  • the song 'steal way' is a very old song, from the days of great oppression in america. long before the civil war. Black People would slip away from their huts, go out into nature & dig holes into the ground. they would climb into the holes so that only their heads were above ground. there they would pray to God for deliverance from oppression of slavery, without being detected. the punishment for being caught was very bad, (whipped to death ect.) does oppression still exist today in america? Y

  • @jagib2 it still exist (my opinion) for those of us who's caught up about it... WE ARE STILL HERE

  • In reference to the posted statement, that's why i'm So Proud to be BLACK and have no reservations in saying it....Our artists were severely exploited and were undermined during the civil rights years but God,despite the fact, still exalted them with SUPERNATURAL voices that were and are still UNMATCHED by any of their oppressors..

  • Nothing as powerful and as haunting as this will ever be created again

  • To the comments below the only Good Master is Jehovah.

  • My all-time favorite singer, gospel or otherwise.

  • @squirell1952 In every race there are bad people and good people. I'm not saying that slavery was good, but I bet that there were good masters and bad masters.. Not every master was brutal as not every german was nazi.

  • @Poprostujaola And again, I'm not saying that slavery was proper. I just want to say that that who you are doesn't depend on a race.

  • @Poprostujaola oh... That's true,

  • @Poprostujaola The sucky truth for you to deal with, is every slave owner and every nazi contributed to the societies of which they lived.

  • @Jazreldedondru ...good masters... hahahahahahaha!!!!!!

  • @Jazreldedondru True. And the societies at that time thought it was ...' socially acceptable'.

  • @Poprostujaola: I'm sorry--but there is NO such thing as a "good master." Holding someone captive is BAD, regardless of the "disposition" of the captor.

  • @Poprostujaola no such thing as a good slave

  • @mizzyiesz You sound like you are full of hate. Maybe you need a hug. Here it's free. (hug)

  • @Poprostujaola you're an idiot.

  • After listening to this song I am convinced there is something other than man that is greater than us human race mann

  • Lord have mercy her voice is so strong and powerful!

  • Someday in Heaven home sweet home we will see and hear them sing together again. Thank you Jesus...

  • This is just magnificent - can't watch it without getting misty-eyed!

  • This came from the heart!! Amazing!!!

  • Beautiful! :)

  • Amazing!

  • Beautiful!!

  • thank you for Mahalia Jackson she really took me back to the early years of my life, thank you.

  • this is so moving - thanks for posting

  • love this video of thes to sing togeter. pretty song

  • kiedy przy przepięknych wykonaniach przy klasycznych wykonaniach znajdę jakiś polski komentarz.Czyżby młodzi nie wiedzieli gdzie i jak sięgnąć po doznania tak wspaniałe??

  • Jesus has no color or race

  • The queen of gospel... awesome !

  • Information for all racist (part 3):

Consequence: white people are inferior to albino people and the most superior are spiders!!!!! So I advise to all racist to go and find the nearest spider , submit to him/her and to serve him/her the best way that the this racist guy is able. Good luck.

  • Information for all racist (part 2):

express the melanin-producing genes, thereby conferring a greater or lesser concentration of skin melanin. Some individual animals and humans have very little or no melanin in their bodies, a condition known as albinism.

  • Information for all racist (part 1):

Melanin is a pigment that is to find everywhere in nature, being found in most organisms (spiders are one of the few groups in which it has not been detected). In humans, melanin is the primary determinant of skin color. It is also found in hair, eyes and inner ear. Although, in general, human beings possess a similar concentration of melanocytes in their skin, the melanocytes in some individuals and ethnic groups more frequently or less frequentlly

  • IM no racist, but no white people can ever sing like this, and its breaks my heart 2 hear Nat King cole was asked 2 hide black musicians behind a screen. Racism has no place in art at all

  • @whisthaj

I totally agree with you,no white person can sing like this, white people are unable to produce voice so deeply resonant, so smooth like a velvet, the "color of black voices" is unique. God blessed black people with this gift and I admire them.

Yes racism has no place in art, but!II It has no place anyvhere. Nor in public life, nor in hearts and minds of people. People are unequal only according their deeds (bad/good action) and not according to amount of melanin in their bodies.

  • 1957-

    Wow...Thanks for posting this

  • she is God.

  • she sings like a bird.R.I.P.

  • She was a great gift from God for us.

  • Amen!!! A trumpet did indeed sound within my soul!

  • @jeffbazell1 WHAT A BLESSED EXPERIENCE......!!!!!

  • Beautiful. Nat King Cole's show lasted only a couple of years. He pulled the plug when the network ordered him to hide his black musicians behind a screen.

  • @wwleslie Got goosebumps reading your comment, especially the last part.

