Great singing by two glorious bel canto singers: Sutherland & Tourangeau who often sang together in soprano/mezzo duets (such as Anna Bolena and Giovanna Seymour & Norma and Adalgisa). This is quality singing but I wish to God this film were of better quality. You can't barely see anything with the dark color. PS I love how Sutherland slaps Tourangeau! Stuarda has no chance of being pardoned if she slapped Queen Elizabeth I LOL
Why of all productions did this have to be so terrible? Great amazing incomparable voices with nothing but mush for the eyes... =( like a bowl of oatmeal
1972......PERO ES IGUAL EL AÑO......SIEMPRE EN TODOS SUS AÑOS NOS DIO COSAS MUY EXTRAÑAS EN SU VOZ....SIEMPRE ARROLLADORA Y EXULTANTE......PODEROSA...LIBRE.....EMOCIONAL.......LLENA DE GANAS.....GANAS DE DAR LO MEJOR...DE SI MISMA....LO MEJOR DE TODAS LAS CANTANTES...SU EXTREMA CAPACIDAD DE ESTAR EN LA ESCENA.....Y SU ESTREMECEDOR....CONTENIDO ARTISTICO Y HUMANO......UNA FENOMENO......LA MAXIMA DE LOS FENOMENOS
@ezayi The conductor Richard Bonynge (Sutherland's husband) arranged the vocal lines to create a greater contrast between the two queens, making Elisabetta's part lower than written and Maria's higher.
@MadonnaImperia Love Joan but why doing that?... Joan was going to be great anyways. Besides, this mezzo sounds like she wouldn´t be able to do it. Anyway, she did a good job. Thanks! :)
Wow. While I think that Sutherland's range as an actress and interpreter was limited, what she did well she really knocked out of the park. And the voice in the role? Only Caballe compares. Brava!
Man, what an interpretation!! Sutherland is positively overwhelming. I don't agree with her transposing up an octave the "Figlia impura di Bolena", though. If you sing it on the lower octave, as written, the higher notes of that passage will be on "Meretrice indegna e oscena", and that is correct, given that it means "Obsene and unworthy whore". Instead, with the transposition, the whore insult is on lower notes than the previous insults, and that doesn't make very much sense. Picky picky..
beyond amazing, Dramatic singing at its most staggering from Joan and Huguette. Even with lousy quality vision this is a priceless example of what IMHO was Joan's best role.;and i say that despite my belief that her Lucia is the greatest we have ever had.
I had not expected the slap.. I just about choked when I saw it.
Given how well I know Miss Sutherland, this addition would add to the drama in a way she would certainly approve since it hands Elizabeth the final insult with which to behead an anointed Queen.
Miss Tourangeau is definitely a sport about taking what is a ringing slap in the face.
I never thought I'd like someone singing Maria's big moment up the octave, especially when it usually bothers me that Sutherland has no chest voice, but she really pulled it off! Brava!
Love the slap, the singing and everything. Who composed the vocal line in the beginning? It is not the usual part. Is it from an alternate version or did Bonynge rewrote the whole thing to fit her higher-placed voice?
Wow this is amazing!! I love Sutherland! When she sings "vil bastarda!" which leads to her slapping Tourangeau - it's so powerful - especially after she sings the "figlia impura di Bolena" an octave higher. Rock on Sutherland!! Just love it - thank you for posting!
No one I've heard spits out that invective with anything like the power or even emphasis that Sutherland does. That and Sutherland is the only Maria that upstages Elizabetta in this scene.
It's sad about the quality of the video - but hey, a bad copy is better than NO copy!! And the sound is just fine. Love the way Sutherland transposes "filgia impura" up an octave, it sounds like she's really screaming at Elizabeth. Thanks for posting this, it's wonderful to hear.
I was at this performance. Joan not had an incredible High D but an impressive right hook. If it had really connected poor Hugeatwould have fallen like a tree hit by lightning. One of Joan's THIS IS MY ROLE roles. Thank you for another great vid.
Where is this from?I want it even with poor video.Where can I find this?Joan in her absolute, powerful prime in one of her supreme roles!OH...the slap comes right after "Vil bastarda",right before the last section...
This is a wonderful video! Of course, the quality is bad, but it exactly shows how an opera could be truly dramatical and forceable with good singers and good interpretation, not to mention to have someone like Sutherland. Sutherland could truly shows the anger and frustration of Maria through the singing, not just the acting. And her singing was just fabulous. Never dream that there would be a video of Sutherland's Maria Stuarda and she was certainly at her best. Truly La Stupenda!
So totally agree, and I truly doubt Callas could have ever done this role as well.. People who say Joan had no drama didn't see this, Anna Bolena or Lucrezia Borgia.

Thank God other singers have gone beyond this loud belcanto without nuances. Yes we have a confrontation scene, but these are two regal, tormented women. In such a dramatic moment "Bollena" and "basciarda" are not acceptable in my opinion. 3/1
I am glad to hear that, timsuffolk! Even though personally I tend not to call other people's tastes odd if they do not coincide with mine. But enough is as good as a feast, have fun!
Need a hearing aid dearie. I heard Bastarda. Why not say whose nuanced singing you prefer? Might this be just a slap at Sutherland which is okay but who do you prefer?
I am glad you enjoy this sweetheart. I don't see the point of listing my favourite Stuardas under the Sutherland's clip. In a singer I appreciate dinamica sfumata and a correct diction, that's personal taste.
5/5 - i am envious of your collection ColoaturaFan! However, i am greatful you have such a love for the music that you share these rarities with us all. kindest regards,
