but not to artsy. Depends on what look you're.. looking for :))

  • may i ask where it was you studied art? i mean it with all do respect i actually like your techniques and i need to find an alternative because i used to attend art center in pasadena but i dont anymore because of financial situations. but i would apreciate your response it would be really helpful. great videos by the way.

  • THanks...:)

  • I'm a fan of the clutch pencils.

  • o_o

  • what the hell? That guy is an awesome artist and he can be an artist however he wants to be. The technique an artiests uses is not supposed to be criticed (sp?). He probabily isn't the best painter and whoever is considered to be the best painter is probabily not eaither cause there are alot of unknown artists out there. so yea... get my point?

  • not really, hendrix plucked strings and made sound, just like everyone else.

  • jealous?

  • The Smudges happen to me because I write with my left hand. That's why I use 2H pencils, they are very light, and don't smudge.

  • I have a lead pencil holder from Checoslovakia. Round 25 yrs old :)

  • oh, and great videos by the way. i like the personal philosophy you include, it shows that there is more to art than medium on paper.

  • about pencil holding technique: he is saying that he prefers one way MOST OF THE TIME, but sometimes to achieve a specific detail or style, it is more successful if you hold the pencil another way. ultimately, you hold a pencil or any other tool in a way that is most comfortable to YOU. over the years, artists have found many ways to hold a pencil and are sharing their discoveries and what works best for them. you are the only person who determines what is best for you.

  • Look at 5:44. He holds the pencil in the middle and you can see the range his hand has got. Then 6:13 - "the propably best way" to hold a pencil blablabla. But then 7:10 the learning how to sketch. He holds the pencil as if he were writing. And that was before 5:44 where he showed that by holding the pencil that way you have a very limited range. Whatever...

  • you said so yourself "PROBABLY THE BEST WAY"

so what's your point? is there a best way?

  • it's not about me or what I think. it's about the artist here. he should say why he did it "wrong" in regard to his own definition... whatever...

  • The way he holds the pencil has nothing to do with anything. He's teaching us to draw, not himself. If he hasn't developed "probably the best way techniques", so what? That doesn't mean he can't show us a better way, even if he doesn't use it or is use to or prefers another method.

  • I can answer this. I'm drawing for the camera in an unusual way. The surface is flat which is a lot different than using an easel or and angled drafting table. The "probably best way" is better suited for an easel or drafting table.

  • Very interesting tips! :)

I like the part where you show how to hold the pencil.

I like draw, too. So this helps me a lot.

    Thanks!

  • Yeah. And the next second he's holding it the "wrong" way again...

  • ???

  • I've just started to learn to draw today (I can't attend classes, so I'm relying solely on 'how to draw' books and videos like this). I have to admit, it's pretty interesting and informative

  • i LOVE your videos...

    i learn SOOOOO much!!!!

  • I was not aware that videos could be homosexual 8'D

  • looks like my hand writing

  • Carol never wore her safety goggles. Now she doesn't need them.

  • lol?

  • Very interesting, very informative.

  • lol "this isn't sketching, this is wasting an eraser"

  • your hand writing is like mine...i call it sketchers writing xD

  • i think you are a script writer.right?

  • thanks for upload!

    =D

  • i suck at scince

  • it seems like you suck at spelling too lmao

  • what kind of paper is best for drawing?

  • to me, it doesnt really matter.

  • i like rougher paper rather than normal copier paper

  • ha, karandash, russian word for pencil! But, anyhow, great videos, exactly what I was looking for, thanks so much for taking the time to do these!

  • this is exactly what i was looking for....great videos man, thanks for posting, awesome teacher.

  • every artist i know has messy handwriting, including me, although i dont consider myself a true artist

  • hehe :P i have messy writing 2 o.o ....

  • I got a better sharpener, hahaha

  • "this isnt sketching... this is wasting your eraser..."

  • Thanks for the close-captioning, moron.

  • I said the same thing like PeinItachi, and he received a thumb up, so I guess you thumbed my comment down, because you dont know what I'm talking about, PROBABLY because you HAVEN'T even seen the video yet.

    so please.

watch it instead being a jerk.
