if you were smart and not assuming it wasn't to power the suit, then why was the right gauntlet connected to it when potts went down to get him when the dude was visiting and he said it's a fight stabilizer, no way before all this was mentioned in the movie, you should of known from the scene in the cave when the professor said it could power the planet for however long, then tony starks responds "or something big for 15 minutes, (hence the 1st = replaced/upgraded when he goes back home.)

slight correction, its a renewable energy supply that powers the electromagnet near his heart to stop the shrapnel entering his heart.
in turn, its powerful enough to power the suit.
