Now I have reviewed this play as if I under the hood. I would have ruled the player down at the half yd line. At 0:08 the player's body was down and still had possession of the ball. As for the fumble, if the officials stated that he was not yet down by contact then according to the NCAA rulebook once the ball has broken the plain of the goal it will be ruled a touchdown. Now refer to 0:08 again. ball is clearly accrossed the plain

Not only was he down by every possible measure of a player being down (his knee, then hip, then body, then shoulder/elbow), but the ball clearly crossed the plane while in his possession after he was down. Either he was obviously down, or it was a touchdown, there is no in-between. The mistake was compounded by the review booth not buzzing the field.
This is why I do not trust Pac10 officials in Oregon State games.
Officials held off on the whistle as a question about whether a fumble occurred before or after the player was down. If they blew it too soon, the situation couldn't be corrected (dead ball). If they blew it late, the situation could be corrected, time put back on the clock, etc. (live ball). Here, they played it safe, but (1) OSU couldn't call for a replay, because they had no TOs left, and (2) there was a problem with communication between the replay booth and the officials on the field.
The call was so clearly blown that it should never have made it that far. Again, even if he wasn't down, the ball clearly, CLEARLY, was not fumbled until it had broken the plane.
"Officials held off" on the whistle because they are blind, incompetent, or biased. That play was not close enough for a "let the review booth decide" call. The officials in question should have been suspended for the year for that mistake, if not out-right fired on the spot. Yes, it was THAT bad.

EVERY other conference in the NCAA uses refs from their own conference AND refs from their opponent's conference. The PAC-10 is the only conference that uses only their own officials, and they have the most biased refs in the country.

I'm the Umpire in my Officiating Crew and I did NOT see the knee, or any other body part hit the ground before the ball was became loose. I've been a High School Foot Ball Official for 2 yrs. Yeah the Pac-10 officials were terrible in the UGA v Arizona State game. At a crucial point in the game (3rd and goal for Georgia at the ASU goal-line with UGA leading 24-10), ASU had 12 men on the field. And it wasn't a "he-was-running-off-right-before-the-whistle" either. ASU had 12 guys in the formation and there was no call as they stopped UGA on 3rd down. Fortunately it didn't turn the game, but it was still absurd.
i am not associated with either school in any way and i don't even follow pac 10 football that closely, but this video makes me so angry and bitter. it's good that the beavers won, but their entire season could have been affected by that call. in college football every game means way too much for them to be lost on a blown call. i understand the human element of officiating and think it's great, but this was bad. it was clear that the ground caused the fumble and the ball passed the goal line.

I'm standing 4 yds away from the play, but I can't see knee, then entire side of body make contact with the turf before the ball comes loose, which by the way, if you aren't going to call him down, how can you call a fumble after the ball crosses the plain and then comes loose?

impossible camera angle to judge by the video- but if his hand was down at the 1 yd ln the shadow o the ball did not meet the plane of the goal line and was dead just shy. should have been next down at the 1. In Canada, the ground cannot cause a fumble!

Because this was one of Lyle's early games and he had been forced to call them earlier in the half because he couldn't get the offense in line and such. But regardless, teh refs shouldn' thave needed teh extra few minutes to review it

The ground can't cause a fumble anyways. When the ball hits the ground, the play is over, even if it causes him to lose control of the ball, and if his knee is down or not doesn't matter. There is no way you can think that this was a fumble. I don't even have a clue why they didn't review this.

I've gotta believe that JMO SABRES is just trolling for flames. There are 3 reasons this isn't a fumble. 1) His knee, hip, side, and elbow are down before the ball comes out. 2) The ground can't cause a fumble 3) the ball is across the goal line when it comes out of his hand. JMO, the PAC10 suspended this entire crew after reviewing the video. They didn't just reprimand one ref. The entire crew was suspended. It was that bad.

Dude JMOSABRES you totally ignored the part about how the ball isn't coming out at all until it hits the ground, how do you explain that even though the ground caused the fumble it is UWs ball? By rule if a player is being tackled, The ground can't cause a fumble. As is shown UW player is pulling him down by his legs Bernard is going down with control of the ball when he stretches it out the ball hits the ground and comes out therefore ground causing the fumble.

Yeah, dude? I've looked at this play quite a few times now AND also showed your video to 2 other guys on my crew.. WE ALL CAME UP WITH THE SAME CONCLUSION!! His knee did not hit the ground prior to hitting the ground!!!! Let me Re-iterate again !!! WASHINGTON'S BALL!!! I suggest you look at other angles of this play posted on here and you'll be in agreement. If I encountered this dilemma in a H.S. game that I was officating; i would, and in very similar plays, have made the same call !!

But just for a second lets say you ARE correct, even if that is the case it was his hand with the ball hitting the ground that caused the fumble, by rule the ground cannot cause the fumble, still OSU ball.

well... lol you're entitled to your opinion.. My league and crew feel Im a very good and FAIR official in my position as a Referee (Umpire). As officials, we all make bad calls on occasion,and some players/fans/coaches would probably agree I've made some pretty controversial calls, as have others on my Crew. But we're NOT PERFECT.. You see something totally different in that play than I. i agree fully with the Umpire's decision !! No LEG TOUCHED THE GROUND PRIOR TO THE LOOSE BALL !!

Sorry,,, As a High School Football Official.. The officials were CORRECT in allowing the play to continue and awarding the ball to Washington. I'm the Umpire in my Officiating Crew and I did NOT see the knee, or any other body part hit the ground before the ball was became loose. I've been a High School Foot Ball Official for 2 yrs. THE OFFICIALS WERE CORRECT IN THE CALL.. NO REVIEW WAS NEEDED

I'm a High School Foot ball Official (Umpire) but after looking at the play... the officials made the right call.. It was Washington's Ball. OSU lost control of the ball and the player was not in the End Zone .

Even if he wasn't down (which isn't really theoretically possible) the ground caused the fumble, and by rule the ground can't cause fumbles. How the referee blew the call standing 2 yards from the play is beyond me.

Right before half time we left where we were sitting so we could do the half time show, and OSU students started throwing stuff at us, garbage, cups of pop, stuff like that. Then Locker going out, that game was pretty crazy. At least none of the OSU fans started doing what Oregon regularly does...

He was down, but even if the ref didn't see that, the ground is what knocked the ball out, and he had full possession when the ball hit. There's no way that was a fumble.

Yeah the Pac-10 officials were terrible in the UGA v Arizona State game. At a crucial point in the game (3rd and goal for Georgia at the ASU goal-line with UGA leading 24-10), ASU had 12 men on the field. And it wasn't a "he-was-running-off-right-before-the-whistle" either. ASU had 12 guys in the formation and there was no call as they stopped UGA on 3rd down. Fortunately it didn't turn the game, but it was still absurd.

i am not associated with either school in any way and i don't even follow pac 10 football that closely, but this video makes me so angry and bitter. it's good that the beavers won, but their entire season could have been affected by that call. in college football every game means way too much for them to be lost on a blown call. i understand the human element of officiating and think it's great, but this was bad. it was clear that the ground caused the fumble and the ball passed the goal line.

I bet these are the same group of officials who totally screwed Oklahoma against Oregon. There was more than just this play but the onside kick where oregon touched it within ten yards and oklahoma still recovered but they gave oregon the ball with no penalty is just outragious.
