There were many outstanding artists during the 70's and 80's, Pearl Jam was pretty damn good in the 90's as well. Today it seems like almost everything new is corporate created and promoted crap. If you have a marketable look and some remote talent you can be a star and promote cars, perfume and clothing lines, sad but true.
