The 757's and 767's that the TERRORISTS used were much larger, with much bigger fuel tanks and could, and did, travel much faster. Actually, the number killed in Afghanistan just hit the 80 mark, sadly. The people no longer want intervention there so we should leave their country to them. Our role was strictly humanitarian, but to be involved in a full out war. Our troops are not equipped for such a scenario.
