If you want two characters to be romantically involved, all you need is a few minutes of screen time and a little subtext. The point is that there was an emotional connection. Typically, fans just build off of that with head canon. Although I agree that its kind of strange for any pair to just randomly come and go so quickly....
It's wacked out, but I think we're all forgetting something here: Kaworu isn't human, and it's not out of the question that, due to being an Angel, his and Shinji's relationship developed so quickly because it was supernatural. Not to mention, Shinji is starved for ANY kind of positive attention, and someone in that state of mind is far more susceptible to become accepting of such a relationship quicker.
I actually really like Kaworu and Shinji as a couple, but the relationship did progress too fast and unrealistically. Kaworu is still my favorite character from NGE, though.
@BeybladinKayleen i don't know if i agree--i've witness a shit ton of relationships progress super fast; me and my last gf met on a train, hung out the next day and became an official couple--though i learned that relationships that build at such a speed isn't always good lol

Between the long elevator ride in episode 22 and this scene, Shinji having Kaworu clenched in his fist for that long minute was by far the more effective; the latter was just awkward and it isn't in Rei to give pause in broaching a difficult subject, while the former adds weight to just how conflicted emotionally Shinji is. He clearly doesn't want to do it, but he's confused as to what he SHOULD do.
I think thats its great that shinji is "experimenting" with his sexuality :D but....its kinda wierd that they made the relationship last only for like a day or two, and how fast the relationship was going, you know what I mean?

I actually consider the relationship between Kaworu and Shinji entirely justified. Let's take a second to think about it. Misato has also been kind, yeah, but she's older. Touji, he's guilty as hell about, and Kensuke's never really talked to him. Asuka... is Asuka, Rei's an icecube. Kaworu's the only person his age (sorta) that has been outright kind to him. To a 14-year-old depressive kid that carries the weight of the world literally on his own shoulders, that's pretty big, aye?
I feel like this show did such a good job developing characters and relationships, but Shinji and Kaworu just made no goddamn sense. =/ Dude, you've known this kid for like two days. @pkduexmachina : Yeah, this is from the director's cut version that has the preview for End Of Eva's episode 25. These were released after End Of Eva, and made so that if people wanted, they can watch End Of Eva after episode 24 instead of the original 25, and 26. EoE are like Director's Cuts of 25, and 26 but longer obviously.
@Larrylarp : Many people have said that the original dubbed Kaworu is better than the director's cut dub, and I agree with them. Try finding episode 24 of the original, and see if you change your mind. The director's cut was re-dubbed.

I liked the elevator scene but this is just unnecessary. I wasn't talking about his voice, though I thin this version is very good as well. All Eva dub voices are way better than the original ones.
All in all, it's still probably my favorite episode.

Kaworu came into Shinji's life at a time when he felt he had no one to turn to. Kaworu understood him, and seemingly had all the answers. He opened up to him so much because he felt so distant from everyone else and in need of someone to have some sort of meaningful interaction with. I do think introducing him earlier will make Shinji's feelings of betrayal all the more powerful though.

That Elevator scene is the one where I wished they would keep it as is, and just add some "fly me to the moon" music in the elevator. I just felt it was like real life. You, and someone you know in the elevator not talking, and then all of a sudden someone says something random.

He was injured after Bardiel took over Unit 03, and Shinji had to destroy it with him inside.
