@buster447 John trashed almost every Beatles song in his later years. I think that he really tried to seperate himself from the band, as much as possible. Had he lived, I would love to have read an honest interview from him. John loved the Beatles more than he let on, afterall, it was his band. His & Paul's ego were in conflict after the break-up, and Paul was garnering most of the attention at this point. It's hard to tell how John really felt about his Beatles songs, up to his murder.
@troikagirl you two are talking about two separate issues. James is talking about the harmony of the vocals, and you are talking about the guitar effects George Harrison uses. There is no argument.
I've always loved this song, too. Interesting to note that in at least one interview John said he disliked this song most of all, that it was an embarrassment. He wrote it just because they needed a song in a hurry. Sorry, I can't recall which interview...
The use of dissonance on the chords and vocals is what makes this tune. Google it. Leave it to The Beatles and George Martin to come up with this very complex structure that really makes this song so great. Have always loved this tune!
@jamesskb..James. They are not playing dissonant chords, George creates the unusual sound by picking a guitar string and at the same time turning the guitar volume down with a smooth progression, which makes it a strange (but nice) violin type of sound. My brother recreated this sound when he was in a Beatles tribute band.
@troikagirl As a musician for many years, here is the real scoop. George is using a volume pedal to create the as you put it a "violin" sound and the vocals are dissonant three part harmony. You and/or your brother need to do some research! Have a link where song is totally explained. Would be glad to provide to proof my statement.
@jamesskb As a musician for the better part of my 16 years, here the the real scoop. The Beatles freaking rock no matter what it is. Its not about how "musically correct" it is. ITS THE FREAKING BEATLES!!!!!
@Domenaterguitar Sure they rock. Nobody has or ever will rock harder than The Fab Four, but there are reasons why they are the best. It's not about being "musically correct"; it's about the their use of "musical and recording techniques" that was so revolutionary and extraordinary back then. Read Geoff Emerick's book if you really want the inside skinny on how these 4 geniuses, along with the help of Sir George Martin and others, created the greatest rock n roll band ever.
Always been a favourite of mine that's grown on me. The harmonies are brilliant, the song is so melancholy and sad and John proved what a great singer he was with the ascending middle-eighth melody. Doesn't even matter if it's a bit out of tune. That just adds to the charm.
One of the great joys in my life is that my 15 year old daughter loves the Beatles. I am 55 and have been a huge devote to The Beatles since my older brother brought 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' home in 1964. Now she and I sing their songs together
John wrote this song, and in retrospect he said he hated it and put it on his short list of least favorite Beatles songs. That said, it's one of the most stunning examples of dissonant 3-part harmony you'll ever hear on a rock record, or any other music genre. To think this was only good enough to be a B-side of a 45 just shows how many light years ahead of anyone else in the music biz the Beatles were by 1965.
This is my favorite song ever, by any artist. It's possible that the only time the Beatles ever played this song was the night they recorded it. It does not appear on any set lists and I don't think they ever played it again.
One of many examples of the beautiful ballads the Beatles could turn out due to their musicality and ingenuity. The so-called "heavy metal" and "hair" bands of the 80's tried to do the obligatory ballad and those horrible songs showed how limited those groups were (Kiss's "Beth" comes to mind). The Beatles surpassed those bands in pure energy power rock&roll as well as ballads with ease. Beatles were in a class of their own. Few others (mostly from the late 60's) came close.
Ah, the girl I remember wore a purple dress, was 15, sweeter than key lime and had braces on a double date, named Cheryl, and broke my heart...but red goes better than purple in any song...
I love this song too,,,,but I'm not sure why? I know it so well from the Beatles first album, but I never really thought of it as a fav until recently. What almost 50 years later???
According to a wikipedia entry about this song, "In his 1980 interview with Playboy, John Lennon described it as an attempt to rewrite "This Boy" (the style of the song) that "didn't work".[1] Paul McCartney on the other hand described it as "a very fine song of John's", and said he was present when Lennon wrote it.[2]"
I have been a Beatles fan for close to 50 years. This is my second favorite song and it's Lennon all the way. Such a strange and unique pop song for the times but it hooked me the first time I heard it. My favorite is "In My Life" which was playing on my car radio when I realized the girl net to me was going to be my wife. She knew it too and we have been married 43 years now. God bless you all in your fortune and fate. Who knew I would out live John and George when I went to Vietnam?