Ordered huh? Glad he pulled the plug. I wondered how the network asked him. 'Mr. Cole, we the network, were wondering if you could hide your coloured musicians behind a white screen?' Maybe Nat King Cole thought 'That's it.' And said no.

Find it hard to picture him telling his musicians 'Guys, you play wonderfully but I have to hide you behind a screen?'

  • @wwleslie I had no idea that was the problem. Is that the same as saying 'he was ahead of his time?'

  • i have to sing this for varsity choir. it is very sad but also a good song.

  • They are two cute!!! I love them both!!

  • I have this with Nat King Cole on a Old Cassette tape recorded in 1987 from WHAT radio..

  • Mother Mahalia is awesome, the way that she sings, and the songs she sung is when gospel music was real gospel music. The Lord anoited mother, I can STILL (54 yrs. after they sang this song) feel the anoiting in late 2011. Love the gospel (singers) musuc of today, but none can match mother Mahalia Jackson.

    How great is our God.

    AMAZING!!!!!!

  • @mrhankcollins honestly, i must say, i felt same way...anytime i listened her great voice singing...i first heard my early age in 1965 and i was deeply touched and i am still...

  • Thanks alot so much for uploading, i am pleased and thankful to listen this wonderful piece of art and music, a great singer and wonderful Lady that walked among on earth for praise the Lord in such and peaceful pleasent way...Im sure, she is welcome in the Lord´s home and sings on ...

  • THERE WILL NEVER BE TALENTS LIKE THESE TWO AGAIN!!! INCOMPARABLE!

    Rest Peacefully

    MAHALIA JACKSON {1911~1972}

    NAT KING COLE {1919~1965}

  • @PigfootAbernathy Could'nt agree more! SMH

  • Really? I'm jealous!!!!!!!!!

  • besser gehts nicht

  • I just had a moment. I'm so glad I got to see this clip :)

  • her voice always sends chills down my spine , just imagine someone from New Orleans not doing jazz

  • Mother Jackson will always be one of my favorite singer . Now this is sacred and gospel music.. Sung from the heart. Nat King Cole and Mother Jackson together as a duet: who would have ever thought! Splendid rendition!!!

  • Geez! I had forgotten how GREAT her voice was. GREAT! I also had forgotten why I can't listen to her. She makes me want to be religious. I was raised on Mahailia.

  • What a voice and reverence in her singing.Sung with her Soul !

  • @jeffbazell1 I can only imagine! I first heard of her when I was 6, I remember my dad playing her records every friday night. Im 23 and I still listen to her to this day. "Train up a child....Proverbs 22:6"

  • this is so beautiful

  • Een pareltje.

  • Yeah... Unashamed of the Name..!

  • Been listening to her since I was a child, her singing is so great and she feels the Lord as she sings. There will never be another one like her, never. Thank you for being here during my life time.

  • So moving, i'm trying to write through tears. This is heartfelt and sincere- . thank you

  • Im from Chicago and I can tell you there wasnt a Sunday when Mahalia wasnt playing!!!

  • LOVES THIS DUET!!!!!

  • We sang this song in a mens community choir show put on by the local high school, called "For Men Only". We sang this. It was amazing. Of all the songs we sang that night, this was the best.

  • That is one beautiful song.

  • Now, I am sure, God IS black... smile... I feel like a poor white child sneaking into the back of His church, to feel His presence through these two incredible singers' voices. Amazing! and totally graceful.

  • @signlaw God's colour depends on who invented him.... It's just a song...beautifully sung by two of my favourite artists whose colour I never knew as a kid....... and nelson Riddle in charge of the orchestra? Brilliant!

  • Istenáldotta tehetség volt.

  • Yes Lawd!

  • I am now just able to appreciate these songs.

  • am crying right now r.i.p.mahalia

  • Just got to perform an arrangement of this song at my school, but we barely made a scratch compared to that beautiful, and empathetic voice of Ms. Jackson. This was so healing to listen to...

  • this song is so touching!

  • so sweet

  • oh yes...i love everything the woman sings

  • Beautiful!

  • TWO OF THE GREATEST VOICES AND TALENTS OF ALL TIME!

    Rest Peacefully

    Mahalia Jackson (1911-1972)

    Nat King Cole (1919-1965)

  • Some things are just about beyond description!

  • They don't make em like Nat & Mahalia no more!

  • It is so nice to see such classy black folk on the screen like that (yes I am black thank you) and the black people today I see on the screens are so offensive, ignorant, and inappropriate for youth.

  • @ytdsgdjgfueyxn537 You don't know what happens next, anymore than anyone else; a threat is generally motivated by anger or ill- will.

