When Rolls was at his peak, the best BJJ fighter for MMA was Ivan Gomez, top student of Carlson Gracie who fought a Vale Tudo match against a Judo Gold Medalist (Olympic) to draw. Gomez got really good because Carlson taught him everything he knew unlike Helio and his sons in Humaita who kept techiniques inside the family.
Rolls was the best fighter in the family at the time. Carlson Gracie and Rolls Gracie brought a much more agressive approach to Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, Plus he died at 32 yrs old, Imagine what he could've acheived if he lived longer....plus the guy that he beat in this video was actually the MASTER of the karate dojo that challanged the gracies in this tournament.....
People say he's great because they know it's someone Rickson used to consider the best in the family. By watching this video without previous info, do you really think he's that good in MMA???????His opponent looks like a untrained pops who was brought in to lose.
@rainriders everyone was crap compared to now, nobody crosstrained so the grappler who could deal with strikes always won, doesnt mean the gracies were anything great,it was the strategy that worked in that situation.
@billysue2 Compared to people now? You mean the people he, and his family trained and taught the art to?? Rickson is done competing. His son KRON GRACIE is one the best grapplers in the world right now.
Yeah but Kimura considered it a victory towards Helio because Helio lasted more than 3 minutes with him. (Helio survived for 13 minutes) but take what you will of it....
There was a substantial weight difference by about 40 kilos or 75 lbs ,Im not sure someone know ?either way a loss is a loss.He just gave helio much respect.
I don't think there was a substantial weight difference. Kimura's fighting weight was 185 to 190 lbs. Helio at the time was about 170 to 180 lbs, I believe.
@saltyseaweed .You were right about what most sources claimed.I read somewhere a long time ago he was 140lbs.5'11 176 which is 80 kilos is not "scrawny"in my opinion which is what people claimed, but you could be right my man.If you have a good source please send a link and educate me please.I dont think he was that big though.
Helio never had a weighed match in his career to my knowledge, so there is no "official" weight for him. 140 pound figure comes from Helio himself in an interview years later, but Helio's recollections have various factual issues. I think you should just judge for yourself from watching Kimura v. Helio video (it's on Youtube). If Kimura is 185, I personally think Helio is reasonably close to that figure.
@saltyseaweed the difference wasnt just the weight difference,a judoka on kimeras level would be an incredible amount stronger, faster and fitter than helio, not to mention far more skilled. He destroyed helio. How the gracies claim that merely surviving that long as a win is a joke.I can survive against lads who are way better, bigger and stronger than me,but id have zero chance of beating them.
I don't know why you directed your commented to me, because I was saying there wasn't much weight difference, if at all. I agree that Kimura completely destroyed Helio.
@jitsujohnny if there was a weight difference of 45 kg and we know kimura was certainly no more than 85,that would make helio 40 kg,around 6 stone. The difference was 20 kg maximum.Kimura was lightyears better than helio.
Like watching national geo as a boa constrictor holding its prey and taking its life away. patiently holding squeezing and watching the prey wriggle to its untimely death... damn those referee's come like park rangers

actually my friend helio was 140 he was much smaller.
jitsujohnny 2 years ago
All the sources I've seen disagree. Kimura says Helio was about 80 kg, which is 180 pounds.
Helio was about 5'11" tall at the time so 140 pounds claim seems incredible. I know many thin 5'6" and 5'5" who weigh more than that.
If you see the video of the match, you can tell Helio was taller.