I heard this song is for John's mother, Julia, that died in a car accident and that day she wore red. I'm not sure that I am correct, but I heard people talking about it.
@liveontheclassics Unless I get the straight cold undeniable facts, I just can't believe it's about Lennon's mother, I mean, what son calls her mother 'baby'?!? What?
I heard that John was trying to write another song like 'If I Fell' when he came up with this. Same theme -- 'don't hurt my price like her' vs. 'but it's my pride, yes it is....'
Esta es una de las canciones mas preciadas de The Beatles para mí. Tal vez porque coincidía con mi adolescencia llena de tantas emociones, tantos deseos por las chicas y tanta timidez en mi persona
I remember I got the LP Beatles VI in 1965...Mom & Dad brought it back from the new car showing in Omaha.
It was the first time my Mom would request one of MY songs...she loved this song and would say, "Kevin, put on that song...If you wear red tonight." Here it is Mom...Happy Mother's Day!
Every time I visit this video I am so struck by the innocence captured in these photographs. We were all so innocent and hopeful, so brushed with light. Where have we all gone?
i loooove this song. i wish some group 4 will serenade this to me. dont worry i dont have dogs. around 1:20 John looks like hes the only one happy in that pic.
Magical Beatle harmony. And John takes me right with him into that blissful ecstasy bordering on pain in that middle chorus. Sweet Jesus. Makes me swoon every time.
John didn't like his voice for the same reason many people don't like the way their voice sounds when they hear it when they're watching their home movies (in your head it sounds better), but he obviously understood that other people dug his voice, otherwise he would have let Paul do the singing rather than taking the lead in most of their early songs. I believe he had the best voice in rock history. So vulnerable yet so powerful.
you could take any song from any of there LPs,and it would have been a smash hit,not like most of the groups today, thank you beatles for the music,RIP john and george,we miss you
I just had to add after reading some comments.. I've read numerous times (and even in a teen magazine) them refer to The Beatles' early work as "bubblegum". I never understood that & it hurts when people discount their earlier contributions. "Yes It Is" may not have the lyrical depth of some of their later work, but it is no less beautiful & inspiring. Great harmonies, exceptional singing by John (as always) & a beautiful, heartfelt melody & lyric. "Bubblegum"?? I think NOT.
@Cozycriter I could not agree with you more. Much of their early music has very sophisticated aspects. Songs like "All I've Got To Do", "Ask Me Why", "Not A Second Time" and many on the album "A Hard Day's Night" are extremely well written and produced with great attention to detail. The song "I'll Be Back" which closes the Hard Day's Night album is a pure delight and you can see the evolution beginning towards the next level of songwriting. Many critics at the time even gave them high marks.
@1966425 THANK YOU SO MUCH!!..because it really bothers me when people say that their earlier songs are trivial or meaningless.. You obviously know & understand good music when you hear it. As for "I'll Be Back"..I absolutely LOVE that song. I love the melancholy feel & nature of it. They obviously knew & understood what they needed to produce the type of mood they wanted for the song. No bubblegum song would even bother with such nuances..& "Not a Second Time" is one complex melodic gem. :-)
One of my absolute favorite Beatle songs, and John's middle eight KILLS! Love the skateboard pic of our boy. Never seen that before..or the one where he looks like he's lying on the ground. Thanks for the cool pix and video. :)
At last - this needs to come out on CD. Great track - mostly unconsidered and forgotten, but oh it reminds me of all those feelings then and a doomed romance in London the summer it came out. The best tracks always do that. Brilliant.
Amazing...its spring 1965 and they record this candy that sounds sooo 1957.... only 10 months later they are recorded singing backwards and that we listen to the color of our dreams
seems to me to be dedicated to his (john's) mother and her tragic death "red is the color that my baby wore"... "scarlet were the clothes she wore, everybody knows, i'm sure..." (the blood). so sad.
This shows the genius of the vocal work by the Fab Four. They are singing the harmony in 3rds (which is not easy by any stretch) and not straight up harmonies like most of their tunes. BTW Happy belated Bday Ringo!
i never heard this song before, and this so wire, anyway, like allways they don´t stop to give the best moments to enjoy the music, love them forever!!!!
Esta canción es una de las preferidas, la quiero tanto que casi todos los dias la escucho a veces pienso que seria de la vida sin los Beatles.

seems to me to be dedicated to his (john's) mother and her tragic death "red is the color that my baby wore"... "scarlet were the clothes she wore, everybody knows, i'm sure..." (the blood). so sad.

great harmonies :) one of the best beatles songs

This shows the genius of the vocal work by the Fab Four. They are singing the harmony in 3rds (which is not easy by any stretch) and not straight up harmonies like most of their tunes. BTW Happy belated Bday Ringo!
