@ghoulliver257 Purists really want to believe that. Actually, the American version is a bit better in the exposition and character development part. The original one had something to do with a "virus" and "dual-genders" and it's very esoteric. Quite a few plot holes. The American version is better because it's more a of a good old fashioned ghost story, so to speak. It doesn't require you to wrap your head around very nonsensica paranormal explanations for what's going on in the film.

@sharpielicker well it isnt exactly my place to say, since i havent seen neither the japanese nor the us version (so i dont really know/care :P) but for a thriller, especially this kind of thriller, plot holes arent that big a deal. not understanding whats going on might actually make it more scary. in any case, it depends on the tastes of each person, but most people that have seen both versions told me they prefered the japanese one, which makes sense since the original is usually better
