that sound is forever burned in my brain lol so is it in every other new yorkers...L train has the best service in the city in my opinion 7 line is good too
The interior FIND displays. The R143s uses a plain electronic strip map, while the R160s uses a more up-to-date electronic strip map. Also, the R143s are numbered from 8101-8312.
The flags on the R143s are below the MTA New York City Subway logo instead of above, R143s have double side doors at the ends of the cars, and also, R143s use strip maps instead of FIND displays.
R142 trains from Bombardier uses Alstom motors (same as in the R160 contract) and Kawasaki went with AdTranz motors (now Bombardier) for the R142A. Thats why you hear the different sounds.
The R143 is def my fav rolling stock on the MTA system, they sounds exactly the same as to the trains that drive where i live in Zurich Switzerland, the Siemens RABe 514..
a total of 212 R143s were ordered in 2001-03. they were only meant to provide extra service on the L, but they couldn't keep up with fast growth of Williamsburg
The R143s and R160s have different sounds when starting and slowing, the American flag is placed below the NYCT logo on the R143, but above it on the R160, the blind end storm doors are one piece on an R143, but two piece on an R160, and the interior side signs are LCD in an R143 but artwork in an R160
AdTranz is no longer around, having been taken over by Bombardier. Therefore, these motors are no longer available since BBD replaced these with their MITRAC motors.
So, when Alstom and Kawasaki partnered for the R160, Alstom of course used their own motors (same as on the R142) and Kawasaki went with Siemens, who also supplies motors for the PATH PA-5 cars.
No, these are built by Kawasaki. The MBTA's Type 8 Green Line cars, which are built by Breda, sound exactly like this as well. All 3 mentioned cars use similar motors and is why they all sound alike.
Because its a 4 car shuttle, appose to the 8 car R42s that are ran on the weekdays because people don't take the M as much on the weekend. And its also because of OPTO. OPTO is one person train operation where the train operator is operating the train and also does the role of the conducter who opens and closes the door. This is why 4 cars are used.
I'll be damned when they say "This is a manhattan bound L express train"
The L train needs more trains on the line.

And also the tail lights weren't LED like the R-160's. Couldn't really tell on this video but did they upgrade them to LED's?

I think they were, I'm not entirely sure.

okay
they replaced the r143's on the L&M with the R160A-1's
so where did the r143's go?
DanTheMan702 3 years ago
The R143s are still on the L and are mixed with R160As. The M on weekends runs R160As full time for OPTO.
MustangFan424 3 years ago
how many R143's are there?
if this is true then they must have had very little R143's

What do you mean they are new? That sound is coming from the propulsion motors. Know what your talking about before talking out of your ass ok? TY :)

got to hear the propulsion.Thank you!
JW72093 4 years ago
those new trains look very cool, hey were they in service in christmas of 2006, because thats when I went to ny
bobby720 4 years ago
Yes they were in service and have been for a few years. You can find them only the L line and on the M on weekends when they run the 4 car shuttles.
