The Jesuits were considered the font of "conspiracy" till about the time of the Dreyfus Affair (set up by the Jesuits for which reason they were kicked out of France) when the focus came on the jews. Ironic that 40 years ago we could thank the Nixon tapes for revealing the darker side of both him and his associates. But now we can be equally thankful that they help us remember what it was like to have a functioning government, with the Dems & GOP really working together. (Wilbur Mills, btw, whom Nixon refers to by first name, was a Democrat, & Chair of House Ways & Means Committee). Also fascinating that Nixon complains of "troubles with the far right"... if he only knew what was to come!

Nelson Rockefeller was a true patriot and I can only imagine what the Republican party would be had Rockefeller came to the presidency after President Ford. Reagan married the Republicans to the religious wing-nuts, and from then on the Republican party has been dominated by the fundamentalist Christians.
