  • how do you export music as a mp3?

  • @TheAaron404: It's been a while since I last used LMMS, but from what I remember, it probably doesn't. Really there is no need for it to. When doing audio work you like this, you are going to want to export it in a better format then mp3. Something with less quality loss. Then, there are plenty of programs that can take what ever format you export and then compress it to a number of formats such as MP3. FFMPEG, LAME, Mencoder, just to name a few.

  • You clearly explained some essential basics for a beginner,.Thanks Kris. This is an excellent video.

  • Hey I love the videos and they helped a lot! i do have a problem if you could help that would be great. Im using an Akai Mpk Mini (MIDI) keyboard/ drum-pad. I believe that i have it all set up right but in LMMS when i click on an instrement, then click on MIDI, it says i have nothing under the input. im not sure what is wrong? Thanks!

  • @NiponKen: Sorry, I don't have that MIDI device so I couldn't really tell you much. but, I did Google that device and it is compatible with Linux out of the box. Have you tried to use it with any other programs? Are you using JACKD? does it at the very lest show up with lsusb? Best thing to do is ask somebody involved with either LMMS or even better, may be some one involved with that device. Asking me isn't really useful since I don't have one.

  • @metalx1000 Thanks so much, i think LMMS is just not recognising the controller. I looks the same as if i didn't have it plugged in. ill try contacting lmms

  • @ metalx1000 Does LMMS have a virus when you download it from the main site on Windows Vista? I don't wanna get a virus or I;m grounded for the rest of my life

  • @ericfal10: Why would you think it has a virus? It's Open-Source so if it was doing anything malicious you could tell from the code. But, I'm guessing you downloaded the binary package. I would tell you that you should never download Binary executables from a website. But since you are running Windows that is pretty much your only choice. If you are worried about malicious software, I recommend upgrading to Linux and only using software out of the default repose of your distro.

  • Hi, does this software support VST plugins?

  • @captain0muscles: I have not used them myself, but yes. It requires Wine to be installed, which is why I have not used it myself.

  • Thanks for the tutorial, nice vid !

  • holy shit what the hell is your problem the nice thing would be not to reply at all...........being a dick is just mean thanks i was just asking for help never mind... next time if your just gonna be a d bag don't replay at all it prevents people from feeling like shit so thanx again for that ASSHOLE

  • I AM A SINGER SONGWRITER ....I AM TRYING TO RECORD AND MAKE SONGS.... COMPLETE SONG WITH VOCALS......SO THERE IS NO PROGRAM THAT DOES ALL THAT THE THREE DO THAT YOU TOLD ME ABOUT DO ...LIKE PRO TOOLS OR SOMETHING AS YOU CAN SEE I AM NEW TO THIS ALL THE SONG I HAVE RECORDED SO FAR MY FRIEND DID HE IS A SOUND ENGINEER BUT I MOVED AND NOW AM TRYING TO LEARN

  • @Amberlaakso: first off, turn off your "caps lock" There is no need to type every thing in caps. Why you would want just one program is beyond me. I don't seen what it matters if you have 1 program or 3 that work together. If it does what you need it does what you need. If you want to go waste your money on pro tools then go buy pro tools. I can't tell you what to do and what not to do. You asked my advise and I gave it to you.

  • @Amberlaakso: And I understand that you are a "singer songwriter". If you are looking for a Track recorder to record and mix your Vocals I've already told you 3 time that I suggest Ardour. I'm not really sure what you want me to say other then that. Also, IT'S VERY RUDE TO TYPE IN ALL CAPS BY THE WAY!

  • THANKS .....ONE MORE THING SINCE YOU SEEM TO KNOW A LOT ABOUT MANY COMPUTER PROGRAMS.... I WAS WONDERING WHICH MUSIC MAKING SOFTWARE IS THE BEST TO BUY....I PRETTY MUCH NEED A STUDIO IN A BOX :) IF YOU GOT ANY SUGGESTIONS THAX AGAIN

  • @Amberlaakso: If your' buying it, your getting the wrong software. As far as what software you should use, depends on what you are trying to accomplish. If you are working on loops and beats, LMMS is good. If you are working on Drums, you can't go wrong with Hydrogen. Track recording and Mixing, Ardour.

  • @Amberlaakso:

There are a lot of programs out there. Depending on what you are doing and the sound you are going for you will use different programs. Luckily most programs work well together with JACK. Just check out your package manger/software center and see what is there. Since Software is free you can't go wrong. Just play with different programs until you find the tools you that fit you.

  • cool thax and if you ever do get into lmms and find the recording track let me know i will try to figure it out.... also is ardour free

  • @Amberlaakso: Yes it is. I wouldn't recommend it if it wasn't. Should be in your repositories.

