It chocked me up when Kat during the last run through the gas cloud switched her rad patch, then when she lost her charge stayed until she found it, then came out with them on the other side. The ultimate sacrifice.
I love how McCreary mixes in the percussion. The beautiful brass in this piece mixes perfectly with the militaristic drums at the beginning of the song. And toward the middle, when the drums become more like heartbeats... the perfect mix of styles to depict possibly one of the most moving moments in the entire third season.
Oh man, how many of you didn't pick up on it?!?! Kat represented a young Starbuck: when Kat died Stabuck emerged as a more mature leader who realized that the mistakes she made as the CAG had dire consequences for the rest of the viper/raptor crews!!! BSG forever!!!
And further, Kat brought into the storyline a sense of the cycle of Apprenticeship and Mentorhood, much like the kind found in the work of J Michael Stratzinski.
At the beginning, (at least the start of the show), the conflict was between Col.Tighe and Starbuck. Then, as she grew as a soldier, a professional, a person, etc,
Along came her "Starbuck"; Kat.
Remember how Thrace and Tighe became friends on New-Cap. Maybe they came to understand each other more.
@deesostrom 'cause she was already dead... her patch was black before the switch an she noticed there is no way back anymore as she stood in front of the mirror and her hair fell out. so she did what no one else could do...
I never cry over characters in entertainment media. It never happens. Not in my very favorite movies, games, or shows...save when Adama pulls up a stool to Kat's deathbed and wonders with her about the daughter he never had...
The one thing I couldn't stand about Kat's character was her yelling. Everything else was fine but whenever she decided to raise her pitch it was awful.
I think the most compelling scene of that episode is when Adama looks to be walking off and instead grabs a chair and sits down next to her until the very end. What a leader. Kat was definitely one of the best characters in the show
i know this sound meen, but i wished starbuck stayed dead. i hated how in startrek they killed of people then brogh them back later on. if she had stayed ded it would have proven that charator shealds do not egsest. they all redy had a habit of killing of side charators, ( kat, bomber (x6) calle, billy, duala, gata, zerk)
@MrWooaa Yes, it sucked, that she become some sort of supernatural something. The most terrible scene for me was, when Dee shot herself, and i felt sorry for Gaeta too. However, i think, that in such a cruel world, when the human race is on the verge of extinction, side characters has to die, or the peolpe wouldt realize, what does it mean: to extinct.
@MrWooaa ok can u spell the names right? its boomer, cally, dualla, gaeta, and zarak. and starbuck is a good dynamic character and she is needed in the series. the deatg and coming back to life is a good thing here.
@olive12121 Remember when starbook was like frik this tooster, and then lie wanted to have so much sex, but then odomo was all NU UH NOT IN MY HAUS. God I love batelstare galacticus.
@MacEwanMouse should i bother trying to spell check that? or should i just classify you as ignorant and//or blind for not seeing your keyboard and/or not being a true fan of battlestar galactica

I had my girlfriend listen to this song without any context and asked her after to use 3 words to describe it. She said: brave, sad, war. Truly a testament to mccreary's ability to reflect the emotions/concepts of the narrative with music alone. Respect.
One of the best episodes in the series. Kat's sacrifice was perfect and redeemed her character. The music was perfect...made The Passage one of my all time favs.
For some reason, the idea of the runner doing what she was meant to do struck a chord. The phrase, "the fall of Hermes" kept running through my head. In her shady past she was a smuggler, and now she ran her final cargo.
I liked Cat so much. Her flaws only made her cuter. And then she had to die slowly and painfully. At least she went out with great dignity. Unlike certain other characters. :-(
Believe it or not I just recently began to watch Battlestar Galactica after years of hearing of how great of a show it was. The Passage is my favorite episode because it sums up the whole show in one scene. Where we see Kat making the ultimate sacrifice for the lives of thousands. Seeing her in Caprica know makes me want to wish that she is playing the role of her own grandmother in the show. I think that would be cool.
The scene where she exits the Raptor to the applause of the crew, raises her arms in triumph, then loses her balances and topples to the floor. I can't even describe how good that scene was.
This is like the only time a french horn really made a prominent theme, it was amazing that for all characters to give such a noble instrument, it was Kat. BEAR MCCREARY IS GAWD
This is, IMO, the best piece from Galactica. The music tells the entire episode, and haunts it as well. It's full of pride and sadness as Kat's successes are destroyed by her past. It also demonstrates the dignity of her choice to go out "in a blaze of glory"!
Yeah Scar was a great episode. I think Kat and Kara didn't get along because they were so alike. Strong, honourable, confrontational, take no shit alpha-female types.
I always get bored when I watch Scar (excluding the dogfight), but when I look back on it, it's always one of my favorites. Same goes for a lot of other episodes. I don't get it either.
Scar is one of the best episodes. It is all centered around the Viper pilots. I have an uncle who flew A-6 Intruders in Vietnam and he says that even though it is science fiction, it is the closest to real life he has ever seen portrayed. The one pilot exiting the Viper puking after losing his wingman. The nugget asking Starbuck for advice. The pilot calling for help on the radio and everyone muttering advice under their breath and his backup rushing to his aid but knowing they were late.
In retrospect, part of the deeper meaning of the episode "Scar" is that both Kat and Starbuck were themselves deeply scarred by their pasts--which is another way in which they were alike.
Each to their own i guess.A unexpected innocent death of a mother to me is much more sad than a death of what I thought to be an annoying smartass character.I thought Kat as a poor counter part to starbuck
@zeratul1356 yeah i agree. i thought that both deaths were very sorrowful in different ways, kats because we didn't like her and we knew it was coming and how brave she was. cally's because no one saw it coming or knew what really happened
@thegreatchimp i'd argue that starbuck wasn't in a good place in that episode and kat was running off some "extra fumes"...if I remember correctly, starbuck has the chance to blow scar out of the sky but differs to kat due to the weather gauge of the situation...
@olysfinest Fair enough, though the two of them combined don't compare to Colonol Saul Tigh -alcaholic of the year and the gruffest, toughest bastard seen on TV." Sonofabitch!"

this song is the perfect tribute to Kat. It has that heroic vibe, but mixed with tragedy. It greatly matched the scene of Kat's return to Galactica and her passing.
@uberk it's not heroic to die so someone else could live? to save someone from a burning house for instance only for you to die of smoke inhalation? That's the bravest thing a person can do!
well it was supposed to be different. It marked the beginning of a massive change in how things went in the show. And it had to be different to justify the fact that it came from a completely different culture (Earth)
