I worked for a caddy dealership in Oregon in the 70s and I can attest they had their fair share of QC issues, nylon timing gears, water leaks, oil consumption, stuck lifters (town drivers only), primer showing through the paint and windows that flopped around worse than Flipper's tail in a trolling net! This is not to say Lincolns were perfect, they just simply didn't have as many issues...
This was the true riding in style! Luxury today is based on all the silly gadgets a car has. The style is all so generic. I also loved the Brougham interiors in the GM cars in the mid to late 70's...........incredible comfort.
I wrote that Cadillac has outsold Lincoln since 1948. That is a true statement. (Sorry about the typos in the earlier post. I was trying to type and eat at the same time). I liked the dashboard design on the Cadillacs too. It was a more fluid design over Lincoln. I do like the retro look of the Navigator's dashboard though. I have ridden in the 58 Contiental because someone I knew owned one which was in flawless condition. I preferred the 58 Fleetwood though. The interior was more luxurious too.
When I was younger, I always thought that Cadillac was the best. I still do but, I have to admit that Lincoln had some beautiful cars too, as is demonstrated in this video. Now that I am older, I put all American cars into one category and the foreign cars in another because of the state of affairs within our slouching auto market. None of the newer cars will EVER approach the ride comfort of either the 70s Lincolns or Cadillacs though. What a HUGE loss for the world. If the young only knew.
I don't know, my family owned a 73 Mk IV when I was young (like 6 or 7), and I remember it being a pitiful sight. Maybe it was just not kept up, I was too young to be aware of such concerns. I just remember cracking leather, inside door handles coming apart from the doors, a trunk lock cover that was permanently frozen open, a shifter that had fallen out and was replaced by a vice grip, and other pleasantries. I am just saying what I see here isn't what I remember.
@markch81 Not sure what your post means really any car no matter what make is if it is poorly maintaned will perious from what you have said that is obious your mark IV was not look after.
@heymargaretlook I just happened to notice "Lincoln Mark" and "best upholstery" in a "related videos" list. I just saw that and thought "That's not what my experience was". I was too young to really pay attention to the details, but I know we weren't intentionally abusive to it either. I just remember it as being the 2nd worst car interior I had ever been in.
Addendum: It was a really cool car to me when I was young. We kept it until I was about 11 or so. I have actually considered getting one to restore as a family car before, but it's not the best idea I have had. Besides, I am hard at work on another project. One at a time is the best way after all.
@wolfgangiceclaw No Lincoln EVER came close to the styling of the 59-60 Fleetwood. Lincoln never had an answer to the Fleetwood Talisman either. Lincolns were ALWAYS plagued with mechanical problems too. Cadillac never left you stranded on the side of the road. Lincolns often did. If you know your automobile history, then you would know that Lincoln was a spinoff of Cadillac itself. No lincoln had a nicer button tufted leather interior than Cadillac. None. Cadillac perfected it to the extreme.
@wolfgangiceclaw That is not saying very much. When sitting in the Rolls Royes's rear seat, anyone over 5 feet 10 inches had a problem. The legroom was tight too. Lincoln had the same flaws. It was written about regularly until Lincoln extended the wheelbase in the 1966 model year. The Cadillac had better quality materials too. I think you must mean that Lincoln's grill and that of the Rolls was compared. Nothing else makes sense.
@heymargaretlook No Lincoln EVER had a nicer interior than the 1976 Fleetwood Talisman or the 1979 Eldorado Biaritz with the flawless button tufted leather that STUNNED the mind. Neither Emelio Pucci, Cartier, Givenccy, or Bill Blass ever did it better than the two from Cadillac as described above. Even the Diamond Jubilee paled in comparison. Cadillac reigned supreme! Cadillacs have ALWAYS outsold Lincoln by more than two to one since 1948. That speaks for itself.
@cadrolls1 Your bias shows but I don't mind a good debate why did Cadillac wait till 76 and 79 to do some credible upholstery in your mind what about the other decades? I find 1976 Fleetwood Talisman no contest for simlar upholstery by Lincoln.
@heymargaretlook Cadillacs have always had nice interiors but, to get the best meant buying the Fleetwood. I admit that the junior series were a little plain but, once into the Fleetwood, Lincoln took the back seat in terms of all out comfort. The Fleetwood came standard with the fold down foot rests for the rear passengers up until 1976 when they were dropped after downsizing. No rear seat was ever as comfortable as Fleetwoods. Rolls Royce was tight on headroom and legroom. I've been in a few.
@cadrolls1 Your statement about Cadillac's outsold Lincoln more then 2 to 1 since 48 is so wrong it's laughable. The Mark 3 out sold the Eldorado which it was designed to do and also was voted King of the Hill (The best luxury car on the market) by major motor magazines of the day do some research. Cadillac can not match the Lincoln Upholstery over the decades and as for Lincolns broken down on the side of road and not Cadies come now.
@heymargaretlook Cadillac in general has outsold Lincoln since 1948. You tokk one model, the Mark and placed it up against the Eldorado but, that is deceptive as the brand name Cadillac outsold Lincoln. No mark interior cam close to the 1976 loose cushion button tufted leather found on the Eldorado Biaritz.. It was breathtaking!
@cadrolls1 You have stated Cadillac out sold Lincoln by 2 to 1 since 1948 look at your own statment this is false. Also like i said before Lincoln is the clear winner in upholstery over the decades this video is about upholstery not who sold what but Lincoln have outsold cadillac at different times for different models. I am not against Cadillac and love some there early models they were all classic cars.
These cars did without a doubt have the nicest interior EVER, it looks so comfortable and roomy, i wish i knew what it was like to ride in one of these, i would LOVE to drive one but i don't know if that'll ever happen... :/
Very nice video, thank you for appreciating these cars upholestry as they should be.
That was very well done!! Good for you!! My dad borrowed a 1972 Mark IV many MANY years ago - and the family went on holidays in style. It was the first time I had ever been in a luxury car - and I was hooked.
Cadillac's interior was so generic compared to the Lincoln's. I have a Mark3,4,and 5 and everyone always comment how nice the interiors are compared to the Cadillac's. Thanks for the nice clip.
I had a 73 Continential. I loved the white leather interior, it felt so rich!

fair enough, no offense meant !
to be honest my caddys interior is really quite crappy, so it doesn't really deserve a video !

Ya Cadillacs are so good they were compared to a Rolls Royce....Oh wait!! That was the Lincoln Continental.
Sorry Cadillac guys but the Lincolns of old were the pinnacle of American luxury cars.

I like the silver leather interior on the 1973 model with silver outside with moonroof. My best friend had one. What a GREAT looking car.