  • HOW DO YOU ADD VOCALS

  • @Amberlaakso: Well, LMMS does have a track recording option, and some people have put it to good use.

But I recommend checking out Ardour. It is a GREAT track editor and I tend to clean up and finish most my project in it.

  • Great tutorial!

I will watch your other lmms tutorials too

  • Just downloaded this, but no matter what sound i try to play, its EXTREMELY fuzzy and pretty much just un-distinguishable noise. Please help??

  • @slashlespaul516: I'm going to assume that you are using Windows. If this is true, I can't help you much, but if you read other comments you may find a solution to your problem.

But, My recommendation is you stop using Windows.

If you are already running Linux, let me know and I'll see what I can find out for you, but so far this problem seems to be Windows related.

  • @metalx1000

where how do i use it i am a singer songwriter and like most of us broke.......so i am trying to use and learn to make some songssssssssss thax for the help

  • @Amberlaakso: As I said, I don't really ever use the LMMS audio track. I'm not sure if it records the audio, but you should be able to import it. I really recommend using Ardour.

  • @slashlespaul516 I CAN FIX THAT!!!

    :D

I had that problem as well. Go to "edit", "settings" (or setup) and then click the button that shows a speaker with sound waves. On the first slide menu, choose SDL (simple directmedia layer) and then restart lmms.

Congrats, It should be alllll fixed now!

  • @slashlespaul516 Make sure that when it boots up, you select the right audio outputs. For myself, "Windows DirectSound" for backend and "Primary Sound Driver" for device worked quite well.

  • Hi - I've just uploaded this , and when you click on the my samples e.g. instruments you don't get the proper sound of for example - the piano , just an electronic/ electro noise - any ideas ???

  • @volitionlocked: Are you using Windows?

  • @metalx1000 Yes Window's , It actually turns out LMMS was routing the sound through a secondary audio device , so simply changing the settings has fixed it .

Your video is excellent btw :)

  • @volitionlocked: Good to know. I've heard from a number of people who use Windows were having that issues. I don't use Windows, so I was unable to look into it. Thanks for your post.

  • What "sets" do they have... I know they have keyboard/piano/noises. but do they use drums & other stuff, etc?

  • I use this software, it is pretty great! Check out my first song over on my channel if you would like to see what you can do with LMMS

  • I'm naming my first Lmms album "Fancy Debug Values" and dedicating it to metalx1000

  • @0penpress: Awesome, I'm checking out your channel now.

  • @0penpress: is "UARS UNEDITED ENTRY SURVEILLANCE (ORIGINAL)" done in LMMS? Let me know when you up load more.

  • Does it works with VSTi ?

  • @EmanuilPenev: LMMS is suppose to work with, but you need to have WINE installed to do that. Since I would never install WINE on a machine I have never tried it out.

  • Good Tuto!

  • This is the fourth tutorial lmms i have watched...and its the best one I found. Thanks!

  • Please, can you tell me why, after exporting in wav format as many as 65 projects, now I am having troubles in exporting a song made of only built-in presets and samples, and using default export options -- which always proved working so far. Now I can export any projects except this new one. Please, don't ask me fancy debug values. No offence meant but that would mean you are as clueless as me. My problem must be familiar toall those who made tens of songs, like me.

  • @Deisinoful: well, if it worked 65 times before, and it's not working now, something is different. You've asked me not to ask you for a "fancy debug values". I wouldn't ask you for a 'fancy debug value'. This isn't windows (or are you in windows, you didn't really say). If there is a problem, you should get an error message, telling you what the problem is. you've given me no info.

  • @metalx1000 thanks, I did fix it. It was a VST plugin that left a snippet of code where it didn't belong. TO ALL LMMS USERS: if you get sick of VST sounds at half a project but want to keep the track, create a new track with the new plugin and copy the single segments from the old track to the new one. Then delete the VST track. DON'T drag the new plugin in the VST track or you might be unable both to export to Wav and delete the Vst track. Short, you will lose all of your work

  • @Deisinoful: You haven't told me what OS, Distro, or version of LMMS you are running. You haven't even told me what the problem is. All you've said is "I can export". I would like to help you, but you need to give me some info. If there is some 'fancy debug values' yes give it to me.

  • hi, thanks for your video. I have a problem with lmms (0.4.11). whenever I start it the setup LMMS windows appear. I set the buffer size (in the general settings tab) in order to improve the sound. then, I close that window and then tells me that most changes won't take effect until I restart LMMS. I do so, I restart LMMS. But, whenever I open it the very same window appears again. So, I can't set the buffer size and therefore the sound I get isn't good. I have windows xp. thanks.

  • Hi metalx i have another problem :( i know gow to use it but the sound is coming out like corrupted!! Can u help?

