  • You rock!! I did not expect to see someone 20 years younger than me on this video, but I was definitely blown away by your skills, & confidence in what you're doing. Keep up the great work & I hope to see more videos like this one :)

  • I expect to see this one take over "This Old House" some day...Keep up the great work sweetie...way to go dad!

  • Future shop teacher there. Great video.

  • Great Job Sophia and Dad. Today my grand niece asked me if she could turn a pen. We completed the pen blank and gluing the tubes. Before we continue tomorrow with the turning I wanted to refresh myself since it has been a couple years since I turned a pen. Your video was perfect. Thank you.

  • Great job Sophia. A craftswoman and a teacher in the making.

  • Come on people, their using what they have and it works really well. Safety Safety Safety this is why we have such wimps today. Their not being stupid with it, He's showing/teaching her how to properly use the tools and she's learning very well. Would a handle be nice....sure but thats another project ;P Very nice job Sophia, keep it up.

  • I WANT THAT DAD!

  • The only thing I would like to see, is a handle on the tang of that file you turned into a chisel. I would hate to see her holding it and trip or something, and have that tang go into her. But it's great to see her taking an interest in something like that.

  • I can only hope I have a daughter like yours!

  • Sofia is a beautiful and smart little girl, but her father a great irresponsible for putting dangerous tools in the her hands and expose she to various conditions of accident risk, including landow improvisations, bad example of lack of security

  • @Guidowood Really? Aside from the handle-less tool, there is NOTHING dangerous about anything she or he did in this video. Please, aside from the handle, share your (worthwhile) concerns. You should be happy she is in the shop, and not inside playing with her doll house.

  • bah, here's me commenting before i've even finished the video! but seriously i was that impressed that i started commenting early.

    BUT

as many have pointed out, I was quite horrified with the scraper without a handle... PLEASE for the love of all things beautiful, turn your daughter a tailor made handle to suit her tiny (but dexterous) hands... for her safety as well as those near her when she works her magic.

  • oh, one more comment :D

she seemed to struggle with the weight of her first choice of saw, then switched to a hacksaw.

Have you got a small tenon saw kicking around? or even a Japanese flush cut saw? i'm thinking she may have (as most kids do) struggled with the weight on her first choice to make a good edge.

just my two pence, but hey she still nailed it and it's the end result, not how you get there that counts :)

  • as a father, I'm touched by your daughter getting her hands dirty in the workshop!!! makes me wanna ask the mrs to have more kids! :) my son is nearly 8 now and has zero practical interest nor dexterity! :(

on a more serious note though, I did cringe when she was using the sanding wheel. Not holding a piece steady and even worse, letting it go gave me the shivers thinking she was going to take an 8th inch of her knuckles! :/

  • haha nice kid! good job! keep turning:)

  • That is so sweet! But you guys really should be wearing some dust masks to protect your lungs. The sawdust from the sander and the bandsaw look especially fine. Even with a dust filtration system installed you should still wear masks.

  • god job keep making pens and you well be good at making pen u could even make a pen wit a design on your pen

  • i love it when kids get involved with crafting she will cherish this for ever

  • Thank you. I've not seen kickback on small material such as pen blanks from green woods, but fully agree that a handle would surely provide for necessary safety. At the very least, a throw upwards could be disastrous. The modified file has appropriate temper and holds an effective edge. In reviewing the video, I've duly noted many safety issues and this has been helpful in cleaning up the process so that safety remains a priority. Your comments are much appreciated.

  • As a person who also does hobby turning. I need to make a couple of comments. (A) not only should you NOT be using a couple of mofified files in the first place, (even with added handles,) (B) the 'roughing in' section of your video has the handle of the file aimed directly at Sophia's heart area. I dread to think of the inherent danger. Otherwise, a beautiful child, being taught by an obviously loving father, has made this video a delight to watch. Please, guard her safety.

  • I think that it is fantastic that a little girl would both have the want to make a pen using machines that dwarf her as well as the relationship with her father to learn. Other than that she is just sensational.

    If the rapture happened yesterday,

Would you still be here today,

    Ronnie (Jarhead4God)

  • Goooooooodddddd girl

  • What a video. This absolutely warmed my heart. Sophia is a very smart and beautiful girl. Daddy must be very proud.

  • You are great but PLEASE make a handle for the file that you are using as a turning tool. It is VERY dangerous to have a pointed end of the file towards you in case it grabs . With a wooden handle it won't hurt you if it grabs.

  • omg that waz so kewl HI MR D I KNO U SHOWED THE VID 2 US. SOPHIA IS REALLY SMART! NICE PEN IT CAME OUT PRETTY. I ♥♥THE PEN COLOR!! BUYZ TO MR D

  • Awesome!!! Sophia, when are you going to make a bowl??? Wait, you have probably done that already! Smart girl, way to go......I like the lemon wood pen....beautiful.

  • o man that was so cute, nice video.

  • Sophia...Just got into turning...Im actually waiting for my lathe to come in the mail tomorrow. I've been practicing on my grandfathers lathe for the past few days. YOU DO AWESOME WORK! Keep it up and make some more videos so I can learn some more.

    Take care and have fun!

  • Cute and awesome! GOOD WORK

The pointed end of that tool facing her had me a bit concerned.

  • the sharpening metod. i wouldn't do it like that.. when the chisel gets too hot it goes soft again. and you must to sharp it again and again..

  • @akselsson1

not if it's High Speed Steel

HSS steel (which is what you should be using on such a lathe) as opposed to Carbon Steel needs a much higher temperature before it loses it's temper.

  • Lovely work Sophia, I only learned how to turn a pen last year and I'm really, really, really, really, really old. You make sure you don't fall out with your dad cos he has loads of good gear there and you could be using it to produce really fantastic stuff in a few years time.

    Good Luck,

    Brendan, Ireland
