You mean they allowed a steam loco to open its regulator more than a 1/4" on hallowed "modern" railways lines, shocking! I thought they were restricted to 25mph.
Great Video! Great Train! and wow when the freight train passed it looks like your train stopped, and i've never seen a freight train move so quick before lol
71000, the clag monster! Is this the answer to Arthur Scargill's prayers? Has the fireman been released from the insane assylum yet? Bloody brilliant!
That is a beasting of Shap!! And you must have pooed yourself when that 66 came past! Great sound from what looked like the 5th carraige, well done, I loved it!
So this is Shap ! Wow being a Southerner I don't offen get the chance to venture up there and now I know what it all looks like....Will have it on my bucket list. Great vid. Best I can do is Tangmere out of Folkstone Harbour last but one trip...wish it had be OC instead
Hi: Shap is a small town on the A6 at the edge of the Lake District. The West Coast main line climbs north to this town from Tebay and the climb is known as Shap. The Long Drag generally describes the southerly climb to Birkett Common on the S&C although some enginemen in the past referred to the whole S&C by this name.
Bless you Robin Riddles, you are redeemed...Is this not a magnificent locomotive? All goes to show what total frigging clowns ran BR in the first ten years or so from 1948...and also, indirectly, goes a long way towards explaining why Richard Beeching inherited such a bloody mess and was (a) virtually forced down the paths he pursued and (b) was scapegoated for everything that followed...
And before anyone leaps, read all of.. (1) the full (blue) part 1 report and (2) the (orange) part 2 report
When British Railways was first formed the engines kept their previous paint jobs but with the words BRITISH RAILWAYS painted on the tender until the first BR crest came along.
So Torndao is painted as it would have been during the first year or two of nationalisation.
I think they should have been exotic and used the BR blue that some steamers had early on in BR with the early crest. Green is nice but a bit typical on steam engines these days :(
That 66, quite simply, NEARLY KILT YOU! But nice video and 5 stars... I wish I lived over there because you lucky guys have big pacifics running on the mainline where they should be, not like over here where they're luck to do 25 pulling open coaches.
That pass by the 66 was a bit close for comfort, almost lost your camera there !! Great Video. Im really after getting some shots of Torrnado now, which is to be pulling the torbay express each Sunday in July and will be coming down as far as Paignton
What a LEGEND ! .. Simple as, What express was she pulling ??
And just to back up DrKincade's Point .. when she hit Scout green and all the cars, Alot do whistle but unfortunatly, the driver or fireman im guessing were busy !? Haha
What an awesome performance by a fantastic loco 5* and into the railways playlist my friend.
This may (or probably is) a stupid question but what record did DoG break on this run, fastest ascent time? fastest average speed? i'm assuming something along those lines
Hi: if I remember correctly 71000 recorded the fastest steam ascent, the fastest summit speed and the heaviest unassisted load. In fact, the power output was calculated to exceed that of a class 47 by some margin! It also (unofficially) recorded the highest average speed for steam in modern times during repositioning between Preston and Crewe. What a tour!!
Steamclips, a class 47 or 57 can only generate slightly less than 2100 drawbar horsepower. The Duke can exceed 2700 drawbar horsepower, which incidently, is more than a Deltic!
Fantastic on train footage of the most powerful Steam locomotive ever built in the Country. 71000 Duke of Gloucester is a truly fantastic machine! Great Job! She smashes the record on Shap!!!!!! *****
I reemember passing this tour on the S&C, with D1015 going the opposite direction. Quite a moment!

What Shap record was broken........for steam traction only? I can't believe it would beat a 390, AC Loco, or 2 x D400

Notice all the cars and the people looking at 0:29 and especially at 1:25-1:35 and there's not one toot of the whistle in either case.
It's as if every PSI of steam in that boiler was precious and not to be wasted on such frivolities.
Fantastic video of a fantastic effort, instantly became one of my favourites.
DrKincade 3 years ago
nice video but i doubt the freight was at 120mph
Forevagrey 3 years ago
Steamclips specifically states a passing (or better closing) speed of 120 mph . Say 55 for DoG and 65 for the freight. More reasonable figures those.
camsprocketpinion 3 years ago
totally agree .. ii really dont think that 66 was doin' 120mph, still bloody impressive tho !
