The whole point of Stringer was to show what happened when someone tries to change the rules of the game, any game. Stringer was a reformer and reformers get shot at by everybody. This was Avon finally recognising where Stringer was coming from, actually questioning the game himself for the first time in his life. But even then, even knowing the truth, Slim Charles is there to remind him that he's trapped. Like all the rest of us, he's a prisoner to the lie.

Avon finally saw what is was like to be on the other side, empire getting shut down,his people getting killed or locked up loosing his best man and his family in the process he saw how fucked up this game is when your not on top.
