I wonder if any manufacturers make the 'stream' type rather than the 'fog type' seen her. I've seen the stream type used by police as its made to go directly into the eyes of a resisting suspect and not fog all the policemen trying to subdue the suspect. Stream types have a much longer range but demand accuracy on part of the user.
Just FYI I had a can of Frontiersman Bear Mace that had expired in Feb, 2009. I just shot it off like you did today (See video) and didn't get any on me at all and was upwind, I walked back about 25 feet to my camera & started coughing! It hadn't lost any of it's potency at all. You may not need to shoot them off when they expire.
whenever I buy anti-personnel pepper spray I do the same thing. I buy an extra canister and fire it off, just so I know what the stream looks like, the range, and how long the burst will last in an emergency. think of it like any other weapon, you want to be familiar with it's capabilities and limits.

If you had read the label instructions, you would have seen that you are NOT supposed to use the product in foilage where bears live or might be present.
To do that allows bears to grow accustomed to the smell and taste as they move about the test area. Once the bears get used to the product, its protective value is far less for humans.
Next time, do it in your back yard so the rest of us can use bear spray and know it will work.
It's deterrent, and one of the best brands is UDAP. I don't know for sure it's effectiveness with a griz on the fight, but it will deter a human attacker instantly. I carry a 9.2 ounce can in my ruck and discharged a short blast (recommended for a new bottle) as the wind changed and carried a dose my way. Directly struggling for air and a burning sensation like a cloud of stinging nettles, pretty much hatin life for about 20 minutes until i could get to a creek. Don't rub your eyes, ever! ~Dave

If a bear has an aggressive enough attitude it doesn't matter if the bear gets an irritant in its nose, its not stopping once it decides to run you over. Bears charging at 35mph are NOTHING like a bear you are hunting. The bottle is spraying a large quantity of liquids at a rapid rate and a long distance. The company in kalispell also makes a cheaper one exactly like it with inert chemicals so you can practice with it.