  • @skeleton116: Go to "Edit>Settings" and click on the speaker icon (3rd icon down). You should be looking at your "Audio Settings". What do you have selected as you "Audio Interface"?

  • @nahandyjr: Thank you.

  • I make songs in my head when im high on weed,

  • i downloaded this software and the sound quality sucks it sounds like a ball of static going off in my head set please help me

  • @infamousjewPS3: What distro are you using? Are you using Jack, PulseAudio, Alsa, OSS? You've giving me no info to work with. I have heard real bad sound quality from LMMS, but I believe it was because the person was using OSS. Most modern systems don't use OSS as their main sound system. I suggest Jack, since most Music Applications work well with it and I believe it gives you more control over your sound applications then other sound servers.

  • i need a video:

"LMMS Part #0 - how to get sound out of the damn thing."

I just got a new sound-card with midi-out that I can't even test if it works until I get sound to the old card that worked, then get midi to drive on the old card, then switch to the new card and get them going to an external synth. I'm assuming LMMS does all this.

  • @frankbraker: Hum, sounds like you have issues other then LMMS. If your hardware is setup and configured properly it should just work with LMMS. Have you tried any other program, and do they work?

I've never worked with a sound card that has Midi ports on it. All my Midi stuff is USB (Although they do show up as sound card device).

What distro are you running? What Audio Interface are you using (alsa, jack, pulse)?

  • @metalx1000 Many thanks for all the help. I'm running under Vista and just wanted to verify that the sound-card with MIDI out works and could drive the keyboard.

MIDIOX is a MIDI debugger that helped me at least get that far. So my advice to anyone would be first look for a MIDI debugger. I'm so happy now I'm almost tempted to do a video just about that. Thanks again!!!

  • i need a video:

"LMMS Part #0 - how to get sound out of the damn thing."

  • @frankbraker: Well, if you are using alsa, or jack it should auto detect that. If you are using Pulseaudio it should also auto detect that, but Pulseaudio can cause problems. Either way, you can go to the preference window and manually choose the audio interface there (Should have brought that up the first time you ran LMMS, but you can get to it any time under "Edit > Settings"

  • This is a generous tutorial but I do not know why people feel compelled to bash free software. It is very robust and the nearest competitor is 200 USD.

  • How do you make a lmms file open with windows media player, so i can listen to it as a track?

  • @iiD4G: when you export them, choose WAV format (Which is the default). Then open them like you normally would. there is nothing special about them.

  • @metalx1000 kk, but not too sure how you do it? Lol

could you tell me how ?

  • @iiD4G: "File>Export"

  • @metalx1000 thanks

Here's my beat made with LMMS. Everybody check them out, rate and comment!!

  • Anyone know why low bass would be "buzzing" on lmms? The example song under Myprojects->cool_songs->BlueWolf-Dream Travel has a low bass part named "Matrix" that buzzes real bad when I play it, but when I look up a YouTube video of it the bass does not buzz. Only way I can describe it is like an electrical buzzing noise on top of the bass.

I've tried switching the audio from ALSA to PulseAudio and no change.

  • @LoboLoco8908:Not sure. I just listened to it, and I think I hear what you mean, but I just assumed that was how it was suppose to sound.

  • @metalx1000 Thanks, I just wanted to make sure everything was sorted with my installation. I just installed it on my Ubuntu 10.10 and have had some troubles with random crashing of LMMS.

I also followed up and exported the song to a .wav file and the same buzzing was present. I'm betting that YouTube cut out some of the high frequency content in the song and that eliminated the buzzing. That must be why they tell you to listen to songs in HD.

  • Hi, my screen capture tool does not capture my audio... any help? I am using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid... LMMS works fine in my system, only that I can not capture my audio...

  • @xxxlam: I don't know what you are using to capture Video with, but if you are using GTK-RecordMyDesktop, and you are using JACK, There is a check box to use Jack to record audio. But, Ubuntu is a bit screwy when it comes to Audio. And I believe that the copy of RecordMyDesktop in the repose was not compiled with JACK libs and you'll have to compile it yourself to add that option.

Or, what I do is record all my audio with Ardour and then line it up with the video later.

  • @metalx1000 or just use Camtasia

  • @bitnit454: aaaa, or not :) haha. That was a joke right?

  • @metalx1000 its way more better than what you use

  • @bitnit454: You must be joking, haha...It's hard to tell when people are typing. But, if you are talking about the Camtasia I think you are, it won't work at all. Plus it's Proprietary software. I only use Good Software, sorry.

  • @metalx1000 Im talking about the screen recoder

  • @bitnit454: Yup, like I said,

    1) Wont even work (And I just double checked at their to be sure).