  • she is one of the greatest singers ever. true woman of God who was faithful, obedient to her pastor and audience. we need more fine, classy, and genuine gospel singers /women like mahalia .

  • @Professional bass player 310 lbs: Your size has nothing to do with it, you are a person who has a love for music, right, and a heart. That is who you are truth.

  • Moments like these are common in the lives of many of us, as these folks were our families, touch by certain lives in this Country, and the many hurts, harms, and daily livings have hewed in us the songs, the spirits, the trials of life, which many of you know as Jazz, Gospel and Blues. Amen.

  • GLORY!

  • 17 people don't know what real music is or can't sing real gospel music

  • Now this is singing from the soul! Mahalia Jackson is one of my favorite Gospel singers. To pair Nat King Cole with Mahalia Jackson is genius! Thank the Good Lord for them.

  • Awesome! Words cannot adequately express my appreciation for this clip, and the demonstration of a rare gift we are all privileged to listen to.

  • she is singing in heaven, she mooved me to tears

  • Take note people, THIS is how you do Gospel.

  • That was beautiful. Even though Nat King Cole sang secular music such as Jazz, his roots was gospel music, because his father was a minister. So I'm sure he felt right at home singing with Mahalia. She was so deep rooted in the Lord and it radiated when she sang. She refused to sing secular music when she was offered money to do so, and she even divorced her husband because he wanted her to sing secular music. Mahalia was a deeply religious woman who was totally committed to serving the Lord.

  • i couldnt agree more. i mean im glad its there , just not for me.

  • She sings that with so much passion ....as if god speaks with us through her voice

  • I am a profeesional country bass player I love all music.....Im also 6'4 310 pounds.........And I jsut cryed liek a baby....Im am now and forever a fan of mahalia jackson

  • @mrhankcollins

Oh how wonderful! Mahalia's singing moved me very much when I first heard her sing when I was a child and I have been a fan ever since. Thanks for watching and leaving your comments. God bless.

  • @Emeless

  • @mrhankcollins Yes, she'll make you cry. I've never known a gospel voice like hers. Always have to have a box of tissues when I hear her -- even when I was a kid I used to cry. It may be "old school" gospel but she sings the REAL gospel music that deeply touches the soul. Conte, porary gospel lacks the depth of old school gospel and I'm not a fan of it.

  • @kariebeez

yes she iwas 1 of the best ever and I can't wait to hear her sing in heaven

  • @hannahr77 I found this lady on youtube who sounds almost like her. type in Marie Guillian Steal away by Mahalia Jackson

  • @mrhankcollins funny,,,you made my day

  • @mrhankcollins this is what i raised on...love mahalia jackson...always have & always will....people always say that she sang funeral songs, but i don't care. I love her voice. makes you have goosebumps....

  • @mrhankcollins I love your comment. Mahalia has a way of reducing the biggest of men to tears. I often wonder how a woman with such a powerful voice and presence can be so graceful. I am so grateful that we have outlets that will allow us to continue enjoying timeless classics.

  • @mrhankcollins Type in Marie Guillian Steal Away by Mahalia Jackson Be blessed when you hear how much they sound somewhat alike.

  • @mrhankcollins My mom use to talk about her when I was little, years later I bought a Christmas cassette of hers after listening to her I WAS HOOKED love her voice, love her voice. So I know what you say.

  • @mrhankcollins You are not alone. I cried when I heard her sing 'In The Garden'. Her physical body is long since dead, but her legacy lives in on. From the grave, she still inspires and brings awe before the presence of the living God.

  • VERY BEAUTIFUL

  • There is nothing better than this. There are different things that are just as good, maybe, but good golly this are none better.

  • I love this!

  • Awesome performance by Mahalia Jackson and Nat King Cole.

  • Respectfully, priceless. RIP.

  • Nat King Cole: Jazz Giant, velvet voiced maestro - but look at the deference he shows to Miss Jackson.

    Awesome!

Long live Nat, long live Mahalia - both have stolen away to Jesus. Rest in His arms.

  • @weedunn they are asleep, waiting for resurection...when jesus comes to take his own and condemn the world...as the bible says luke 20:35-38

  • @weedunn How is she a jazz singer did she sing it when she was younger?? So far I've only heard her sing bluesy-type of gospel music and that developed into jazz. She sings gospel though not jazz.

  • you can see it in her eyes she was ment to sing for the lord

  • @binstence Thank you for your comment. My mother was in tears when she read your messeage. We are living in a time where songs like Trouble of this World and Amazing Grace and Precious Lord helps us through. We are so glad that your birthday ended up well. If you know of someone who can help my mother with her music just text on her page. May God bless u and your family.