    2) It Proprietary software (Wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole even if it would work)

    3) FFMPEG works great for me, why would I pay money for Camtasia which doesn't have all the features?

  • can you insert lyrics from another song, so you can add your own beat to that song?

  • thanks for the tutorial!!

  • @franerg: No problem

  • @metalx1000 Im importing .ogg files, LMMS 0.4.8,

and i do get sound, just the samples i try to import don't get any sound.

  • @zcmr123: Do you get any errors? What does the terminal output say? Are you using JACK or ALSA? Which Distro are you running?

  • @metalx1000 How come when i try to import samples, it says it cannot find a filter, and the files make no sound?

  • @zcmr123: I need more info. What type of files are you trying to import? Which distro are you using? What version of LMMS are you using? Do you get sound out of any thing in LMMS (preset samples or synths)?

  • Been using this for a while, works extremely well on windows 7 64 bit so far.

  • @JERB69s same here

  • thank god for these videos, ive been messing around with linux not knowing half the features until i found these tutorials.

  • If anyone can help, please do so.

When i try to export a song that i created with Lmms 0.4.8. (.wav or .ogg) i get nothing. The file that is created has 0 bytes volume and the icon just next to the file is like a white paper - there is nothing that indicates the file form. Do i need to download anything more? Does anyone else have this problem? Please help. Thank you very much.

  • @biotasss: Sorry, I have not heard of this problem from anyone. If I find something or think of something I'll let you know. Nothing special needs to be installed.

Which Distro are you using? Did you install it from the repositories?

  • @metalx1000 I downloaded it from the official site of sourceforge, directly to the hard disk of my PC (windows vista).

It's something that i cannot explain. I have tried a lot of things in the settings folder trying to find a solution but nothing. Maybe i need to delete Lmms and re-install it.

  • @biotasss: Sorry, I don't really do the Windows thing. When you are ready to upgrade to Linux let me know and I'll be glad to help.

  • @metalx1000 how do i get to it after the download?

  • @DTlucky13: Do you mean LMMS? Should be in your Application menu under "Audio"

  • ima noob any advice for every thing lol i have been watching videos on youtube but im just not getting it

  • @pageu304: Noob to Linux or LMMS?

  • @metalx1000 im a noob at every thing lol i get confused to ez ive been trying for months and im no farther than the first day

  • @pageu304: Well, what would you like advice on? I'll be glade to try and help.

  • @pageu304 metoo

  • PLEASE HELP !!! I DONT KNOW HOW TO SAVE IN MP3 FORM SO I CANT UPLOAD MY TRACKS ! thank you

  • @itinho247: I think LMMS can only save to WAV or OGG formats.

Export it as a WAV and use Audacity to convert it or you can use ffmpeg like this:

    ffmpeg -i input.wav output.mp3

  • U think you can help me install it... it tellss me i have to build it .. and i dunno how?

  • @whadupbum: What distro are you running? Should be in the repose for most distros. Unless you really wanted to compile it your self.

  • @whadupbum Distro would that be windows? i would download it and unzip then it tells me to do something it git, cmake and command promp... and all this baloney

  • does anyone know how to get the completed track i made onto my ipod?i want to know.thanks

  • @dirtbiker95: What distro are you using? I believe LMMS exports files to WAV. you can convert it to MP3 using a GUI program like Audacity or at the command line like so:

    ffmpeg -i infile.wav outfile.mp3

If you are using a current version of Ubuntu or Linux Mint the iPhone is now supported and you should be able to copy the music to is with RhythmBox or a few other music players.

  • @metalx1000 thanks. i have audacity. how would i import my tracks from LMMS into audactity?and once it is in there, how would i convert it

  • @dirtbiker95: once in Audacity go to File->Import then once the file has Loaded go to File->Export and choose mp3. You need LAME installed, Depending on your Distro LAME may or may not be installed by default.

  • How would you go about recording from a USB microphone into LMMS?

  • @TheSWEETZENITH: I could be wrong, but I don't know if LMMS has a record feature. I could be wrong though. Ardour is a track recorder and more of a program for that.

But, I'll look into if LMMS has a record feature.

  • Good job man. when I tried this program, I thought it derived from a FL engine. Does this program let u put in outside vsts?

  • I'm pretty sure it does. It's basically at what FL Studio was at about 4 years ago, so take that as a reference.

  • Not really, to this day i still use FL5, and i do think its better organized on some parts.

But hey Lmms is still at 0.4

  • newest version is 0.4.5 :D:D

  • Yeah, Repositories are not always the newest. But, I just moved from version 0.3.5 or something like that. So, even this was a jump for me and I 'l the direction LMMS ls heading. I'll check out 0.4.5 soon.
